Unofficial Anime Thread X

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 7:40 pm

Welcome to the return of the anime thread. After a long break, we have been granted another chance to discuss anime in a centralized manner. Let's not ruin it and show them that their trust is well placed. Now for the rules. There are many new ones, so make sure you read them carefully:

1. This is for the discussion of all things anime and manga. Naturally this allows for discussion of related topics, but discussion is primarily about Japanese animation and manga. If you are not a fan of it, then this is not the place for you.

2. Be courteous of others and use spoiler tags when appropriate. This applies to all content both old and new.

3. Only anime/manga legally available in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand are allowed to be discussed.

4. Discussion of episodes/chapters that have yet to be released in these regions is strictly forbidden

5. Discussion of imported Asian DVDs is forbidden due to it being impossible to differentiate between someone importing a DVD and illegally downloading.

6. Discussing or requesting where you can download anime/manga is completely forbidden. This is illegal and clearly against the forum rules. There are some stores that legitimately sell anime online, such as iTunes and Funimation's Download-to-Own, and you may mention these services in the thread.

7. Discussing/Linking to episodes uploaded to Youtube (and other user-uploaded video sites) by persons other than official license holders is completely forbidden. This too is against forum rules.

8. Content unsuitable for minors is forbidden. This being a PG-13 forum, such content is not allowed. This applies to images and other linked content: no nudity and no extreme violence/gore. Discussion of these more "mature" series is ok, just don't link to any images of the more mature content. And obviously no pormography, discussion or linked content.

9. All forum rules are in effect (ie: no trolling, flamebaiting, etc)

10. Please report any offenses when you see them.

11. Anything anyone is uncertain about should be asked via PM prior to posting.

Title may seem innocuous, but it's from http://www.crunchyroll.com/my-ordinary-life/episode-1-573100. The scene starts at 8:45 and goes for two minutes, though the entire show is friggen awesome.

OP will be updated this weekend.

So, to continue the discussion of Slayers from the last thread, I can tell you now, you will either Love, or HATE Naga when you get to the movies. Mainly due to the aforementioned laugh. I love it, but my buddy, who introduced me to Slayers, absolutely hates her.

Also, I would suggest, that once you start watching Slayers, if you find you really like it, perhaps giving Sorcerer Hunters a try. Somewhat similar, and every bit as hilarious. Storyline isn't QUITE as good, but it's better then most imho.

Has anyone watched Magical Knight Rayearth? I have the complete collection sitting under my desk, but have not gotten around to watching it yet.

At first I wasn't crazy about Naga's laugh, but then there was an OVA I think where she got cloned and had like a dozen mindless copies of herself following her around, and they'd all laugh at the same time, and that alone defeated the bad guys.

It was hilarious. Now I think Naga is one of the best characters. She's a perfect compliment to Lina, and so hardheadedly overconfident no matter what.

So, I finally got to see Evangelion 2.22 just now and now that I've wiped up the drool, I feel like I must rave about it. :P I love the original series, but I think I like this new direction even more. I was a bit skeptical after 1.11. I really liked it, but I didn't necessarily like the idea of a faster-paced retelling. 2.22 put an end to that doubt with the very first scene. The pacing does still feel a bit off, the Angels seemingly forming a queue outside the Earth's atmosphere, but even that feels more like nitpicking.

Two things though:

1. Needs moar Asuka. I was very disappointed the way she was handled.
2. Hard subs svck, Funimation. Even for song lyrics.

SO I don't usually go for wallets, because usually they're not real leather and of poor quality, but for whatever reason I had to order this http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61LhhVzKyIL._SL500_AA300_.jpg. I'm hoping it's good, since it's canvas instead of "leather".

Also ended up ordering the Kino no Tabi DVD set. I don't quite like the http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/514C3C0%2B9zL.jpg, I won't lie, but it's a minor nitpick and the show is one of my favorites that I will certainly re-watch.

Bah, I can't say I particularly abide by either 1.11 or 2.22. I'm too much of a purist for straight up re-makes like that.

Visually I was quite impressed, story-wise... less so.

Mari got hardly any air-time despite being a new character, and as you said Asuka didn't get handled well at all. Also it was faaar too fast-paced in proceeding for my liking. Blink a couple of times and it was the equivalent of missing 3 or 4 episodes from the series. Miss half the movie and you missed over half the series. Also the music... I'm not going to rant about that again, you can look up my rant in the last thread to hear my thoughts on that copypasta matter.

