Unofficial Anime Thread VII

Post » Tue Apr 06, 2010 10:31 am

Welcome to the return of the anime thread. After a long break, we have been granted another chance to discuss anime in a centralized manner. Let's not ruin it and show them that their trust is well placed. Now for the rules. There are many new ones, so make sure you read them carefully:

1. This is for the discussion of all things anime and manga. Naturally this allows for discussion of related topics, but discussion is primarily about Japanese animation and manga. If you are not a fan of it, then this is not the place for you.

2. Be courteous of others and use spoiler tags when appropriate. This applies to all content both old and new.

3. Only anime/manga legally available in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand are allowed to be discussed.

4. Discussion of episodes/chapters that have yet to be released in these regions is strictly forbidden

5. Discussion of imported Asian DVDs is forbidden due to it being impossible to differentiate between someone importing a DVD and illegally downloading.

6. Discussing or requesting where you can download anime/manga is completely forbidden. This is illegal and clearly against the forum rules. There are some stores that legitimately sell anime online, such as iTunes and Funimation's Download-to-Own, and you may mention these services in the thread.

7. Discussing/Linking to episodes uploaded to Youtube (and other user-uploaded video sites) by persons other than official license holders is completely forbidden. This too is against forum rules.

8. Content unsuitable for minors is forbidden. This being a PG-13 forum, such content is not allowed. This applies to images and other linked content: no nudity and no extreme violence/gore. Discussion of these more "mature" series is ok, just don't link to any images of the more mature content. And obviously no pormography, discussion or linked content.

9. All forum rules are in effect (ie: no trolling, flamebaiting, etc)

10. Please report any offenses when you see them.

11. Anything anyone is uncertain about should be asked via PM prior to posting.

subtitle from Spice and Wolf, which, btw, FUNimation aquired the license to season 2. Expect it to be released some time between November 2010 and March 2011. I was tempted to put in the name of a certain train from Baccano! instead, but decided better :P

Also, DEFRON, I want those Yuki figurines, especially the witch one. :P

Witch Yuki = best Yuki

I also have a small Mikuru nurse and Kyon's sister that I haven't put together yet.

New Simulcast series from FUNimation added: The Tatami Galaxy.

Just picked up Cowboy Bebop Remix the other day. Has the complete series...26 episodes.

It was extremely nice to sit down and watch the entire series back to back...for 11 hours!!

I highly recommend this to anyone.

I finished both Ghost in the Shell:SAC and Second Gig. I've got to say, I think that they're both great, but it seems to me like Second Gig is a lot slower, while SAC is much faster and has a bit better focus on the action, while Second Gig seems to focus more on the characters themselves. Although, there was something about

watching Gouda get shot in the face until his head flew off his mouth hinges.

I was thinking about grabbing Armored Trooper VOTOMS. Can anyone recommend it to me? I read that its pretty realistic as it comes to mecha (on the count of the mecha being only 10-12 feet tall). It apparently also has a nice dark atmosphere (is it close to Berserk!? If so, I'm all over it). Any thoughts?

I actually just bought that earlier today. I've only watched a few episodes on advlt Swim but they were all great. I really look forward to watching every episode back to back in one day when the DVD comes.

I concur with your assessment of GiTS:SAC and Second Gig.

Armored Trooper VOTOMS was time well spent for me. The mecha are more realistic, and the atmosphere is certainly gloomy, if not Stygian. I have not seen Berserk yet, therefore cannot draw a parallel between the two anime.

Such a naughty subtitle for a thread...

Still, generally been without much to watch after I finished Spice & Wolf and NHK- enjoyed the latters' dark humour. Been re-watching Cowboy Bebop.

Geh. I hate when I buy manga and read it all in one sitting.

I bought the first two volumes of Skip Beat today, thinking that surely I won't read two volumes in quick succession... I was wrong :(

Anybody watching "House of Five Leaves: In Name Only"? Episodes upload onto Hulu http://www.hulu.com/house-of-five-leaves. It's pretty interesting.

It definitely is interesting to watch, even though it seems rather slow going.

They have already introduced some people that seem to keep coming back, so to me it hints at a more involved overarching plot in the future.

The premise is certainly interesting though, and I just realized they posted the third episode when I posted that link, so I just finished watching it  quite good.

I am more interested in FUNimation's other simulcast for this season: http://www4.funimation.com/video/?page=show&b=308, though I haven't gotten around to watching any episodes of either yet due to too much school and regular work.

Yeah, I quite enjoyed the anime (available http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Skip_Beat!) so when I saw it in the shop I said "What the heck, I'll buy the first two volumes"

Then when reading it, I find out the second volume ends right before the tea ceremony when Kyoko has a broken leg, one of my favorite scenes, and well before Moko gets a decent roll

I get paid tomorrow, so I will probably buy another two volumes next week. I bought the first two volumes and just 2 1/2 hours later they were both finished :(

I'm having the same problems with the Haruhi Suzumiya books. There's only 2 released out here - The Melancholy and the Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya, whereas in Japan, all 9 books are out. Sure, I could import the books, but I can't read Japanese. :P

EDIT: The manga is alright, but it's a prime example of http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AdaptationDecay

I hate it when you're really into a manga, and you read like 1-16, but its not for a month when the next one comes out. Too bad you forgot the story and where you left off!!

Ichigo 100% comes to mind... B.O.D.Y, furuba, so many i lost track of.

So I just finished watching all 26 episodes of Cowboy Bebop overnight. I've got to say, it's a really great series. I had no complaints at all about it until the ending. Man, I did not like the ending one bit.

Spoiler
Spike did not have to die! There was no reason for it! Sure, he was badly cut up, but this guy survived a fall out of a building a few stories tall, and after getting sliced up and shot beforehand no less! And after he defeated Vicious, he became the new leader. As leader, he could have just walked right out and never come back! But instead he just dies? What the hell!?

I hate it when characters die for no reason like that. What a terrible way to end an otherwise amazing series.

That really left a bad taste in my mouth. How did everyone else feel about the ending?

Spoiler
Probably should pay more attention to the series. From episode 1, Spike considers himself to have died since leaving the Red Dragons (or rather, specifically, when Julia never showed up to meet him). He largely acts as though he's living on borrowed time, and the last episodes in particular strongly hint that it's almost up. Really, with all the leadup, just having Spike successfully walk away would have killed the drama and have been anticlimatic.

Anyway, loved the ending, wouldn't change it at all.

I should pay more attention? Gee, thanks for the advice. How silly of me to have only payed attention to the explosions and gunfights.

Anyway:

Spoiler
I payed attention just fine, thank you, and was well aware of all of that, however he still died in a ridiculous and unnecessary way. After all of the insane things he survived, he dies in a sword fight that gave him injuries that, if it were any other situation, he would have just shrugged off. Yet he dies anyway. I don't mind deaths that actually make sense, but this simply didn't, especially when compared to what he survived in the rest of the series. The ending may have been anti-climactic if he didn't die, but they could have at the very least made the actual cause of his death seem plausible.

Spoiler
Being sliced in the stomach, with all that soft, squishy flesh, and vulnerable organs isn't a plausible way to die?

My memory may be wrong but

Spoiler
I don't think it's ever really confirmed that he died although the indications that he died are strong. Still I'm pretty sure it was just left open ended for you, the viewer, to decide if he died or not.
