So I recently got a droid 2 and have been going crazy with it. Got a few apps such as Opera and a couple of games (only free apps for me) and have been trying to find a good notepad one. I got one named just Notepad by BanderLabs and it seems basic enough and does not transmit any data, but I also got aNotepad by Chronos and it seems good as well but I don't know which I like better.

What are some of your favorite droid apps? I am only going to be using free ones and may look into how to develop them as well.

Pandora, Shazam, ASTRO, Retro Radio, eBuddy... there are probably a few I'm forgetting. And I've limited the list to those that don't require root.

I have noticed so many free apps want an active internet connection for ads which is annoying. Why does Pandora Radio want access to phone calls (if Iread it right)? I avoid any that want access to too much information.

I find it more annoying when I hear the low battery tone at ear busting volume when I have my headphones plugged regardless of the low volume I set it at.

I was just using my phone while it was connected via USB in Charge Only mode but it didn't seem to want to charge at all, nor did it when it was left on and plugged into a wall. I really hope I did not get a defective phone. Seems to be charging now that it is off, the other night when I charged it the phone was charging fine while on which is weird.

It needs access to the phone in order to determine when a phone call is coming through and thus will mute / stop the audio stream.

I really hate when people post links to their own threads, but this is to help you: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1120977-the-bgsf-unofficial-comprehensive-smartphone-application-list/page__p__16485778&#entry16485778

Get Alchemy, it's just that awesome. :D

I'm REALLY wanting to get the AT&T version of the Galaxy S next year. Assuming that the Windows Phone 7 doesn't live up to my expectations. :P

Failing that I'm interested in the Galaxy S Pad. No release date yet though as far as I'm aware. :(

The only must have ap that I would recommend would be the launcher pro app. It makes your home screen navigation much smother and user freindly and allows more windows (not sure if that's what you call it) but it made my milestone a thousand times better.
Its the one app I probably wont be able to live without, and of course the chuck norris one. :P

Writing this from my Droid 2 since my laptop has no internet for some reason.

I'm waiting on my car charger, snap on case, and screen protector. I did find an uninstaller app last night but it just shortcuts the process to remove user installed ones, though I wish I could get rid of some of the stock apps. If anyone knows how or if its possible let me know.

So far liking the phone and the voice typing (not using it for this) had roughly 90% accuracy on the short few tests I did last night.

You will need to root your phone to remove the stock apps as far as I know. I had to do that on my Motorola Cliq.

Never thought of it needing calls to mute the audio.

Anyone know what languages the apps are written in? I know its XML for the UI though.

Java (UI can be Java as well, but XML is definitely recommended practice) in general. For native stuff, there's also C. AFAIK, those are the only officially supported languages, but http://stackoverflow.com/questions/101754/is-there-any-way-to-run-python-on-android, for instance.

The way things are looking, it's gonna be Gava* soon, not Java <_<

(for those who don't know, Oracle is being really anol about Google's Java implementation on Android, claiming it violates a lot of their patents)

*My portmanteau of Google and Java, once Google gets too fed up with Oracle's bullying and decides to rebrand their Java implementation in a sticking-your-tongue-out manner

Last night I did a complete re-install of Android on my Droid. Up to FRG22D with Root. Tethering is extremely useful, and its going to be extremely upsetting when Verizon goes to its limited service plan. Currently using a http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq102/Starforce9/FalloutDroidsetting.png(looks pretty cool, especially for being free, I may get a full pipboy theme soon)

Other than the apps that need the root access is it worth it to root the phone? I do want to get rid of a bunch of stock apps that I would like to remove.

I just got eBuddy for IMing on the phone but it wanted call access. Is there a way to tell exactly what a particular app wants certain access for?

IMO its very useful, and there are programs out there that will "auto-root" for you. (I prefer it manually, it usually works out better for me)

rooting gives you a lot of control over your phone. Some of those apps that need root access allow you to do things like underclock your phone and improve battery life. Then with some carriers (*cough* AT&T *cough*) if you don't root your phone, you can't even do the things other android phones can do stock (AT&T locked up Android so tight it makes me sick)

I will have to look into it then to at least get rid of alot of the stock apps and then unroot it again, so data isn't accidentally transmitted by certain apps. I am on Verizon so the AT&T restrictions don't bother me. I think the Droid 2 isn't locked up too tight, but then again I have only had it for a couple of days.

I'm looking at the permissions for eBuddy on my Droid, and I don't see "call access" listed anywhere. I see: Your location (coarse), Network communication (full access), System tools (prevent phone from sleeping) and Hardware controls (control phone vibration).

So I'm thinking about rooting my Evo. Is this a completely legitimate thing to do? Just seems like it surely must be going against some kind of ToS or some such.

I wasn't saying eBuddy needed call access but gave it as an example of an app I downloaded.I don't have any off the top of my head I know of that had weird permissions.

It will certainly void your handset's warranty, but I don't think (I could very well be wrong) that it will violate any Terms of Service.

Ah, well. Generally apps need to have call access (I think, I may be thinking of another part of permissions) to know when to mute audio and such, as in the case of Pandora.

In the US it's always legal to do:
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/07/26/iphone-jailbreak-and-android-root-declared-legal-in-us-feds-exempt-smartphone-hacks-from-dmca/
As far as handset warranty, rooting voids it, but you can always restore to stock unrooted if something isn't working right and you need to take it in for warranty service. If it completely breaks, they'll likely just replace it, and wont be able to see if it was rooted or not.

If you do root, definitely think about custom ROMs.

Found an amusing game called Milky Milky on Market. Basically cows move into a barn to be milked an dyou need to line up pipes to fill trucks before your milk reserves overfill. Pretty fun, found one for computers and servers too.