I watched it with subtitles on (never will watch a dub willingly) so I didn't have a problem with any hardsubbing (I'm guessing it was the music during the scene where the plug took over that was hard-subbed)

In the context of the one film I'd agree, but with two more on the way I'm not too worried about Mari. On the other hand, Asuka came and went in the blink of an eye and seems to be in no position for a quick rebound (as pertaining to Rebuild anyway). She did just that in End of Evangelion, but 2.0 basically ended a ways into that point of the timeline and her situation now seems a bit more dire.

As for the pacing, compared to the series it isn't ideal. It lacks much of the character development that made the original more appealing to me than your average mecha show, but I suppose I consider Rebuild a separate work entirely (despite it technically being a straight remake) because of how many changes have already occurred. On it's own I thought it worked well and I think 3.0/Final will be much better in that regard since they aren't being compared to anything.

Considering I'm late to this discussion and it's probably all been talked about many times over, I'll let you all get back to more relevant shows. :P

Was an anime freak in my early teens. Since then I've boiled it down to a few that I can still stand to watch. Unfortunately the very best ones ended years ago. Some of my favorites are as follows:

Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
Trigun
Berserk
Dragonball
Dragonball Z (The first and second season only. Apparently Akira meant for it to end once Goku hit SSJ, but someone saw a cash cow...)

I never really noticed it before, but I'm starting to see how different the pacing of certain series are. Specifically, Dragon Ball/Z when compared to other manga/anime that are slightly influenced by it. I've noticed that "modern" plots have much more well developed characters, and seem to be going on much longer than Dragon Ball/Z did. It is very odd, but I suppose that I like it.

I'm also pissed that Buso Renkin was cut. I'd like to see more of that. Really, though, I'd want another RuroKen based around Yahiko, because damn, he is bad ass when he grows up.

Finally, I like the direction Bleach is moving in, with the whole arc based about Chad-type powers.

Despite my high disappointment in 2.0, I still have high hopes for 3.0 and Final. Basically I'm feeling that 2.0 is going to be the low-point in the series for numerous reasons -- Though that's better than the low-point being the ending as it has in the past :whistling:

And not much discussion has gone on about it. A lot of people haven't seen it still.

Anyone know some reputable sites for buying anime DVDs besides Amazon.com? There are a few older series I want to order, but I want to make sure I get the best price.

Right Stuf has a large selection, but I think Ebay is also a good place to get deals. I bought a boxset on Ebay for only $35, when it cost $150 on Amazon. Just make sure it's not from China, or Malaysia, or Indonesia, or Hong Kong. :P

Sometimes, the makers/distributors of the anime itself might have good deals. I got the first 2 seasons of Slayers for like 25 bucks off the distributors site. On the other hand, my wife got the entire collection of Rurouni Kenshin for like 18 bucks. LOL. Considering I've seen that thing for 100+ usually, she got one helluva a deal. She was terrified she wasn't going to get it, the person had no feedback, plus, the fact she got it for 18 bucks. But, it came, and I was very happy christmas morning to unwrap that gift(Around 100 episodes if you're unsure to the size of it)

Indeed. Almost all anime I buy is from Right Stuf. I think I have like maybe 7 titles I bought from not-Right Stuf.

My loyalty to Right Stuf may or may not be due to a certain anime they licensed. Either way, though, they oftentimes do have the cheapest prices.

Thanks! I ordered Gurren Lagann and Haruhi Suzumiya together for $20 cheaper than I would pay on Amazon. Considering Amazon charges tax though, I probably saved even more.

Currently browsing their bargain bin section and it's amazing.

I admit they have some really good stuff. I'm considering of dropping the $175 or whatever it is for the full box set of You're Under Arrest on there. *wishes they still had the BluRay Kara no Kyoukai for $450 instead*

Hey, does anybody know if Sora no Woto has any form of BluRay release in Japan? It's got a DVD release for pre-order on Rightstuf, but I don't want to get it if there's a chance they're holding out on the BD release in America for whatever reason.

I've tried multiple anime titles throughout the years: Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Deathnote, etc... I really just cannot get into this style of animation. I love that many of the studios still use traditional animation practices, and enjoyed Ponyo and that movie with the little girl and the black gooey demon that rejurgitates gold coins, but so many of them make me sleepy. It's not the foreign dubbing that bothers me (I watched and loved Epitafios) or the animation (like I said I enjoyed other similar products on a short term) and I really love animated shows like Metalocalypse, or The Simpsons, but something about the genre just bores me silly....
