Unofficial Anime Thread VII

are you looking for something actiony, slice-of-life, sci-fi, romance, or what?

For action I would recommend Baccano! It's story is a bit complex/hard to follow due to how it is told, but it is hilarious and light-hearted (primarily due to Isaac and Miria). Black Cat would probably be another good option with a simple story, finally round off this section with a Gurren Lagann recommendation.

for slice-of-life it doesn't get any more light-hearted than Azumanga Daioh, Pani Poni Dash is another one. For something more serene and relaxing there is the Aria series line. Lucky Star is another great option, but is so full of parodies many may not appreciate it who haven't seen other anime.

Sci-fi is a bit hard to nail, as some may not consider these "sci-fi" enough, but poopy on them. Full Metal Panic! goes here (Fumoffu, the second season, arguably belongs in the romance category more than in here). Time of Eve (available on Crunchyroll) is another one, very short, but a bit heavier on the story. It too could arguably be put in romance. My #1 recommendation goes to The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, though.

romance, #1 goes to School Rumble hands down. the same mangaka created Natsu no Arashi! (available on Crunchyroll), and Hayate the Combat Butler is very good fun (I don't think any of these I listed can be considered all that overly romantic, all focusing more on comedy )

My Neighbor Totoro is a wonderful movie, still my favorite Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli movie. Spirited Away probably places 3rd or 4th on that list.

Thanks Ive well have to check out Azumanga Daioh and some of the others,

Sunday:

No Complications

The Black Lagoon OVA seems like it will be replayed on Saturday before the Black Lagoon panel, and if that is the case then I guess I can go to the later one of that. Asakawa > Bandai, since she is a guest of honor so I will probably never get a chance again

The Right Stuf panel is always a biggie for me, so it looks like I will have to miss out on Eden of the East.

The one I am most torn on is Saturday, I think I will just commit harakiri that day...

On the bright side, all the excercise I will get from running around the convention center from one panel to another will be a great cardio workout ^_^

Gonna try to get Nabeshin sign to sign my Excel Saga Box Set and Yui Horie to sign my Fruits Basket box set, wish me luck. Also thinking about going to MELL's performance.

Started watching bleach

I've decided to skip all the filler episodes

I skipped about 13 of the first episodes as I considered them all filler

I have a feeling my episode cutting will lead to some confusion though

You should watch all of the first 20 episodes. Things will make A LOT more sense then they would if you didn't watch them.

I've actually seen most of the first 20 episodes so I have a good idea of what's going on

I've also probably seen up to the 40th episode or so (last I remember Ichigo was looking for his true sword or something while fighting his zanpacto but I'm certain I've seen farther than that)

So I'm about to skip another five episodes at least

That's Ichigo training for his bankai. Starts on episode 45.

Ichigo meets Rukia -> Ichigo gets Rukia's Soul Reaper powers -> Ichigo kills Hollows because Rukia has no powers now -> Rukia is taken back to SS to be executed while Ichigo is attacked by Rukia's captors and his power is removed -> Ichigo regains his powers with the help of Urahara before he is turned into a hollow -> Ichigo goes after Rukia -> random crap happens in Soul Society -> Ichigo finds Rukia and gets owned by her brother -> Yoruichi saves Ichigo and starts his bankai training -> OTHER STUFF

I'm back ^_^ miss me? Brought lots of goodies with me, that I will be uploading after I finish unpacking

And since it hasn't been said yet: Bandai licensed K-On! at AX, Right Stuf licensed Sora no Woto for DVD release at AX. No release date on K-On! available yet (expect 2011), Early 2011 for Sora no Woto (if this will have any effect on Crunchyroll's streaming license has not been said yet).

This isn't all the pictures I took, and it doesn't include the videos either (will upload those when I get the chance)

The first shot of the Nabeshin cosplayer came from this panel. He was pretending to be the Great Macrocosm and then unveiled his true self when asking Nabeshin a question.

Later someone asked Nabeshin if he would make an anime with him. He said if he raised the money that he would. Right afterwards I ran up and threw some money on the panel table. After a huge laughter and a bit of silence after Nabeshin said he would need a million times more money a few more people followed suit (I only have a video of the aftermath, I will try to find the entire video if I can)

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/DEFRON/AX%202010/darklord.jpg (AKA: Shawne Kleckner, CEO of Right Stuf/Nozomi). As usual I asked a question. I told him I was his humble liege. He asked to prove it with my wallet, so I ran up and threw some money on the table (again). Hilarity ensued). I will see if I can find a youtube video, otherwise the audio should be in the next AnimeToday podcast

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/DEFRON/AX%202010/ryan.jpg It is the one time of the year I am forced to listen to him, though, but he never helps me out when I am in a jam in line :(

I had a great time at this year's AX for the most part, but as I predicted Saturday was really screwed up. I ended up not getting to do anything I wanted to do, stood in line for 3 hours trying to get Yui Horie to sign my copy of Fruits Basket, and didn't end up getting it signed :( Beyond that, though, it was perfect. Spent a bit more money than I should have, though.

