Unlimited or Restricted Skills (professions).

Post » Fri Jan 17, 2014 12:27 pm

I've seen a lot of back and fourth about crafting skills (professions); some people want crafting skills to be restricted, while others want the ability to participate in every crafting skill.

I understand in many MMOs, the player is restricted to primarily two crafting style skills. I will be using World of Warcraft as an example for simplicity sake (even though I HATE comparing The Elder Scrolls Online to World of Warcraft).

In World of Warcraft, you are limited to two (last time I checked) crafting professions, usually professions that cater to each other (I.E. mining and armor smith for example). Star Wars: The Old Republic follows this same formula. The Elder Scrolls Online, however, will follow the more traditional role of The Elder Scrolls series, letting you (attempt to) master all the crafting skills available in the game. Some people like this, while others dislike it.

So this is where the poll comes in. Which would you rather prefer: unlimited skills or a restriction in skills?

I am also throwing in some other polls that I find interesting that really have nothing to do with this topic.

Bringing up those other games is a great way to start an off-topic flame war :D *munches popcorn*

With a limited amount of professions I see it as a bigger opportunity for people to interact and trade with eachother. Otherwise it would eventually be only trading resources, once their crafting professions had been maxed out.

Unlimited restrictions for crafting is great, with the current system they have it could work brilliantly.

I don't think Swtor or GW2 failed either.

I'm about 7/10 on excitement for TESO at the moment.

Let's not talk about the payment models either, as they are not for discussion right now.

One of the things I find offputting about what I've heard from TESO so far is this:

- Your character is ultimately worthless.

As long as all characters possess the ability to "re-spec" at will all individual characters are nothing. If you weren't there to be the "Tank" someone else could simply "re-spec" their Healer to be the the Tank.

- No risk and reward.

You won't have to worry about PvP unless you go out looking for it and more than likely "phase" into a PvP area.

Now it would svck if people could pick on you at will but there ought to be some element of risk and reward to make your gameplay experience more meaningful.

As it stands now it sounds like the player is simply rewarded for showing up and putting the time in.

This could potentially shape up to be the "Call Of Duty" of Elder Scrolls Games.

Respec is pretty much needed in an MMO these days, people will moan and complain that it's not there until it is added.

There is a lot of reward and risk, can't say more than that.

There's also no phasing in the PvP area, you are assigned a campaign and you stick to that campaign, nothing within that is phased.

And characters being worthless? It completely depends on how people build their characters, and the set up of any group.

That depends on the cost of the respec. From what we've heard it's not something you can do for free at any time (as you can in some games). There's both a money cost and a time cost, afaik.

And assuming that by "respec" you mean change the skill point allocation... sure, you can equip a different weapon and swap out your active skills at any time to any you have invested in, but if you haven't USED those skills they will be low level and relatively ineffective.

And how is this even remotely relevant to any of this thread's 12 or so different topics, lol?
