A coral reef is a ludicrous idea, its a scandinavian type environment, not tropical.

According to a lhttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cb/Coral_reef_locations.jpg :teehee: , coral reefs exist on some rare spots... more North.

Coral reef or not, I'd like to see some underwater vegetation, like: http://www.gefcoral.org/Portals/25/targeted_research/Jord%C3%A1n-Garza%20Photo%201.%20Counting%20corals_web5.jpg

I hope for more sea life but I doubt it will be a lot better in Skyrim. Maybe for tes6 if it's in Summerset Isles or Black Marsh.

While it is true that there are things in the ocean that want to bite and or eat people, most things out there will leave you alone. I have never been comfortable fighting things under water, probably more to the fact that your character is swimming and one can't swing a sword or weapon while doing that. Plus, of the 3 major classes of magic, Fire, Ice and Lightening, none of those are effective under water, except maybe Ice, and that would probably freeze you too.

So, while I would expect something down there to take a nibble once in a while, I would want my forays into the water to be more benign than dangerous.

Would be cool, but unnecessary. I would like underwater caves and sunken ships though.

If there are big, rare, deadly sea monsters in the deepest depths... there should be some kind of "warning" when the player is coming close to them. I mean, it's really dark in deep waters... and even if you had a light spell, it wouldn't lighten up much in front of you. The player would need some time to flee or prepare for a fight when he or she approaches a sea monster, I think

Perhaps a sea monster can make make a frightful sound at the exact time it notices the player... so that the player at least have a few seconds to either try to flee or bring up a weapon or spell. I think this would also make it even more exciting and scary :)

Or perhaps a sea monster can have this light on it (some sea creatures in deep depths in our world have some thing like this to lure other creatures to get closer...).
Player when seeing the light: "Oh there's some shiny light down there, deeper in the water... strange, perhaps some old magical item or ruin? Interesting, I should check it out."
When player gets closer: "HOLY MOTHER OF !#"&(¤%" -swims as fast as you can- :)

All we need is Jaws's music. Seriously.

I really don't give a toss as I'm an aquaphobe and will likely never see the ocean.

Coral reefs are VERY sparse in the northern parse of the world, so I don't think that coral reefs will fit in with the climate of Skyrim.

An inland Loch of great depth holding dark murky waters and an eerie sense of presence. As the skiff moves along you see a disturbance in the water as a great lake monster rises up. As fear fills your heart and the icy grip of panic seizes your muscles you find yourself face to face with the greatest monster of all time...NESSIE

True, Coral Reefs are typically tropical in nature. Most corals are found in waters that are in the 80 degree range, but can be found in waters that get down to 55 degrees. However rock formations and grottos can serve the same pupose of a Reef which is to offer protection to the fishes, so they congregrate there. Also, plants and other animals will attach to these rocks so that they look like Coral Reefs from a distance. To that end, if there is a boat or formation at the bottom of the water, there should be a larger population of the critters there.

It's fun to imagine a vast array of water life. But uh, lets be serious, who will REALLY take the time to explore the depths? There won't be a lot of lakes and such, this is Skyrim. North, snow, tundras. What few lakes and such will be there aren't going to have incredibly varied aquatic ecosystems. A few slaughterfish and maybe some neutral fish. On the ocean coasts have a passive coastal creature and a rocky, craggy ass coast infested with slaughterfish. Seriously.
This isn't the focus of the game and frankly I don't want to sacrifice RAM for a bunch of sea critters I'll only see if I'm an Argonian, and I [censored] hate Argonians.

I actually really want to be attacked by ice vampires whilst traipsing across a frozen lake..... there's your underwater monsters! But again, sunken environments to explore would be more exciting with the possibility of maybe running into some wicked leviathan or something like that.

I take time. Once I realized there were grottos in Morrowind. I always kept one eye to the coast, and I always looked near islands in the water :)

I'd say: Who will REALLY take the time to explore meaningless, empty depths with a few fish every here and there?
And: Who will REALLY take time to explore depths with secrets, underwater caves, sea monsters, treasures, beautiful environment, different kinds of fish, etc?

Oblivion's waters were a joke.

The focus of the game is what you make it, isn't it?

And if you think that RAM is so precious that it can't stand some extra objects, then I think you're either 1) have a 10 year old PC... or 2) have no idea what you're talking about.

I would need a way to see better underwater though.

Perhaps a mask or goggles with lenses made from slaughterfish eye lenses, or a spell.
In oblivion there was only one quest I can think of that required some diving, but I couldnt find that silly entrance into that tunnel from the cavern for an hour, not even after I looked up a guide.
I just couldnt see.
Night eye didnt help at all as the blue tint made everything blend into each other.

But, yes! Slaughterfish and mudcrabs and dreugh, non hostiles would also be nice.
Something native to the north. Do giant squid like the cold?

We need a fresh underwater life, with water I can see in, and lots of non-combatant fish and MANY dangers.
