Unofficial Anime Thread VII

Well yeah, it's because Arakawa-sama had to take a break from writing. but Bones wanted to GOGOGO like a raider in WoW.

Spoiler
In my mind the ending to the Conqueror of Shamballa was kind of depressing if you take a look at real world things at the time, if they stay in europe with the gypsies bad things are going to happen. Even though the OVA collection obviously shows Edward survives somehow, but it was about a few months inbetween that i got to see the OVA collection. still have yet to see Reflections, if thats what its called. The 55 minute OVA

Well I've been watching FMA Brotherhood and it's so much better than the first anime series (and I liked that one a lot). It's crazy how far away from the manga the first anime was.

Spoiler
I was sad to see that Lust really didn't have much to her in this one though. She died so soon. :( She was my favorite homunculus in the first anime, and her story was nice in that one.

It was surprisingly similar up until the appearance of Greed. I almost stopped watching Brotherhood because I thought it was going to be more of the same. Very glad I didn't.

Spoiler
Yeah, Lust really didn't have a large part to play, but she did have a big part of the original series. The tradeoff though, is that the other homunculi really get fleshed out, we have a better origin story for them, IMHO, and overall, more dynamic. But we lost our Lust.....

Wow, that's some dedication..... but you got a ways to go.

I don't know if I could sit through the entire anime series up to this point. With manga, you can read at your own pace.... with anime though, you have to sit and watch it as it happens. A 25 minute episode is going to last you 25 minutes of watching. Once I start watching something I usually can't stop until I'm caught up, and 129+ episodes isn't healthy on my standard (and I have a pretty low standard....)

That said, I usually watch the best fights on various amv's. Some fights are just drawn out and made slightly better in the anime versions, so I always check to see what's been changed.

Spoiler
The Luffy vs. Lucci fight has to be one of my favorite anime fights of all time. Very intense.

I really wanted to get back into that but it's over 400 episodes now. Ridonculous.

And yeah, FMA: Brotherhood is 100000000x better than the original. Just the introduction of Olivier alone makes it more win.

I really don't understand the need for a series to go that long

I'm enjoying it as well but it's starting to drag on

Luckily it feels like it's gonna end soon since

That's what happens when some schmucks decide to do an adaptation of a manga series...that's long-running...unfinished...and try to remain completely faithful to it. :shakehead:

So I just watched Akira! It feels great to no longer be committing the seemingly taboo act of liking anime and not having seen Akira. I watched it dubbed first, so that was rather unpleasant as the words didn't even come close to matching up with the mouth movements. Next time I play the DVD I'll have to watch it with subs. But other than that, it was enjoyable. I can see why artists always rave about it, the scenes and backgrounds were all so well done. The plot felt kind of generic, and before you yell at me I know it only seems generic because so many animes after it were inspired by it. I'm sure that, had I seen it when it first came out, the plot would have been much better to me.

I also picked up a DVD of Paranoia Agent. I've only watched two episodes so far but it seems really good. I look forward to watching more.

I dunno how faithful One Piece is (never really cared for the show, stopped after around 10 episodes) is to the source, but I know other long-running series *cough* Naruto *cough* are full of fillers and junk not in the manga.

Yeah, there reaches a point with classics where so many new movies have drawn from the classics, and you've seen all the movies that have been inspired by it, that by the time you see the original.... you've pretty much already seen the original :P

I too watched Akira just to say I've seen it. And yeah, after everything that's come after it, nothing that spectacular  but iconic for its time, so yeah :)

I prefer subtitles to dubbing any day, and not just for anime, for anything. The native language I find is, 9 times out of 10, the best (only been a handful of situations in which I thought the dub was at least comparable, if not superior.... and I can't think of them at the moment, but I know they're there :P)

And for anime especially, since I speak Japanese anyway ;)

The only reason those series have so many fillers is because the series is so popular that the series keeps almost overrunning the manga! And we can't have that!

I typically ignore any filler when it comes to anime (especially Naruto). And from what I've seen of One Piece, it seems pretty faithful.