The US premier of Toradora! didn't really happen when it was supposed to: One NIS played it at their booth the entire convention. Two I bought the first half day 1 of the convention. and three they showed episode one during Yui Horie's panel

Deffers needs a better camera.

I'm taking those Lucky Star girls home. >.>

The second one looks familiar, maybe she did the same thing last year.

I keep telling myself that every year. This camera is a 6 or 7 year-old point-and-shoot, been broken open twice, and can't take pictures for crap most of the time without flash. I could maybe fetch $10 or $15 for it on ebay if I was lucky. But between anime and my car I have no spare money :(

And, yeah, she cosplayed that last year too: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/DEFRON/AX%202009/Lucky_Star2.jpg. I ran into a good number of the same cosplayers this year, but I didn't run into the Negima cosplay group I have ran into every year. I've been meaning to check to see if they did it this year or not.

Watched Macross Plus last week.

Pretty awesome. It had much less focus on the fighting and much more on the characters, which I was okay with. Its funny how much Macross focuses on music as some sort of magical human unity device or something. At least I didn't have to put up with Minmei or her whining.

Okay so I've gotten through 64 episodes of Bleach (mostly skipping through most of the filler episodes and episodes I had seen before)

So I got to the part where

Spoiler
Ichigo "saves" Rukia but the nerdy guy turns out to be the bad guy and steals the little sphere of power thingy inside Rukia and makes his escape.

Now then I could keep watching or I could end it there

Do I really want to keep watching or do I just want to pretend that Ichigo saved Rukia and they decided to go back to the living world and make babies together?

That was Aizen. Aizen is a lame character. It is theorized that Aizen is actually Kubo, the author, because of all the [censored] hax he has.

If you keep watching, skip to the beginning of the Arrancar arc, episode 110. A lot of the Arrancar fights are pretty interesting.

If you liked the show so far, I'd recommend that you keep on watching.

If you don't get the reference I'm watching FMP!

So far it seems really interesting but I really have no idea what's going on but I've heard good things about it so I'll stick with it

Found out that Ghost in a Shell 2nd GIG is on Netflix instant que . Anyhow now like on episode 14 , it is quite good. I watched Ghost in a Shell 2.0 I would advise diehard fans not to watch it all voices are different except for one or two of the people at section 9 and the animation is different too, it was ok though. I am so glad with all the anime licenses though.

Finished Lucky Star again and Strike Witches, as well as the first half of Toradora!

I applied for the replacement program NIS is doing for the Toradora! DVDs, because there is serious ghosting going on with them. I'd suggest waiting until this gets fixed before buying them (supposed to be some time around the release of the second half in August)

Finished Strike Witches just in time, Crunchyroll is simulcasting Strike Witches 2

I couldn't get into Strike witches just the thing with no pants and only underwear seemed the whole show was like fan service . Which on the topic of Lucky Star I must watch it for a third time! Love it!

OP updated. Winter 2010 is out, Summer 2010 is in. Enjoy.

(Also bleach fans not aware that it has been in simulcast for a month now can yell at me all you want for not including it until now)

It was entertaining, and I've seen more fanservice-y stuff before  Gonna watch the OVA of Lucky Star for the second time later tonight ^_^

I'm not sure if any of you are watching the Dragon Ball Kai broadcast on Nicktoons(Wish that a channel that didn't cut things out would broadcast), but don't you think only two new episodes a week is pretty slow? I mean, maybe it's from watching like five episodes a day of Dragon Ball when I rewatched it a month ago, but still. I think I'm about to just buy all of the sagas of Dragon Ball Z to get the filler and watch as many as I like.

On another subject, how many here have watched Blood+?

I was shocked that

Spoiler
Rick got together with Lisa instead of Minmei at the end

absolutely shocked!

I did not see that coming (well as I got later into the series I kinda did)

Watching Last Exile again, such an awesome anime

The plot, the animation, the music, everything works so well together in that anime

WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday night (actually, almost exactly 24 hours ago) I placed a bid on an ebay item, this morning I wake up to find out I won it. the item in question? http://www.1999.co.jp/itbig06/10063494a10.jpg I had to pay a pretty penny, but not all that much inflated. It's release price was around $125 as I recall, plus shipping probably would put it at at least $150 (big item). a very well spent $210 seeing how this figurine has been out of print for 2.5 years now.

Thinking of buying the newly announced 1/4 scale FREEing Minami Iwasaki (Lucky Star) figurine too.

2 episodes a week is fast by my standards. most standard TV shows only get one new episode a week, some only every other week.

Now is a wonderful time for Dragonball Z fans to buy the series: FUNimation has been releasing all episodes (work in progress still IIRC) as uncut. meaning you get the real deal (just make sure to get the uncut box sets, as older ones are still a-plenty)

w00t. I'm definitely thinking about doing that. I mean, sure Kai is nice and pretty with it's frame corrections, 16:9 format, etc, but cutting down to 100 eps from 300 can't give you the same feeling afterward.
