Unofficial Anime Thread VIII

Can anyone recommend any anime similar to Planetes? Somehting with a more grounded, less "epic" sort of feel?

Also, this is mostly aimed at Defron, I guess: Where do you order your figures from? Specific website you use, or do you have to kinda shop all over?
I really like deathnote. I used to like animes like Naruto and stuff but I kind of started not liking them because of the sillyness. Deathnote is the only anime I know of that has no chibi, furries or anything like that. It actually takes itself seriously i mean sure Ryuk has his comedic relief moments but most of the time hes really creepy. I was reccomended that if I liked Deathnote then I should try watching ergo proxy. Any merit to that?

I absolutely love ergo proxy. It can be surrealistic and makes a couple odd jumps between episodes that may not be especially clear at first, but I'd definitely give it a go.

I didn't like Occult Academy

Oh you, you're just awful. Occult Academy was awesome until episode 11. That just made me "WTF?!".

Ugh the main character just bothered me

I can't stand it when everything bad that can happen to the main character does and it's just a constant abuse the main character gag throughout the series

Exactly why I hate Ben Stiller since it seems those are the majority of roles he plays in

What genre are we talking here? You'll find plenty that is grounded (interesting choice of words for Planetes :P) in the slice-of-life genre.

Also, this is mostly aimed at Defron, I guess: Where do you order your figures from? Specific website you use, or do you have to kinda shop all over?

Lately I've been favoring Hobby Search, mainly because of their reward point policy makes me feel like I have money just sitting on my account, but I use a wide variety of services

Here is the full list of services I have used:

http://www.hlj.com/index.html - Expensive, but extremely fast shipping
http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/main/ - Best US anime retailer
http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/ - Like hlj, just different people
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-00-71-d-49-en.html - Often the cheapest, but very slow shipping
http://www.yesasia.com/us/en/home.html - Faster shipping than Play-asia
http://www.kidnemo.com/ - Another cheapy. Not nearly as full-featured as hlj or Hobby Search and is a little more hit-or-miss as to whether they get your item in stock, but their prices often cannot be beat.
http://toylet.net/index.html - Decent price, decent shipping
http://www.jbox.com/ - Fairly speedy, nice all-around
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/index.html - great resource for CDs, prices not all that inflated.
http://www.toyslogic.com/ - nice selection, but usually prefer to use other sites if possible
http://www.animesekai.com/ - Sometimes have stuff in stock that is sold out elsewhere, otherwise I don't like it much
http://www.animecastle.com/default.aspx - Nice site, usually get good deals.
http://www.animenation.com/ - US oriented. They are behind rentanime.com (think rentanime.com is US-only)
http://www.hobbyfan.com/ - Very good selection of figurines, including garage kits (DIY ones)
http://www.shoppingmalljapan.com/ - Wonderful site for placing bids on Yahoo Japan Auctions and from randomjapanesesite. Very reliable, though uncertain about their stance on non-US customers (I've heard good things lately about http://yokattaweb.jp/, but have not used it personally yet. Inertia keeps me with SMJ)
http://www.amazon.co.jp/ - Very limited in what you can buy, but you get it direct, so price inflation is almost non-existant (use the "In English" button in the top-right corner)
ebay
Amazon

And a few others, as well as two local stores

It is indeed a great series. I always miss buying it because it is always under the FUNimation sales when I expect it to be under Geneon, and Geneon sales when I expect it to be under FUNimation :swear:

I guess by grounded I mean not super massive robots that combine together into galaxy sized behemoths or fantastical demon spawns and mythical creatures. Planetes was about the future, but it was very subdued. It felt more like 2001 or Moon. Not quite even Firefly level of technology. They seemed to come at the series from more of a realist perspective rather than just throwing in the coolest things they could think of.

So back to my point: I'm looking for some more scifi that isn't so over the top. I'm thinking pickings might be slim. :/ A friend recommended Texhnolyze when we were talking about Ergo Proxy. Made it sound sort of Blade Runner-esque. Though he said it was very slow paced.

I'd check out Aria, It's got a bit of sci-fi going for it, but deals with the day-to-day life of the people living on Mars (now called Aqua) in the 24th century, though it may not have enough hard sci-fi for you liking, more fantasy-esque. Stunning artwork

Edit: realized Voices of a Distant Star might work too. Though it does have to do with a war with mechs, it centers on the relationship of one person fighting it and the other person on Earth, and the effects of distance on their ability to communicate

Edit 2: http://www.crunchyroll.com/time-of-eve is another that may have what you are looking for. Has to do with ethics in a world with androids.

For reasons unknown, I have returned to these forums after... a very, very, very long hiatus. I wonder if I am remembered.

Anyway, since I left, the only new series that I've watches is Ouran High School Host Club. That was a damn good show.

If only you were here a while ago, I saw a Kagura and Sakaki figurine. I wanted to tell you to get one, but you weren't here :(

That's not an answer. (Wait, yeah it is...)

And were you the one that recommended me Ouran? Because, if so, thank you. The last episode was probably the most badass thing that I have ever seen.

Also, have any of you (A) seen Haruhi Suzumiya, (B) seen Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, and © will read fanfiction? I have a crossover fanfic that I'd like some creative consulting for.

A - Yes. Have it on DVD, plan on buying the second season soon (even with endless eight...)

B - Not seen all of it yet.

C - I believe I told you before, I don't do fanfics.

Actually, I already have two figurines. One's of Ryoko Asakura, and one's of Yuki Nagato. (And while there's a hand custom made for knife-grabbing, recreating the knife-grabbing scene is impossible due to weight)

And it's been a freaking year since we last spoke. I've forgot everything anyone's said.

Wha? You're no longer the dub-loving, Azumanga-obsessed guy I remember you being? I may have to change your nickname from Thnikkan to something else :P

I still love dubs (except for the Higurashi dub. Karen Strassman aside, it's crap. Seriously, BANDAI, you're dubbing it, put some star power behind it! At least let Michelle Ruff voice Rika...).

Azumanga-loving, not quite as much. More of a Higurashi guy and a Haruhi guy in equal measures.

Wellp. I finished Chrono Crusade three months back.

Almost done with Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood (finished the original a month back).

Can I get some recommendations for great animes that are kind of like these character development wise?

So what do you guys think of Funimation? I found a box set of the Slayers seasons on Amazon for a decent price, but I'm leery of going with a company I'm not familiar with. How are their translations?

I don't want to end up with another disaster like the Hellsing manga I got from Dark Horse. :meh:

Funimation is quite good, if the Ouran dub is anything to go by. Very, very enjoyable. Note, though, that they dub the OP and the ED.

Silly Thnikkan, Steampunk cares not for dubs.

FUNimation is good. They drop honorifics, but otherwise are good, even including slang like moe. *remembers the sea of moe scene from Ouran High*

Because usually an anime is only licensed for DVD release by one company?

Pretty much all DVD anime has the original audio on it. A simple switch in the menu changes it to Japanese.

I assume it's a dual audio release, so you have the option of watching it dubbed or subbed.