The filler is part of the problem. The big thing about trying to do a faithful animated adaptation of an incomplete manga is that you only have so much source material to base it off of before you cover it all, which is where the issues arise. In order to keep the anime series going while remaining faithful to the original story (as opposed to going in a different direction or utilizing a http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GeckoEnding), the filler is produced to effectively kill time (and keep both the studios and audience occupied) and allow the plot in the manga to gain some distance before returning to it. End result: an animated adaptation of an already lengthy story that has little, if anything, cut out but a whole bunch of worthless padding added.

Yup. I would greatly prefer studios take a break for a while and then start up again... of course doing that means sitting on a high-valued IP without making any materials of it, and that is just not allowed  (an example of this would be Maria Watches Over Us)

alas, this is why I don't watch long-running series. Longest series I followed was YuYu Hakusho (112 episodes)

Long live the 12-26 episode series!

Especially the music

I think I'll stick with this for a while

I regret my decision to watch that. The main character and his love interest are totally unlikeable and for at least the first half of the series everything is so damn repetitive.

I liked the main character

And the love interest isn't that bad
Spoiler

Overall the series was pretty decent and the ending was kinda bleh

Spoiler
and no it's not because they didn't have six to save the world DEFRON :P

Moving on the Kaze no Stigma

Started watching it on Hulu. The first episode is interesting so I'm gonna check out the rest of it out.

Finished Paranoia Agent yesterday. The first 7 episodes were really great, but then things took a disappointing turn for super-duper-crazy town and just went random and insane. I mean, I liked it, but it seems like after episode 7 it started trying really really hard to screw with your mind, unlike the first couple of episodes where it just made you stop and think. Don't get me wrong, I totally get the ending and why what happened happened, but it just seems like it went far too crazy.

There is an OVA

(currently re-watching this series, on episode 13)

I'd suggest checking out Azumanga Daioh if you liked Lucky Star

So a couple of months ago I finally watched Trigun. I'd heard a lot about it and I'm sure many of you have seen it as it is rather popular. Anyone have anything to say about it? It personally love the world they live in - a blend of wild west in a future setting on a distant planet.

I need some anime suggestions. I've been watching Bleach, Wolf's Rain and other animes like them but I'm growing tired of them. I grew tired of both because they where alittle to serious I want some thing more light hearted. I also got tired of Bleach as it just got too complicated and the plot holes really screwed up any seasons after the first 2. So I am looking for a series that is more light hearted and not extremely complex where the story gets screwed around on itself. I would also prefer it not to be 1000 episodes long but that isn't that important. I also have been wondering about some anime movies its worth note that I have never seen "Spirited Away" or any thing really. I've heard things about "My Neighbor Totoro" is it any good?

Anime series to recommend: Fairy Tail (though I've only seen a couple of episodes) but it's very lighthearted (that or Rave Master)

I've heard good things about My Neighbor Totoro as well but I've never seen it myself

are you looking for something actiony, slice-of-life, sci-fi, romance, or what?

For action I would recommend Baccano! It's story is a bit complex/hard to follow due to how it is told, but it is hilarious and light-hearted (primarily due to Isaac and Miria). Black Cat would probably be another good option with a simple story, finally round off this section with a Gurren Lagann recommendation.

for slice-of-life it doesn't get any more light-hearted than Azumanga Daioh, Pani Poni Dash is another one. For something more serene and relaxing there is the Aria series line. Lucky Star is another great option, but is so full of parodies many may not appreciate it who haven't seen other anime.

Sci-fi is a bit hard to nail, as some may not consider these "sci-fi" enough, but poopy on them. Full Metal Panic! goes here (Fumoffu, the second season, arguably belongs in the romance category more than in here). Time of Eve (available on Crunchyroll) is another one, very short, but a bit heavier on the story. It too could arguably be put in romance. My #1 recommendation goes to The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, though.

romance, #1 goes to School Rumble hands down. the same mangaka created Natsu no Arashi! (available on Crunchyroll), and Hayate the Combat Butler is very good fun (I don't think any of these I listed can be considered all that overly romantic, all focusing more on comedy )

My Neighbor Totoro is a wonderful movie, still my favorite Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli movie. Spirited Away probably places 3rd or 4th on that list.
