Unique features or gameplay?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:09 pm

This has been on my mind for a very long time. I know that I'm not the only one who's sick of these "typical" gameplay suggestions like: Why are there no real snipers? Plz increase bullet damage. Headshot should be OHKO!
There are players like me who don't want that "mainstream" stuff, we want a Fastpaced, objective and teambased shooter that has typical SD features.
Same goes for asking other gamemodes. One of their first decisions was to make it an objective based game, try it before you start complaining about what Brink actually is INTENDED to be. /end rant.

That brings me to the main point of this topic. Are there actually other players like me, who like the game as it is and intend to buy it for the actual GAMEPLAY rather than some of its unique features like SMART.

I might edit this post later, because I'm not really satisfied with my wording.

[Censored] yes! I love everything I've heard about this game. The features, the gameplay, SMART, the art design...

Does anyone know that I preordered this game? Now I have pretty much zero income. For me, buying a new release game DOES NOT HAPPEN. I DO NOT DO IT. I can't afford that. And what's more, I never buy a game without consulting at least 3 different reviewers and scanning public opinion to make sure I'm spending my practically nonexistent money on something actually good. That's how confident I am.

Part of me is afraid that it won't have the frantic boost of W:ET though.

True, but I guess they have to be a little modern as well. The gaming audience is also a LOT bigger than 10-15 years ago.

Yes. I'm more focused on the objective class based gameplay and character customization than SMART

There is very little I have heard about this game that I don't like. Its like they sat down and addressed every complaint I have ever had about games and then some. I'm sure that not all of the problems they set out to fix will be completely gone, but definitely improved.

I like the idea of SMART, I'm a rusher in most games I play. But even without it, everything about the game sounds fun. If it wasn't there, I wouldn't even know that I missed it, and Brink would still be awesome.

People taking stances against particular parts of the gameplay, without even waiting to try it, nor keeping in mind the reason why SD did it is rather tiring though. Comes up fairly often around here.

What got me was the SMART system (Parkour before I learned it's name), then I saw the visuals (Amazing) and that it would be a Class-based Objective Game ([censored] me, I love classes and objective game modes in FPS), so yeah.. I want the ''teamplay'' which I hope will actually exist, I mean in the videos we get from Splash we see the whole team at the same perimeter running at the same time, giving covering fire.. Will this happen? I hope so

+1 :turtle:

It's good to suggest different ideas to game makers but I agree, coming in to a game's forums and trying to change something on your first post just doesn't make sense.

I couldn't care less about the gameplay in BRINK. In fact, I expect it to be fairly generic.

What keeps me interested in it is the whole setting and the art style. I just like the looks of it. But gameplay-wise, I could find myself playing tons of other games instead just as well.

I agree completely with the OP. SMART, toon customisation, graphical style, achievements, even XP and all the other new features are in effect gimmicks to me, fun for 30 minutes but not part of the core essense of SD games, the fast paced, skill orientated gameplay. I know I'm in the vast minority (especially regarding achievements and XP), but I play to have fun, and getting better at playing a game is part of that fun experience, and don't need to be bribed with a carrot to do it!

For me, the skill ceiling in SD games has always been pretty high, unlike a lot of more recent FPS, and is what kept me playing for years rather than the modern crowd where after a month or so you'd pretty much mastered everything, get bored and move on to the next one (other than moving into clan play, which doesn't interest me anymore). I have no problem with lowering the skill bar to enter, and think it's a very good thing to encourage more people to multi who otherwise wouldn't with a streamlined interface, SMART etc, but if it's at the expense of the skill ceiling then I can see Brink's longevity suffering greatly.

Me also, and that it will be more a half way house compromise between the realistic and action styles, not entirely pleasing either side. The thing is, a lot of the newer FPS players dont even know how much fun the W:ET style can be, so ask for more dmg etc out of ignorance that any other gameplay experience exists in FPS other than the slow paced realistic and for me, increasingly boring one.

The thing that got me into Brink was when I found out Splash Damage was making it. Another SD-style objective game is just what I have been waiting for.

I like games where you have a decent amount of health, so gunfights go down to skill instead of twitch shooting.

I also LOVE games with any sort of customization :).

I agree! what i like about this game is that, even if you hate working as a team, the only way to get a decent amount of xp is working together. Like protecting some, in search and destroy on CoD, the guy with the bomb usually ends up on his own while the rest of the team try and get kills.

Most of the time the game ends when everyones dead, if i wanted a team death match, id play one. So thats why im most excited for this game.

dysfunktion i totally agree with your post, i wasn't that big into the smart idea until it was implemented, what originally got me was the visuals and the actual game play/customization.

Depends.

I mean, I wont buy the game solely for SMART and other unique features, but then again they are a nice bonus.

Gameplay is a big part, but its not all of the decision. However the mainstream of most of today's culture seems to really affect just about everything else released. Take for example the mainstream of rap, which has turned most (not all) rap into a rant about how great the "O.G." singing it is. Same goes for games. Games like COD ( which I really don't like to bring up as comparison, but it is mainstream ) have affected almost all aspects of the mainstream of shooters. Other developers have tried to imitate what made the mainstream so great, instead of coming up with new ideas and features to make there games unique, which is what I hope from Brink.

So I agree, when it comes down to it, Gameplay is important, and vital, but if we don't want to get stuck in the same old..
"Track Russian (Insert lame name here) around the globe, have super weapon used/try to be used against the U.S, get trapped or betrayed, and overcome with willpower and kill the bad guy/former good guy."
Then the unique and innovative features developers try to implement into new games are needed to move the generation of games forward, and make the future of gaming a better and brighter place for us and the next generation of gamers.

I just like how it's geared for everyone to have a good time and to not be frustrating, but still be fast-paced and frantic and difficult.

SMART is what got me interested but it was the introduction of XP over KD that got me hooked. Too many strategic shooters start off strong but end up failing because no one bothers working together; Bad Company 2 for example. Aside from the gameplay factors I really dig the art style so this game appeals all around. However, my major concern after watching the PAX videos is that people are going to ignore SMART and just play it like CoD.

Lets see...

No one hit kills = Win
Grenades are croud control = Win
Smart system for easy navigation = Win
3 different body types for different styles of play = Win
A whole lot of character custumization = Win
Objectives that are based on classes = Win
A giant bundle of fully custumizable weapons = Win

Basically everything I've ever hoped for in a video game in one big package... This may just be the best game made to date :)

You can count me in. One of the biggest reasons I'm so in love with Brink (after the heaps of customization) is because I've been so disappointed with shooters nowadays. Brink looks to be a very refreshing change. Sadly, I've never played any of SD's previous titles, but I've seen and read enough to know that it's right up my alley.
