Unexplainable sound issues in both Skyrim & Skyrim SE

Post » Sun Nov 27, 2016 6:48 am

I recently upgraded my laptop and now the Sound of both versions of Skyrim is no longer working properly. Some sounds and all voices are playing, but the music, footsteps, magic sounds and so on aren't working.

This happens with an unmodified version as well as with a heavily modded version of Skyrim. Strangely enough Fallout 4 is working perfectly, just like any other game I tried - thats why I am not sure if its even a hardware related issue. Could it be Direct X? I did install it twice, just to be sure.

Any ideas what could be causing it?

My computer:

Macbook Pro 2016 with Touchbar

Windows 10 Pro x64 (Insider build 14959 --> Could it be caused by using an insider build?)

2.9Ghz i7

AMD Radeon Pro 460 with most recent Crimson driver

16GB Ram

Mine be a problem with the sound driver or file corruption of the Skyrim installation files (e.g. Skyrim - Sounds.bsa). You could try deleting that file and then 'Verifying the Game Cache'.

Also make sure the volume sliders in-game aren't modified to reduce volume for certain sound effects. ;)

I already tried verifying the cache - no luck unfortunately...

As for the driver, its the most recent one that was included by Apple, which dates 22.11..

I would like to use another driver if I could, but there aren't exactly a lot of drivers availabe for a Cirrus Logic 8409 Ab57 chip...

Did you try deleting the sound file in question first?

Checked your speaker setup?

Windows Control Panel > Sound > Speakers, should be 2 channel stereo. Skyrim is 5.1 Surround by default and 5 channels need to be downmixed internally to 2.

I tried that with my speakers - no luck. With my headphones I cant even choose that. In any case, I am using the same settings like on my old Windows 7 machine. The only difference I noticed is, that I can only set the default audio format to 16/24bit 48000Hz, while on my old setup it went from 8000HZ to 92000Hz.

I reinstalled Windows 10 last night, but that too didnt fix the problem. Its really strange, as Fallout 4 works without any problem, while a technically similiar game has missing sounds and music -.-
