Unofficial Anime Thread IX

Post » Fri Oct 08, 2010 6:43 pm

Welcome to the return of the anime thread. After a long break, we have been granted another chance to discuss anime in a centralized manner. Let's not ruin it and show them that their trust is well placed. Now for the rules. There are many new ones, so make sure you read them carefully:

1. This is for the discussion of all things anime and manga. Naturally this allows for discussion of related topics, but discussion is primarily about Japanese animation and manga. If you are not a fan of it, then this is not the place for you.

2. Be courteous of others and use spoiler tags when appropriate. This applies to all content both old and new.

3. Only anime/manga legally available in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand are allowed to be discussed.

4. Discussion of episodes/chapters that have yet to be released in these regions is strictly forbidden

5. Discussion of imported Asian DVDs is forbidden due to it being impossible to differentiate between someone importing a DVD and illegally downloading.

6. Discussing or requesting where you can download anime/manga is completely forbidden. This is illegal and clearly against the forum rules. There are some stores that legitimately sell anime online, such as iTunes and Funimation's Download-to-Own, and you may mention these services in the thread.

7. Discussing/Linking to episodes uploaded to Youtube (and other user-uploaded video sites) by persons other than official license holders is completely forbidden. This too is against forum rules.

8. Content unsuitable for minors is forbidden. This being a PG-13 forum, such content is not allowed. This applies to images and other linked content: no nudity and no extreme violence/gore. Discussion of these more "mature" series is ok, just don't link to any images of the more mature content. And obviously no pormography, discussion or linked content.

9. All forum rules are in effect (ie: no trolling, flamebaiting, etc)

10. Please report any offenses when you see them.

11. Anything anyone is uncertain about should be asked via PM prior to posting.

Title owes thanks to the awesome Oreimo, plus, who doesn't want to be greeted like that? (well, besides girls, obviously)

Anywho, my Christmas anime plans are to watch all of Toradora!, it has a Christmas episode after all. Other than that hopefully make some headway on the HUGE backlog of anime I've yet to watch. My hours at work got cut a bit for winter break compared to summer (I can remotely log in from home if they need me at the end of the day), meaning more time to watch anime (so... yay?). Probably watch Tokyo Godfathers too.

I'm pretty new to the anime scene, but I like it so far, I'm just a little... picky. I seem to like series that don't go on FOREVER, have plenty of action, some humor, and I love originality. I recently watched Gurren Lagann, and I'm in the process of watching Darker Than Black (I LOVE it btw). I just can't seem to find the time for it, I also suggest it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

In that case you NEED to watch http://www4.funimation.com/video/?page=show&b=6

I'll definitely look into that when I can, it sounds pretty friggin cool. I plan to try and finish Darker Than Black over Christmas break, after that I'll check this one out. Thanks for the suggestion. :D

I just finished watching Sword of the Stranger. I wish I'd seen it sooner, because it was amazing. It's definitely the best anime/OVA I've ever seen.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but FLCL Blu-ray (and DVD) has a http://www.amazon.com/FLCL-Complete-Collection-Kari-Wahlgren/dp/B004DMIIPA/ref=sr_1_28?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1293010857&sr=1-28 now, February 22. Apparently the picture quality isn't going to be that great, according to that one customer review regarding the Japanese Blu-ray, but I'm just happy I'll finally be able to get a legit copy of the show for a decent price.

I just got a new iPad, and wondering if there is anywhere i can watch anime on it. I know a. Few sites that use flash, so I downloaded skyfire, which so far hasn't down crap and I really don't like. I'm really into bleach lately and being able to watch it on my iPad would be great. Just please post any sites that you know of. Please.

You can download the http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crunchyroll-watch-anime-drama/id329913454?mt=8 and watch Bleach on Crunchyroll. That is, AFAIK, your only option. There are no legal anime streaming sites that don't use flash (and discussion of illegal ones is obviously strictly prohibited). I think there is a hulu app in the works (maybe it is already out, I dunno, I don't give two bits about iOS).

In other news:

Apparently Crunchyroll got the http://www.crunchyroll.com/good-luck-ninomiya-kun license, I wasn't even aware of this! Ever since Kadokawa USA played the first episode at AX 3 years ago, I've been looking forward to it. Not that the show is particularly good, but the ending song is one of my favorites EVER!

