Unofficial Anime Thread IX

They need more live action movies of anime series. I loved Dragonball: Evolution and The Last Airbender, so I figured there would be at least a couple coming out this year. Haven't found any; what a shame. :(

The bastardised (is that a word?) live-action movie version of Priest is coming out, seriously, after Blood the Last Vampire and Priest, I give up all hope on good anime/manga/manhwa English adaptation.

Even if I didn't think that dubs were better left avoided, I'd still say you never should have had much faith in Bandai; for every Cowboy Bebop quality dub they have, there are five of Gundam WIng's caliber.

They should go ahead and dub the songs aswell, since it's clearly not going to be the best dub ever they should aim for the worst.

Well Cowboy Bebop is suppose to be made into a live action movie with Keanu Reaves as Spike. It is ether going to be crap or amazing.

I've heard good of Ghost in the Shell, just not sure when I should watch it. I just started Code Geass R2 earlier. Might watch it after, who knows. :P

Yes it is, I though Just5Guys did a better dub for their abridged series of it... and it's 5 guys....

Okay, I've finally decided to watch subbed anime. I've always just been unsure if I'd appreciate it/pay attention as well with it not in a language I understood. It's not like that though, obviously. However, depending on the anime, I might watch it dubbed. Especially if it has a lot of action. :P

Welcome to the return of the anime thread. After a long break, we have been granted another chance to discuss anime in a centralized manner. Let's not ruin it and show them that their trust is well placed. Now for the rules. There are many new ones, so make sure you read them carefully:
(...)

I just have to thank everyone who participates in this thread.
I wasn't aware of it until now, and now I can watch so many different animes via internet.
I was always searching for something like that.
Thank you!!!

I have a question for you guys. I have tried watching different Anime but I honestly cannot get into 99% of it. I can't really immerse myself in it because I just cannot relate to it (I am a westerner by birth). However, when I saw Cowboy Bebop I fell in love with it and watched the whole series. Since then I tried watching about 3 different series thinking I might find something similar but to no avail. I usually watch one or two episodes and then stop (because its really not my thing).

Seeing as this is the case, are there any animes that you guys could recommend? I don't know where to look anymore and I'm tired of trying since it seems it will bear little fruit.

*EDIT*

I really don't like anime who's protagonist is still in school. That is a huge downer for me. There were a few animes that I watched where the main character had some kind of power but he still attended school (so he must be 16 - 18) and its really not my cup of tea.

Hm, immersive .. Although somewhat overrated, Death Note was the first that came to mind when you mentioned you getting bored after two eps. The protagonist is finishes highschool within the first quarter of the series, but it rarely has scenes in school. You will probably know if you're into it after episode one. Maybe two. It's pretty popular in the US, so you might have heard of it. Either way, I would give it a watch if I were you.

Another one you might want to try is Monster. It's different from a lot of other Anime, and seems a bit more like watching a T.V. series, so it may seem more western for you.

Even though I had an important part spoiled for me, I've cried a lot during After Story compared to how much I tear up . Which isn't a lot. :3 I just finished episode 16, so I still have eight more to go, but still. Clannad is such a beautiful series, I'd recommend it for anyone. Though when you get to After Story, get a box of tissues if you're human.

"Borrowed" ( :whistling: ) my sisters dvd's for Witch Hunter Robin. I don't really like the animation (it's kinda meh but hey it is an older series) but I love the music and the characters.

I'm only on the third episode so I couldn't say if the story is anything great but I do like where the series may be headed if it's headed in the direction I'm thinking it is.

At the time I wrote that, I was only on episode 16. I only teared up a little to that point. The next eight episodes was pretty much constant crying. I was surprised, because nothing has ever made me cry like that. Clannad's definitely one of my favorites now.

I'm not really a huge anime fan either, but I do enjoy quite a few. Cowboy Bebop among them. Some I'm interested in that I would recommend include:

Full Metal Alchemist. I personally like this show because I just find alchemy in of itself interesting. And their take on it is neat. Plus the reasoning behind the name "Full Metal" in the series is pretty awesome. Its worth a shot if you haven't checked it out already.

and as mentioned a few posts above Deathnote is also pretty good. I have only seen a few episodes here and there and it seems you need to watch it from start to finish to understand it.

So there you go, that's my two from someone who like you, isn't really a fan of anime per say. Just certain shows.

