Unique weapons, yes or no?

Post » Fri May 21, 2010 9:27 pm

So, as the poll says what do you think?

I'm not sure I like the idea of named "unique guns", I see why they exist in game terms, they're a reward for exploration or killing "bosses". But on the other hand in real life, it just doesn't work that way.

Yes there are things that can be done to make a gun better than a 'stock' gun: a match-grade barrel, hair trigger. But those things are what gun mods represent in FO:NV.

It just seems like too much of a fantasy game thing to me. It's essentially "enchanted weapons" following the old fantasy trope.

Now I'm not against unique guns, but I think they could be done better in-universe. FO1 did it great. They had a unique gun, the .223 pistol, but it wasn't named like a fantasy weapon, it was named like a real gun.

So sure, have one, call it a prototype laser weapon or call it a longbarrel revolver but don't give it a cutsie "enchanted weapon" name.

A fair point, but then again FO:NV is way way more serious than the others in the series, they cut all the in-joke references and special strange encounters. There are no TARDISes (TARDIS? TARDISi?), holy grail knights, vorpal rabbits or aliens.

Given that I find it disjarring.

Well there is Indiana Jones and holy hand grenades and alien blasters.

How is "Chance's Knife" "enchanted"? Chance is a person that owned a knife- Chance's Knife.
Vance's 9mm SMG: It has attachments like Round Drum and you don't call it: 9mm SMG w/ Round Drum, because Vance owned it, its not enchanted nor does it have a "cutsie" name.
Althought some of the Unique weapons' names might be cheesy (Paladin Toaster, Dinner Bell), so you're not completely wrong.

I don't really think of 'uniques' as modified versions of existing weapons.
Sometimes they are quite different to their closest relative.
Other times I prefer to think of them as something that someone put a lot of time and 'love' into creating special, just for themselves.. (like La Longue Carabine?)

Then, I just rob it from them and it becomes MINE!
(Haven't killed one single npc for their weapons yet, I prefer taking them from them on the sly)

I love having Unique weapons. Whats funner than getting a nice little prize at the end of the day for doing some good or bad dead's.

Gameplay > Realism. NV is, after all, a game.

I find the whole "Wild Wasteland" thing stupid, basically, you can take a trait that converts Fallout: New Vegas, into, well, Fallout: New Vegas. Otherwise, it's just "New Vegas.

However, I think uniques are cool, I like them for the name alone. I really don't see how they are just "enchanted".

I still consider NV fantasy. It's not fairies and elves, but it's still fantasy. Or maybe closer to sci-fi, actually.
And if you have Wild Wastelands, there's your aliens.

But to the point...I like Unique weapons. I don't have to have them, but I don't mind that they're there. I don't have to use them, after all.

Chance's knife is just a bit sharper than normal because chance took very good care of it ;)

Likewise, most unique weapons are just modified with slightly better mods than you can find normally.

Random thought for future games : the creation of your own unique weapons. After reaching a nice high mark (1000 kills or repairing 5,000hp) on a particular weapon, it is renamed "couriers awesome rifle" and gets a slight bonus to damage, rate of fire, range or some other useful stat. Maybe

Natch, already-unique weapons would not be allowed here. No "couriers awesome This Machine" for you.

Maybe even base the bonus on the task completed.

1000 kills = 5% dmg bonus
5,000 hp worth of repairs = degrades 10% slower
500 kills through iron sights = improved spread
Etcetera.

Edit: one more ... Faction specific bonuses!
Kill 500 legion/NCR/etc and get a bonus with that weapon avaunt those guys.

It's over 200 years in the future, maybe that's realistic to them

The basic laws of physics don't work in Fallout like they do in real life. Games have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with realism. A realistic post-apocalyptic simulator would be a miserable and depressing 'game' that consisted of a weak and feeble player slowly dying in a ditch of radiation poisoning before his carcass was consumed by maggots. Not FEV-enhanced giant maggots either, just regular ones.

So that's a 'yes' vote from me.

So using that definition, how would you describe something like a Flight or military simulator? because they can be classed as "video games"

Simulators are a special exception though, and indeed many of their fans would turn their nose up at the 'game' label anyway.

RPG combat has always been the least realistic combat there is. People are super human. Even in these 2 relatively easy games people can take multiple head shots.

To me rpgs are suppose to be this way. The only problem I see is that 99% of NPC fighters are much less powerful than you when your character is a Uber God. Special weapons or not, 99% of NPCs have no chance.

Some NPCs need to be Uber Gods, have better AI, and better weapons to counter the problem of these games being to easy overall.............IMO

There is realism in unique weapons. Blades are the best example, stamp ones and forge ones are very different.

I don't want to spoil anyone's fun, but your skills affect the amount of damage you do. Yes, shooting you in the head will hurt more if I'm really good at it.

It's all about having fun. Games are made "realistic" enough to become believable. They're no different than any other work of fiction.