Yeah, which is why I got skyfire. It's suppose to support most flash, but it's been very... inconsistent and unfortunately doesn't support any of the sites I've tried. I have downloaded the Crunchyroll app, but unforutnately it requires a paid membership to watch all but like 20 episodes. The hulu app also requires a 10$/month membership. That's just to bad. Then, is there anywhere I can download the bleach episodes? Well, I've seen a few sites (pretty sure they're legal) but I'm really wondering if there's a bundle of them like 1-300 (perferably torrent) that I can use to leagally download them all.

There is no torrent for any anime approved by the copyright holder, and as such discussion of ANY torrents in this thread is strictly prohibited.

There are numerous anime titles available on iTunes for download, including Bleach. This is, for the most part and definitely for Bleach, the only permissible method for getting downloaded episodes of Bleach on your iPad. Since all other options are illegal, continuing to ask for other options will be seen as a violation of the thread rules.

So I recently seen Saya Otonashi's sword from Blood +, and I love how it looks. I found a http://www.trueswords.com/blood-anime-sword-replica-p-3007.html which is currently sold out of it. But anyways, I was wondering if anybody knew of any other replicas of this sword, or other swords that have that same 'dip' at the beginning of the blade. I don't know much about swords, but I know this one looks awesome. If you could help me find a decent looking sword, that has that dip at the beginning, I would really appreciate it. I can spend about $70 on it. Preferably less.
Thanks in advance.

Also http://www.medieval-armor.net/Products_3971_Blood-Plus-Anime-Sword.aspx, which looks a bit more awesome imo. But like I said, I know nothing about swords lol. I also dont know anything about these websites lol.

I have little knowledge of swords but I can impart some basic info I picked up when looking for a sword to buy my friend. And that info is basically summed up in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGTQLB1VQrA. Essentially, if you buy a cheap sword (and under $70 would be cheap), all they're good for is putting on a wall. If you all intended to do is stare at it, then great, but if you intended to actually try to fiddle around with it, then it's not worth your money.

Would aaanyone care to suggest an anime that either has a similar sense of off-beat humour as xxxholic, or is in general just similar to Monster? Sorry, I don't watch all that much anime now that I think of it.

I'm more of a fan of the holic manga, but my God they're beating at a dead horse now.

Thanks in advance, guys!

Ahh.. Well, like I said, I really like the style of that sword, how it has the dip near the hilt, which is the main reason I want it. But I also intend to 'fiddle' with it :)
So if anybody knows of a sword with similar style, please let me know.

So I watched Higurashi no naku Koro ni a night or two ago. I was wide-eyed the whole time. Really, really great anime. I hear the manga is pretty sweet, too.

Caught the live-action version of it on TV a few days back, a pretty nice show and followed quite faithfully to the original. Too bad it only has one story (you know, the one that he dies, yup, that one).

I really recommend the manga. It's really good. I personally think it's better than the anime.

Another thing that may interest you is the Visual Novel. MangaGamer licenses the English translation of it. I got a demo for it around here somewhere from their booth at AX *rummages*

I feel like an idiot, I swear I searched and didn't find this thread. >.< Anyway, so I've recently finished the entire Dragonball franchise and though I know it isn't the best in terms of overall, I just got really connected with the characters and its world more than most. Could also be natural after watching 508 episodes, but nonetheless. Also, after seeing it about eight months ago while browsing, I decided to sit down and watch Clannad. Currently on the 10th episode of the first part and am starting to enjoy it a lot. It starts out slower but then picks up your interest after a few eps. :P

I finished Clannad after a couple days, watched the extra ep and the OVA, and I really enjoyed it. More romantic/sad than most, but was expected. However, I heard that After Story was much better, it's just that it tends to be difficult to get the same feeling for an anime not in a language you can understand and you are made to read the dialogue. Should I just wait the extra three months until the English dub is released for it?

Finished up Kare Kano again to start off the new year ^_^. Unfortunately I think one of my DVDs is slightly damaged, as it hung at a part for a long time. I'm going to have to buy the series again :(

I'll be sure to add the Winter season simulcast to the OP as soon as I get the chance.

No. Sub is the only way to watch Clannad (or anime period IMO)

Also, get your tissue box ready for After Story, for if you are human, you will cry when watching it.

It's just that I'm already attached to these voices so I'm thinking I wouldn't get the full feeling from After Story.

Also, I'm prepared, somewhat. I'm not used to emotional anime so I ended up getting a little teary in a few of the episodes of the first part. :P

I definitely need to get my act together and start wading through the new season. Gosick looks good, I love some mystery, but from what I hear this season isn't starting off well.

I watched 17 episodes of Juuni Kokki. It's an older anime and it's really good. It has a lot of character development. I prefer watching it with Japanese audio.
