Uninspired?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:00 pm

I fear I might have worn Oblivion out to its fullest, and I was hoping I could get some advice so I don't... Wait for it... Get bored while playing Oblivion. Normally I would have slapped someone who would have said that, but I'm soon thinking this too, So I was hoping that someone could drop a line and inspire me for a new game.

TL;DR: I need a character idea and a role-playing mindset to back up

In advance, if this is what you would consider an "annoying" thread, I'm sorry, just kinda new here

pretty sure the only thing that classifies as annoying in this thread is if it advertises overpriced pie.

but, i just love ayelid ruins, there full of welkynd stones which help me alot, there always something interesting around the corner, varla stones arnt bad either.

may have tried this or not, but collect things. gems, silverware, apples. i collect welkynd stones and my house is glowing with power, literally, maybe i should build some sort of ayleid cannon.

if your on the pc, get mods. if you arnt on the pc, get it. if you can afford it and your computer can handle it then get it. the console is fun, and mods make limitless power, in fact... *types in ayleid cannon into google*

Bored of Oblivion...wow...erm. Yeah...the aforementioned house decorating is a good one, my char collects books and items related to Oblivion (the place) and is running a study on the Nirnroot. All of this and I'm playing on Xbox. Pseron Wyrd has given some great links as well.

I think someone here once wrestled (hand to hand) naked with a minotaur lord, and little skill in h2h.
Also someone recently kept stealing then dumping stuff in lakes, and rushed around to steal all mage guild items in one game night 8pm to 8am then dumped it all in Anvil harbour.
I like jumping from the highest points in game trying to land in water, or just from towers, but break my characters necks often.

So really just go nuts and see what happens when you try something.

Welcome to the forums. I have made ten characters over the course of the game since release. I too, have gotten bored, often, and here's what I do:

1. Play something you have never tried before. All my people tended to be sword guys and gals with magic. So I made a monk. I've done all the classes (all customized at some level), almost all the races... I have an honorable ronin right now, limited to Mysticism and Restoration magic only. Born under the Atronach, to make it a little harder. Won't do certain things. I also have a mage, who is an aggressive magic user. Pure archer is wondrous.

2. Role-play. Figure out a character, make a back story. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/939912-oblivion-character-database/ has some good ideas for types of characters. Perhaps this would be more helpful to start, then figure out the back-story after you have chosen how you would like to battle. There are a lot of versions of the same types of characters on those pages. Read thoroughly. One character might sound lame in the first description, but the exact same character done by someone else could be exactly what you are looking for.

3. Put the game down. Rotate in some other games. I'm rotating at the moment: Oblivion, Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2, Lego Harry Potter, and Call of Duty UO online. And even shooters when my buddies come over for beer. Or no games. Yeah, I said it out loud.

try to make unique builds Argonian witch doctors imperial vampire nobles um necromancers and pie thiefs, street magicians and crusaders or Tim the Enchanter from Monty Python etc. also two worlds 2 is coming out oct 5 and it looks 10 times better than 1 did, so that might be an option until New Vegas

...and if none of the above work, just stop playing for awhile. Do something else, get into another game, or go outside. And then one day you'll get an urge to play Oblivion again and it'll be fresh. :)

Nothing annoying about this thread.

You know what's annoying? The ones with a title like "question." That's it. Just "question." Like we wouldn't have known otherwise.

Or the ones that go like: "I was playing this quest and the thing that was supposed to happen didn't happen so I used this cheat that made something that's sort of like what was supposed to happen happen and now the quest is glitched and I saved right after I did it and my only other save is from 187 hours ago so how do I fix it?"

But I digress......

The way that I combat boredom is creating new characters and switching between multiple characters. The way I play characters-- I just start with a very basic outline-- something that intrigues me or that I think might be interesting-- Orc mage, female Bosmer with a battle axe, Imperial assassin who uses conjuration and illusion because he's too haughty to get his hands dirty, half-naked Argonian dagger specialist, half-naked Dunmer courtesan :hubbahubba: .... Then I just start them up and dump them into the world and follow them around and try to get to know them and learn what they think and believe and value and just sort of let them live their own lives, in their own ways. It's fun every time-- especially when a character really starts to take on a life of his/her own and starts developing a distinct personality.

And when I get to a point where I'm not sure what one's going to do next or I'm just not that interested any more, I set it aside and switch to another of my 20-odd existing ones, or go and create another one.

And if all else fails and I just can't work up the interest in any of them, I go play something else for a while. I just came back from a break of a few months. During that time, I started the game a few times, but just didn't get into it. Then, one night, on a whim, I started it up and created a new character I'd been sort of pondering, and that was that. svcked me right back in.

So-- for me, at least, the roleplaying mindset is "This is not me. This is an entirely separate being, with its own personality and its own interests, and part of what I'm going to have to do is figure out just who and what s/he is." It's sort of like watching a movie and directing it at the same time.

For ideas.... pretty much any good idea I have gets turned into a character, so all the ones that come immediately to mind are characters I already have. I'll try to come up with some new ones though:

How about an Altmer assassin? Make him (or her) one of those drippy scholar mages like Orintur or Henantier by day, then, at night, he dons his shrouded armor and goes out and assassinates people. With an axe. As brutally as possible.

How about a Khajiit swordsman? Like a true, traditional, noble swordsman-- a pure specialist with the finest of everything, well-mannered, cultured, civilized.... and a Khajiit.

Or maybe a female Breton barbarian? And a hand-to-hander to boot. Tiny little pale-skinned Breton in some combination of fur, leather and iron, beating the hell out of Orcs and Nords with her bare hands. Or maybe a whomping big claymore or warhammer-- that'd work too.

Could always do a Redguard thief. They're barrels of fun. Since they start out with good combat skills, you can ignore those entirely and focus on stealth skills and by the time those are up to a good level, they're deadly. And there's pretty much nothing better than Adrenaline Rush for running from the guards when you have to.

Or you could just roll up something random (I've got a thread going on that elsewhere) and either make it a wholly random custom class or pick one of the premade classes at random. Whatever you get is what you get and you just have to figure out how to make it work.

Or.... you know..... you could play something else for a while, but don't tell Beth I said so......

 I am going to try that later today.

@OP, when I get bored, I try to make a char with major weaknesses, or play one in a totally new way. Example never sells anything, never goes into towns or settlements, only takes potions at home, constant effect silence or weaknesses, manually training marksman from 5 on a pure mage, etc. For me the boredom flows from having a char who isn't challenging.

I assume you're not on PC....if you are, I'll say only 3 words: "mods" and "construction set".

The last one can be incredibly addictive, to the point that I haven't played Oblivion for more than a week, except entering every now and then to test my mod.

For the last two months the weather here has been a combination of heat and steam. Now that the worst is over, I'll be playing the 'Outside' game again.

When I first got Oblivion I played just about every day for 3 months. Then I got disillusioned with it...not really bored...but just sort of lost. I also really started to dislike the leveling system (bandits wearing glass armor, land dreughs, spriggans, and minotaurs at every turn, etc) and so I literally just stopped playing for maybe 2 or 3 months.

But after not playing for awhile, one day out of the blue I got back into it with a fresh new character and some new ideas about how to approach the game. And each time I restart a new character, I usually have additional new ideas that keep making Oblivion better and better, even though I'm doing Vanilla. :touched:
