Unofficial Anime Thread VI

Post » Thu Oct 15, 2009 2:34 am

Welcome to the return of the anime thread. After a long break, we have been granted another chance to discuss anime in a centralized manner. Let's not ruin it and show them that their trust is well placed. Now for the rules. There are many new ones, so make sure you read them carefully:

1. This is for the discussion of all things anime and manga. Naturally this allows for discussion of related topics, but discussion is primarily about Japanese animation and manga. If you are not a fan of it, then this is not the place for you.

2. Be courteous of others and use spoiler tags when appropriate. This applies to all content both old and new.

3. Only anime/manga legally available in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand are allowed to be discussed.

4. Discussion of episodes/chapters that have yet to be released in these regions is strictly forbidden

5. Discussion of imported Asian DVDs is forbidden due to it being impossible to differentiate between someone importing a DVD and illegally downloading.

6. Discussing or requesting where you can download anime/manga is completely forbidden. This is illegal and clearly against the forum rules. There are some stores that legitimately sell anime online, such as iTunes and Funimation's Download-to-Own, and you may mention these services in the thread.

7. Discussing/Linking to episodes uploaded to Youtube (and other user-uploaded video sites) by persons other than official license holders is completely forbidden. This too is against forum rules.

8. Content unsuitable for minors is forbidden. This being a PG-13 forum, such content is not allowed. This applies to images and other linked content: no nudity and no extreme violence/gore. Discussion of these more "mature" series is ok, just don't link to any images of the more mature content. And obviously no pormography, discussion or linked content.

9. All forum rules are in effect (ie: no trolling, flamebaiting, etc)

10. Please report any offenses when you see them.

11. Anything anyone is uncertain about should be asked via PM prior to posting.

Keeping the Gunslinger girl theme, the subtitle quote is from the ending to the last episode of Gunslinger Girl -Il Teatrino-

Can someone recommend me a anime really similar to 5cm per second. thanks.

Other anime from Makoto Shinkai:
Voices of a Distant Star
The Place Promised in Our Early Days

Definitely the best suggestions to give. I will add Honey and Clover to that.

Edit: Thanks unnamed moderator for fixing my mistake :)

Can anyone recommend a good, preferably dubbed, anime? I'm into more "mature" animes like Ghost in the Shell and personally can't stand animes like Naruto that have countless filler and are just plain silly and wacky at times.

So far I've seen:
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and all three movies
Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni
Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate
Afro Samurai
Devil May Cry

May as well give the obligatory Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Trigun, Black Lagoon, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan response.

Black Lagoon sounds right up your ally, also Monster. Given your list of Higurashi, you aren't after just pure action so Gunslinger Girl may be a good view (some action, but much moreso about what it means to be alive).

Can't speak for the quality of their dubs as I won't watch dubbed anime (one thing I do know for a fact is that Franca is called Flanca in the English dub of Gunslinger Girl. How they screwed up an Italian's name is beyond me).

Watch the first season of Gunslinger Girl though....not the 2nd though. They really toned down on the animations it's sad :(
Did anyone pick up the license for Gunslinger Girl manga yet? It feels horrible having an incomplete set thanks to dead company ADV manga :(

Yes, the animation wasn't in par with the first season (though I did end up liking it after it grew on me), but I found the story to be better in the second season. Granted the story is excellent in both.

ADV is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do. :P

I might try to re watch the 2nd season. The girls eyes are so big!
And almost dead are they still going through bankruptcy or something? I want license out of their hands into an better company to produce it.
I dislike ADV very much........

Different studio = different art style. The voice actors are different too. I like that arc a lot, though, since Triela is my second favorite character (Claes is definitely the best)

Mostly dead as in they split into a few companies that inherited 95% of their licenses. No word on Gunslinger Girl's manga though (I wish Yen Press would announce randomly that they snagged it from ADV). I too dislike ADV a good amount. Did when they were fully alive as well.

The Princess Bride quotes aren't appreciated here I guess :( Where is the wuv? The twue wuv that will fowwow you foweva

Yea Triela is my favorite too , her and her teddy bears :)
There must be some sort of way to find out who has the license . I checked the wiki and 11 issues of the manga there is . America has the fewest. Also when trying to get the 7th copy it was in german. Oh well , wait can I say I got a german copy is that ok for this thread?

Berserk has a really good 10 episodes or so... The ending will piss you off though. A lot. Seriously, that was just ridiculous.

Since you have seen Higurashi, I would suggest Elfen Lied.

There are three movies: The first one, Innocence, and Solid State Society.

I've always wonder what Ghost in the Shell 2.0 is like. I've read it's suppost to be a revamped, re-release on the original GITS movie. Soooo---if anyone's has seen it, what's it like?

Haven't seen it, but specs of the http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/ECxR1uD400hT0MEmyc/browse/item/85120/4/0/0:

A film that has spawned a thousand imitations, Mamoru Oshii's legendary anime film Ghost In The Shell returns in a stunning new edition remastered by Oshii himself. For this definitive Version 2.0 release, all the original animations are re-produced with latest digital film and animation technologies, including 3D-CGI.

Set in a re-imagined Hong Kong at a time when cyberspace is expanding into human reality, the story follows top cyberwarrior Major Motoko Kusanagi as she hovers on the border of total immersion in the digital world.

The definitive 2.0 also features new voice recordings from the original cast, a brand new score from Kenji Kawai, and 6.1 channel sound created with the help of Skywalker Sound.

Special Features: The Making of Ghost In The Shell 2.0, Commentary by Director Mamoru Oshii and Animation Director Toshihiko Nishikubo with Subtitles, Face-to-Face Exclusive Interview with Director.

Spoken Languages: English, Japanese, English subtitles.

If I had a blu-ray player, I would buy it.

I heard the CGI makes some scenes look terrible compared to the original version.

I'm not much of an anime fan,but I recently watched Spice and Wolf after eying it for a few months and enjoyed it quite a bit..ok,maybe quite a bit is isn't enough..I started watching it at 8 pm and didn't get out of my chair for the ~10 hours it took to watch it fully.

Was totally worth falling asleep at my desk the next day.

Alright since DEFRON so highly recommended Spice and Wolf that is what I am watching

It was boring at first but then Holo showed up and things got interesting.

I also love the opening song (and am a little disturbed by the ending song)

It seems like it will be a really good series

Elfen Lied and Fullmetal Alchemist. The latter gets wacky sometimes but all in all it's a really good anime and it's dubs are great. Might want to check out Samurai X too. It's the prequel to Kenshin but it shows him during the time when he was Battousai the Manslayer.

Started watching Spice & Wolf. The mercantile setting appeals to me. ^_^ Good to see a show with none of that nonsensical 'all confrontations equals battles with superpowers'.