I enjoyed that series. The story is pretty ordinary, and from what I remember the ending is inconclusive, but the atmosphere is awesome. The gentle pace, the slow character development and the overall feeling of melancholy that permeates the whole series makes it significantly more than just a sum of its parts.

You might try watching Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, if you haven't already. Much better than the first anime series.

Warning: The following content is spoilers from Maid-sama volume 7. It also may cause mental pain for the uninitiated. If you have not yet read this volume and/or plan on picking it up and/or are unfamiliar with the effects shoujo can have on a reader, DO NOT OPEN THE SPOILER TAG! I cannot be held responsible to any psychological damage it may cause.

Spoiler

Misaki finally was honest about her feelings!!!! Finally she and Takumi kiss!!! *squee* It's been a long time coming, but totally worth it. I can't believe how the mangaka managed to fit all those cliches in there and make it actually WORK. Still, it leaves me wondering where it'll go from here out now that Misaki admitted her feelings and they've kissed, I honestly wasn't quite expecting it to happen this soon, i was expecting it to still be quite a ways off, but I'm definitely glad it happened sooner :3. I hope Manager finds out about this, she'll probably be kyaa!-ing for the whole next volume if she does, AND IT WILL BE AWESOME!

Still, it wasn't all great news, underling-san found out about Misaki's job... which may cause issues. I hope Takumi just totally wipes the floor with him by "accidentally" letting the progress he's made slip out. Yeah, maybe I'm being harsh, but he just feels like an intruder.

Also Aoi got her... erm, I mean his own special chapter. It was good fun and she---he made some friends. It was nice.

Maybe I should check out the anime, since volume 7 should have definitely made it in the story.

Also: sorry I've not had a chance to update the simulcast, I got busy with other things.

I just finished Code Geass R2 and I have to say, I enjoyed it. I think it might be a little over rated, but the second season was definitely above average. 7.5 or 8/10, IMHO. I do see the similarities between Death Note and it, however they are a lot different and the best thing to do is not compare them while watching. :P

Also, I'm going to watch Beelzebub a little tomorrow and I have heard a lot of good things about it. I'm excited and hoping the school day passes quickly. ^.^

If you like Cowboy Bebop then you have no choice but to watch Samurai Champloo. You'll like it provided that the feudal Japanese setting doesn't overwhelm you. Even then, it's really anachronistic with the hip-hop and pastiche influences.

Of those I've watched quite a few:
Beelzebub: An uncommon thug gets a baby... Satan's baby. He gets into fights with people, tries to find someone stronger to give the baby to, the baby shocks him with his magical powers. Mildly amusing but overly repetitive. Definitely not a must see.

Cardfight!! Vanguard: Stay away.

Dragon Crisis!: Not much going on here. Boy finds dragon, which happens to be in the form of a little girl. Boy protects dragon girl and goes on adventures. Generic but I love loli. :D

Fractale: People no longer travel the world in person, they use avatars called doppels. The avatars normally disappear when touched but some young lad finds a doppel that he can touch. This doppel seems to have a mind of her own. Interesting so far. Great animation, has a movie quality feel to it.

Freezing: Ecchi. Humans invaded by inter-dimensional beings and train Pandoras and Limiters to combat them. Besides the convenient ripping of clothing there isn't much going on here. The main character is, to me, unlikable. Almost every character is unlikable. It also doesn't make much sense. The main character and his future partner get into fights constantly yet they're on a military base and basically are human weapons.

Gosick: Cute loli detective solving crimes. Hilarious, good characters, must watch.

Houkago no Pleiades: Magical girls! Few episodes all of which are very short, not much depth but is pretty to look at. I'd say it's worth watching.

Wandering Son: Boy wants to be a girl. Girl wants to be a guy. Very unusual art, which I like very much. The story and dialogue are both quite good but all the characters are far too mature for their ages.

Infinite Stratos: Mecha. Usually only girls can pilot the mecha but the main character happens to be the exception. It's turning into your average harem/action series with a totally dense protagonist.

Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?: Guy gets murdered. Guy gets resurrected. Guy becomes magical girl (???). Hilarious action/comedy. I recommend.

Level E: Aliens live on Earth. Boy meets alien, hilarity ensues. Very funny, clever, and surprising. It's weird and sometimes feels like a giant troll but so far it's a must watch.

Mitsudomoe: Basically a comedy based on a series of misunderstandings. If you want some comedy, this will do well.

Rio: Rainbow Gate!: Stay away. Stay far, far away.
