Well if it helps there actually is a bit of logic into not carrying it on your back even when your not in combat, i mean say your walking through town and a guy rushes you with a sword at the ready.....if your shield were on your back that would be a few more seconds wasted getting it off and into position as opposed to having it at the ready where you deflect his attack with the shield or bash him with it, then draw your weapon and finish him as if he were johnny cage.
