A lot of the automatic rooting apps never worked for me. I tried Universal Androot last year and it didnt work at all. I find the command line is much easier and takes about 5-10 minutes.

As to my Droid, I moved up from 2.2 this morning to 2.3.2 stock, and then I just flashed to Project Elite 2.3.2 custom ROM now. It runs amazingly but it really destroys my battery. It is running at about 1100Mhz on the powersave setting but it dies so quickly. I may have to underclock.

Also on Project Elite, in the msg settings there are options for "spoofing" the phone as another. Have you tried seeing if your CPU will run at the same clock speed with a lower voltage kernel? I have my Droid running 2.3 at 1.1GHz on Performance mode, but my battery life is just as good as stock at 550MHz since it's a low voltage kernel. Also, underclocking when the screen is off helps a lot.

I'd really like to root my LG Ally but am not sure how to do it. Any place to look for a really good walk-through on what to do and how to do it? I really only want to get rid of apps that are on the system that I have no use for.

Yeah I changed it to Petes New 1050Mhz low voltage kernel. I will see how long that lasts me. I usually kept it on Ondemand before. I mean I keep a charging cable with me at all times since I use it as a wifi hotspot but a longer battery life is always good.

So I haven't rooted my phone yet even though I keep wanting to, and my girlfriend just got a Samsung facinate which to me seems like a Google iPhone with the way it functions. Anyone know of an easy way to root my Droid 2 and new themes for it? I may end up just rooting to remove stock apps and ads from the apps I already use but if I can get different themese at least that would be great.

Hey guys, I want to get a new phone preferably an Android phone. I was thinking of buying the Droid X (I was going to buy the Thunderbolt but I wouldn't have used all the power it has so it would've been a waste of money) from Verizon. Anyone pick up the Atrix?

I've seen the HTC Inspire 4G in action and it is significantly like the Aria but with much better specs and more able to run and utilize the latest Android versions (Aria was extremely late in getting Froyo for example). I think of it like an upgraded Aria, with a much better battery too, since one of the largest complaints with the Aria (along with most other smart phones) is battery.

Really, though, by fall this year both phones will be obsolete for probably yet another drool-worthy HTC phone and updated Android OS. Things are moving pretty swiftly atm so kinda just watching to see how things pan out.

I'm getting (probably) and HTC Thunderbolt for my birthday this Friday!! Can't wait.

Anything I should know about Android before I jump in?

I'm debating trading my white iPhone 4 for one but it's only on Bell network and I don't know if it can be unlocked to be on Rogers. The Atrix is the best phone available in Canada right now.

Nope sorry, there is a mandatory $30 data plan with all smart phones, no matter how many minutes or how much you pay. I've got Verizon, I didn't want to make the switch but Sprint just cannot bring any good phones to their network, its pitiful. $100 for everything on sprint though, what an amazing plan...

Megabump. I got a Samsung Galaxy Apollo the other day, which runs Android, and I don't know if I've just been unlucky or what but it's crap. The battery lasts for like 7 hours, it takes about 5 times longer to boot up apps than on my ipod, the App Store and general layout is either stolen from the iPod or unintuitive and ugly - I've seen some HTC phones that look nice, and I know my phone is definitely at the cheaper end of the market, but I honestly don't see why people think Android is so much better than iOS.

Sounds to me like something's wrong with your phone, the battery life should not be that short. Maybe if you are constantly streaming something I could see it being real short, but it should last significantly longer than that otherwise. I'd take it in and get a replacement. You can usually do that for free if it's been 30 days since the purchase.

Why people think Android is better than iOS can be elegantly summed up in a single word: Freedom. On the android I'm free to install apps, even from out of the market, out of the box. I'm free to release my own apps at any time. I'm free to do whatever I want, which isn't true even in the slightest on the iPhone. Yeah, you can jailbreak an iPhone, but Apple will fight you every step of the way. Android, on the otherhand, being open source, means that releases come to rooted phones running custom roms quite easily. I can make an android phone suit my needs: If I want raw power, I can crank it into overdrive and just murder the battery in a matter of hours. If I need something that lasts a long time, I can underclock it and take a more minimalistic, finely-tuned rom.

With Android I'm free to do what I want and can really make it *my* OS. iOS on the other hand is locked-down and does the one-size-fits-all approach. There's some more wriggle room if you jailbreak it, but that's an uphill battle against Apple and you will miss out on important updates as well as not nearly as much freedom as can be generated by rooting a phone running Android.

Does anyone know how many touch points the HTC Desire has?
I have a game app that wants me to touch 3 places at once, but I can't seem to do it. It recognizes 2 different points, but not 3.
Is there maybe a software update for this?

Not that I'm aware of, Desire came out at the same time with my phone (Legend), both have become much neglected by HTC (which seems to be a common practice for any companies).
