Unimplemented ideas from Oblivion?

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 4:44 am

I remember reading an interview with a developer who said when a game is being developed, they often have tons of ideas they want to implement but can't fit them all in and the ideas that didn't make it are put into the next game or existing ideas are expanded upon.

This got me thinking as to how there have been loads of threads in Oblivion General about things in Oblivion that seemed like the start of an idea that wasn't implemented or was implemented badly.

I'm hoping to see an expansion on these things...

Goblin Wars: We already know this was meant to be, so maybe in Skyrim there will be a proper implementation of this but maybe expanded on, perhaps bandit and guard wars between dungeons and guard outposts/cities.

Parchment and Quills: Seems like someone wanted to implement some sort of writing system, would be cool to be able to write in my own journal in-game and put notes on my map.

Destroyable Environment: Some planks and walls could be broken when walked on, I hope they expand on this to create areas that can be destroyed by the PC like in Dark Messiah.

Iron Forges: Some places had fully equiped Iron Forges, maybe they wanted to implement weapon customisation or something similar.

Can't think of any more things right now, but I remember seeing many lists of things that seemed like unfinished ideas that got left as just in-game junk and architecture and some resources in the CS that appeared to be unused by the game.

At the risk of becoming like this Twilight nonsense, Vampire Clans it would be cool to see again, and werewolves weren't even in Oblivion, it'd be neat to see them.

As for what you said about writing, I think it would be cool to be able to write notes for yourself and leave them in your house, mansion, apartment, castle, whatever so you could easily remember something later. Like say an alchemical recipe so you don't have to pop open the wiki. XD

EDIT: I like the above user comment, iron forges would be awesome, creating custom looking weapons and staffs that are truly unique from whatever materials you find. (Finally a use for silver ore!)

Ah yeah, how could I forget the radiant a.i.

I'm sure they will expand on that, it would be such a waste to throw away all the work they did in making the initial demo, hopefully they've had time to tweak it more and get more of their original ideas working.

Item/Weapon/Food creating system like in Fallout New Vegas ?
Be able to craft things out of materials ... also cook food on campfires.
Also be able to mod your weapons ... Add different handles, etc ... Which will improve your weapon's damage, speed, etc ...

Erm, I hope not.

I'd just sit back and hide since I hard enough time not hitting one friend much less a whole platoon+.

AS for any ideas that we don't know about...well...I guess only the devs would know

I hope they make a use for animal pelts and hides; maybe some kind of crafting.

I remember how every NPC had different stats making each of them react to things and do things differently. Some people would steal others if they needed money or something.

Writing your own journal entries would be awesome. If they ever do an hardcoe mode with a journal à la Morrowind, imagine if you can add information or such that isn't automatically written.

I really like the idea of goblin wars being applied to bandits- even if they didn't attack guards, the idea of different warlords vying for power in Skyrim's wilderness is very realistic. Id love to (hypothetically) see it happen.

Combat on horseback would be awesome, as well as the ability to make your mount go into a full sprint.

I remember Todd saying he wanted to have political quests regarding the elder Council and the Counts in Oblivion. However, it was cut for time constraints. Since a Nordic Civil war is almost certain, it seems that something to the same general effect will be implemented in Skyrim.

Huh? [censored], that would've been like one of the things I would've liked to see most in Oblivion... Oblivion really feels like a missed opportunity to me, mostly.

I want only two small things for the next iteration of Elder Scrolls.

1) Decent item placement
2) Named soul gems.

THINK BACK TO MORROWIND
I played the living supreme hell out of Morrowind. I even kept the ancient-of-days machine it was on just because I didn't want to re-install all the mods and what-not. I think the one thing that kept me coming back was "The Trophy Room Effect". The idea that after each night's adventure, I come back to my lair, and add the adventure loot to a growing collection. Bookshelves stacked with actual books. Daedra hearts laid out on parchment paper. Dwemer bowls full of rare jewels. Tables displaying the various families of weapons. Armor dummies arrayed in the various armors of the land. Sometimes I'd fire the game up just to look at it all and recall the glories of their acquisition. The highlight of the collection was always the Dwemer platters stacked with the captured souls of the greatest powers of the land. From the ash vampires, to the Dagoths... even Lord Vivec himself... all neatly arrayed as the crown jewels to a massive collection and catalog of soul gems.

"PROGRESS"... OR NOT
I was fairly frothing at the mouth to do this once more in Oblivion. Unfortunately we all know how that turned out. Soulgems came in two varieties: filled and unfilled. You'd never know if your grand soul gem held a rat or the raging soul of a the most fiendish beast in all of Tamriel. And even if they had implemented named soulgems (which they didn't), displaying them was an equal pain-in-the-but. Confounded physics made it IMPOSSIBLE to place anything neatly. Assuming you were lucky enough to place something "just so" you'd better stay well away from it, since the slightest bump would send stuff flying around like a pipe bomb in a pinball machine.

A loss still keenly felt. I too hope to see some more political scheming in Skyrim--that was one of the more interesting parts of Morrowind: you had the inter-House scheming, but then also the involvement of the Empire and other races as well.
