Spoiler
Being sliced in the stomach, with all that soft, squishy flesh, and vulnerable organs isn't a plausible way to die?

Spoiler
For most people, yes, but this is Spike. In the first episode he fought Vicious in, he was confronted with a barrage of bullets by multiple gunmen, got stabbed in the shoulder by V's sword, and got pushed out of a 4th or 5th story window, landing on what was clearly hard cement. Then in the next scene, he wakes up in the Bebop, in a full body cast, but still alive. I mean, when you let a character survive that, getting cut in the stomach and bleeding to death seconds later seems like a very hard to believe way for him to die. I mean, sure, it's realistic, but most of the fights, and injuries sustained in the fights, in this series are far from realistic. So getting a realistic ending just doesn't feel right.

When I wrote my first post, I had just come out of a long night of watching all of the episodes for the first time and I guess my cries of "He didn't have to die" were more an emotional response than anything else. I still don't think he had to die, and it would have been a great use of a subverted trope if he didn't, but this show is great at making you feel for the characters and honestly I was just pretty damn sad to see him die.

The ending of Cowboy Bebop surely makes it more memorable, no?

I'll certainly remember the good hour or so of depression I had after seeing it, that's for sure. :sadvaultboy:

My memory may be wrong but

Spoiler
I don't think it's ever really confirmed that he died although the indications that he died are strong. Still I'm pretty sure it was just left open ended for you, the viewer, to decide if he died or not.

You're correct, quoth Watanabe: "I've never officially said that he died. At this point, I can tell you that I'm not sure if he's alive or dead." Thanks to the aforementioned foreshadowing and the "http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TethercatPrinciple," though...

Spoiler
Three words: suspension of disbelief. During Ballad of Fallen Angels, Spike first gets stabbed in the shoulder (a classic Hollywood “safe place” to get injured), and we never see him land after he’s thrown out of the church, so we can safely assume that he fell on something that broke his fall…enough to severely injure, but not outright kill him. Not to mention Faye was in the area when that happened, and she made an emergency call to Jet, so people who could have saved him were available that time. Neither is the case in the finale, when we see him take a sword across the abdomen (which isn’t nearly as “safe” as the shoulders or limbs), and the Bebop crew isn’t anywhere we can see to come save the day. And even if Spike hadn’t died from his injuries (which is possible and happened to him several times before), and just passed out, honestly, what do you think the gun-toting mobsters on the roof, flabbergasted as they are, are going to do with him?

Spoiler
They wouldn't do anything. Killing Vicious made him leader of Red Dragon. That's how Vicious became the leader and it would technically make Spike leader by default. It's not like the goons didn't know he wasn't staging a coup of his own. After all, in the scene before Spike gets to Vicious, that guy who was helping him, (who's name I forgot), said something along the lines of "I knew you would come back to become leader someday." Like I said in my first post, he could have technically just walked out of there and not encountered any opposition, being the leader and all.

Spoiler
I'm afraid it's not as simple as that, the Red Dragons weren't some simple warrior tribe ready to grovel on the toes of whoever was strongest, they were a full-fledged criminal organization, meaning you need a lot of connections, friends, and firepower to have any legitimate rank in it. Spike wasn't part of the syndicate anymore, and all the friends and allies he had within it were dead and gone (that guy you mentioned, Shin, was pretty much the last one). Vicious was a high-ranking member who had allies and subordinates to back him up (and who were involved in his coup). Spike, meanwhile, was a single outsider with no one at his command, and at that point, alone against a whole crowd of people coming to kill him specifically, while half-dead at best.

That's a good point. Well, I don't see much point in debating anymore considering it was never actually confirmed if he died or not. I personally would be quite disappointed if he was dead, and as you said, you wouldn't be. No point in arguing over it anymore.

Where do you buy your figurines?

Various places :P

Online from various stores, Anime Expo, Small Wonders, and Anime King are the places I buy most of them from (those last two are local brick and mortar stores that I like to support).

Currently I have http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10115788 on preorder

*sigh* I won't be getting it until September at the earliest, though.

I think they are more concerned about things like the piling amount of pink shoujo manga I have in my room and http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/DEFRON/Ouran.jpg (which I recently started rewatching)

No wonder you get such good quality figures, they cost a fortune! I buy them pretty cheap on eBay but they're not very detailed. I should start saving up and buy a mega awesome figurine.

So, can anyone recommend me any good space drama animes like Cowboy Bebop? One of the things I liked most was the setting, were there were multiple different settings across the solar system. I'm not normally a fan of such soft science fiction, but it was so great that I excused it. I have a long list of animes I want to watch, but I don't believe many of them are space dramas. Before you recommend an anime, though, don't mention it if it's heavily reliant on mechs to further the story (some mech combat like Code Geass is fine), and don't mention it if there isn't a good amount of space exploration involved.

Oh, and warn me if a main character dies like at the end of Cowboy Bebop, as I'm still having a hard time getting over it and would enjoy seeing a less depressing ending in my next anime. :sadvaultboy:

Thanks :D

in b4 Outlaw Star...

BTW: Have you consider Outlaw Star? :P

Besides that, the only thing I would consider recommending with no mechs is The Irresponsible Captain Taylor (though this is much so a comedy)

Outlaw Star looks interesting, thanks, I'll look into it. But I didn't mean I don't want to see any mechs, considering most animes in space have them, I'd just like to seem them not play a vital role in the story. Like in Code Geass, where were only used for fighting, but the story didn't rely on them.

Mayhap you need to get yourself some more MANime and MANga! :P

You could try Crest of the Stars. I personally didn't care for it too much, but you might think differently. There's also its sequel Banner of the Stars, though I'm not familiar with that at all.

Leiji Matsumoto's assorted series might be up your alley, like Galaxy Express 999 (of which there's a standalone movie and 100+ episode series that tell the same story) and Captain Harlock, though these are really more fantasy stories set in space opera setting with a healthy dose of steampunk thrown in.

Yeah, I was thinking this too, but the romance-centricity of the story made me decide otherwise (really, the rest of my suggestions belong either in space romance or space harem. Except SDF Macross, which is space romance with mechs :P)

I couldn't get into the whole "trains in space" thing, I'm not cool enough apparently :(

So I'm watching Strike Witches (decided to see what it was about)

And so I can only imagine what would happen if one of them got shot down and this is the first thing that popped into my mind

Watched Akira last night.

Holy freaking crap, there are no words to describe that work of art in motion. Calling it a masterpiece is an understatement. I had never known the plot of Akira, only the setting, and...just wow. I'm surprised I could go to sleep after that.

I just watched that recently too. I have no freaking clue what actually happened in the story though, it was even more confusing than Serial Experiments Lain.

Might as well ask here, does anyone know of any legal streaming sites that will work outside the US? I know there's a lot of legal anime streaming out there, but I'm having trouble finding a site that is available for non US citizens, which is complete crap in my opinion, but that's the way it is.

Not sure if Crunchyroll works but you might want to try that

Other than that you could try the official Youtube anime channels that's listed in the OP

That's the best I got

It would help knowing exactly what country you are In.

Crunchyroll works for a good many countries, but it is video-dependent depending on where they got the license to stream to (they try to get as many as they can, obviously). I also included a link for our Aussie friends in the OP as well
