Unofficial Anime Thread VI

I watch the filler. Sometimes it's pretty awful but I just can't bring myself to skip episodes in a series. It's blasphemous. Especially since I don't read the manga.

I don't like the idea of skipping episodes either, which may be another reason why most of the series I'd really recommend are not really long runners, you don't have as much time to spare on filler if you need to conclude the story in a set amount of episodes.

The thing with Naruto fillers is that what goes on in a filler will NEVER be mentioned again after that filler arc is over. Never ever ever. Not even in another filler arc. If you skip over a filler arc, you will never see a flashback or hear some dialogue referencing that filler. Combine that with the fact that Naruto fillers are nearly unwatchable because of how awful the writing is, and that's reason enough for me to skip them.

We need happier anime's where there aren't so many screwed up people

But keep the lisbians in them

What happened to the anime thrillers? Or the anime movies at all?

I'm looking at my collection and see anime thrillers from the 80s like Golgo 13 and Wicked City, but aren't there any newer anime thrillers than that? Heck, barely any anime movies are released now at all besides the Ghibli stuff, the last non-Ghibli movie I bought is probably Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence and that was almost 5 years ago.

So where did the anime thrillers go? Do they still exist, if so, what are they?

The main stuff I see being released today are just series that are about some young awkward boy who suddenly becomes surrounded by a lot of girls. Pure fanservice stuff that seem to lack any kind of plot and just an annoying amount of episodes that are useless fillers. Not really the kind of stuff I'm eager to watch.

Now, I'm not totally against mini-series, there are good ones that I like, like Cobra, Gunbuster, Record of Lodoss War, The Vision of Escaflowne, Trigun and the Ghost in the Shell series, but they had an overall good plot with a proper ending which was moved forward without fillers or without an excessive amount of "fanservice", the last one I can think of being Samurai Shamploo or Black Lagoon and those are several years old now too.

So what's a good new series? You know, that isn't about some shy highschool boy that lack any kind of social skills :P

Oh, and another series I do like is Excel Saga for it's plain wackiness, but that's not really what I'm looking for now.

I watched Monster last year. It's about 70 episodes long and has a great atmosphere, mystery and harsh truths about human nature. The series is about a surgeon named Tenma who goes against his boss' will and perfoms surgery on a boy instead of some politician. Some stuff happens and Tenma gets framed for murder the boy he rescued did. Some years pass and the boy shows up and disappreas and Tenma see that he is evil and decides to find and kill him.

I think I could recommend it and it's not to old(2004-2005). The only bad thing I could say is that the ending was a bit weak.

Paprika is a great movie, as are the rest of Satoshi's works. I think these are the best match for what you are looking for.

Baccano! is a great series that isn't about shy highschool boys :P Also fond of the Gunslinger Girl series and Ergo Proxy is good too

For Romance there is the Girl who Leapt through Time and Shinkai's movies. I'll leave out most other romances since that doesn't seem to be what you are after

All series/movies are post-2000 and lack anything that I would consider fanservice (with the exceptions in both categories for some of Satoshi's works).

Ah, cool, Paprika seems interesting and it was released here too so no need to import it, guess I give it a chance :) Have another Satoshi movie on DVD, Tokyo Godfathers, which is excellent.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is also an excellent movie, somehow it slipped my mind when I wrote the last post, but I have that on DVD too :)

I can recommend this one - I saw it yesterday and it was absolutely fantastic.

EDIT: Oh, you've already got it. :P

A random throw out there - Death Note? I enjoyed it, and it's about 36 Episodes, if I remember correctly. It's - I'm not sure what to describe it as, but I'd go with mystery. Watch it if you like http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/XanatosGambit

They did have ep1-15 at sfbok.se. :P It's expensive though and I saw the whole series on Tradera for the same price sometime ago.

Paprika is great movie.

Metropolis is quite enjoyable to. It's very pretty and has lots of detailed scenes.

EVANGELINE~~! :blush2:

I think when I move I'm probably going to throw my figurines away. Maybe when I get my own place (~50 years into the future) I'll buy some quality ones.

Hey guys, I'm trying to find the name of an anime, but I can't remember what it's called. Can anyone help me out here? I'll just write a brief description, and put it in spoiler tags (if you've seen a lot of animes, you've probably already seen the one I'm trying to think of.) Highlight the spoilers at your own risk.

Spoiler
It's an anime about a protagonist who wears a red coat, and is only partially human. He is on a quest to defeat his arch-enemy, who also happens to be his brother. Along the way, he befriends a priest and two girls who help him on his quest. The main character, while he is only partially human, still shows sympathy for other humans, while his evil brother does not. He and his brother each have a special weapon that was made for them.

Can anyone help me out here? Thanks.

That Nagato Yuki figurine looks awesome!

I currently have figures from Bleach: Hitsugaya, Rukia, Grimmjow, and Ichigo.

EVANGELINE~~! :blush2:

I bought the limited edition of the second disc of the first season just to get her, after having already bought the box set of the series. Though she has a habit of not liking to stand up.

Don't throw them away!!! at the least package them up until you move out.

Edit: Updated OP, removing Fall season simulcasts, added Spring season simulcasts. There are two more to come (unknown one from Crunchy and The Tatami Galaxy from FUNimation). One other title on Crunchy too in simulcast

Well, this week looks like a good week. My Haruhi Suzumiya figurines came a few days ago (Only Haruhi and Mikuru, but I'll get the others eventually.) My shipment of Haruhi stuff came today too, according to my mum. (Big EMS package from Japan) I've ordered some posters 'n books, etc.

And now I'm looking at buying some CDs from Japan. Probably both Haruhi and K-ON! CDs. I was wondering though, is it better to buy in small batches or a singular batch from cdjapan? The costs for shipping seems to go quite a lot for each CD I add.

Also, DEFRON, I want those Yuki figurines, especially the witch one. :P

What did America do to Naruto? The anime is just as childish in Japan, all America did was remove some of the rare instances of foul language.
