Unofficial Anime Thread VIII

You could watch some other Gundam series. I think Gundam 00 is very good, and the dub is well done. I watched a few episodes subbed a while back, but I can't recall what it sounded like. G Gundam isn't bad either, just has incredibly outlandish dialogue sometimes.

Code Geass is excellent. Easily one of the best animes I've ever seen. A few (2 or 3) pointless high school antics episodes, but those can be skipped without missing much at all.

I thought the high school episodes of Geass really helped to break up the series, especially the cat stealing the helmet. They were good for showcasing what could happen if Lelouch and Suzaku worked together but in a light hearted way.

Edit: Been looking into a couple of sci-fi animes, but I've been put off by the inclusuion of CG. Blassreiter was the main one I was looking forward to seeing.

*Noob Alert*
Hey, I really like Gundam Wing, and in general I like Mech's and sci-fi. Possibly my favorite thing is Sci-fi. So can anybody recommend a good sci-fi, and/or mech anime, but with one little pet peeve. I can't stand high pitched voices. I was watching trailers for other Gundam series, and most of the voice actors had voices that sounded like 9 year olds. And honestly, it hurts my ears. It's ok when its from side characters, but not the main character. More mature anime I guess you could say.

Bottom Line, I'm looking for a mature sci-fi or mech anime that the main character(s)' voice isn't a high pitched one.

Full Metal Panic! possibly.(Be sure to check out FMP: Fumoffu too after it.)

Are you going to be watching it subbed or dubbed?

Dialog isn't the only thing that's outlandish about G Gundam. I'd say it's basically Dragon Ball except with giant robots, but I don't recall anyone ever taking a full episode just to power up, so I don't think the comparison fits. The series also has a fair amount of shouting, though its more of the hot blooded and manly sort rather than the screaming kids sort.

No no, that'd be Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. But it does the formula so right. Because literally, the more manly you act and the more yelling you do, the more powerful your mech gets.

I dunno, there's an awful lot of screaming from both Shinji and Asuka. His scream in End of Evangelion nearly made my head explode the first time I was unfortunate enough to watch it with the volume up.

This is going by the English voice track, never bothered to watch it in Japanese.

Shinji's voice isn't that high pitched though, and it meets his other criteria (sci-fi, mech, mature).

Also, while we're on the subject, anybody know the release date for Evangelion 2.22 on BD (in the USA)?

Somebody else recommended Code Geass, I'll have to see if that person actually has it, then borrow it from them lol.

Are you watching this with the original Japanese voices or the English voices? One set may be high for a series, and the other not, so it is a fairly important question.

Well. I was watching everything in English voices. Maybe that's the problem  Gundam Wing, I thought anyways, was really good with English voices. Everybody had very distinct voices, which I really liked.

Thanks all for all the replies, I'll look into as many of these as I can.

People are always putting down the dubbed series, but there are many series that are done well. Unfortunately, companies tend to reuse the same voice actors and it's very noticeable sometimes. If you've seen Bleach, then you'll recognize that the main character in Code Geass is the same voice actor. In Gundam 00, one of the characters is voiced by the guy who did Inuyasha's voice, so if you've had the misfortune to watch that you'll be stuck thinking "KAGOME!!!!" every once in a while. :hehe:

The guy that does Edward Elric's voice in FMA is everywhere. I'm not sure there's a dub in existence that you can't find him in somewhere. Other than that I really don't mind dubs, and in most cases prefer them.

It's not that companies want to reuse the same voice actors for their characters, but that that is all the market produces. Dubs are insanely expensive (we've been seeing more and more licensors opt-out of dubs because of the rising costs of them), and the money to aquire voice actors is limited. Many English voice actors are not willing to work for the prices anime licensors can afford, and many American voice actors have contracts with American animation studios which prohibits them from working with other companies, making the pool that anime licensors have to draw from even smaller. Hence it is often the same small pool for each licensor, as that is all that exists in the market.

Japan, on the other hand, has a huge seiyuu market. Dubbing foreign films (due to a very small film production internally) is huge, seiyuu are a dime a dozen. The market is so saturated over there that few seiyuu are full-time seiyuu and have side-jobs, hoping to make it big (think of it like the American actor market - every waitress in LA is an actor). This does two things: drastically lowers the cost of hiring a seiyuu (barring the big-name seiyuu) and creating a huge pool to draw from.

Which is one of the reasons I prefer subbed to English dubbed. More diversity and more talent (no offense to English dubbers, but for the most part the anime voice actor market is bottom-of-the-barrel for English voice acting that couldn't make it doing anything else). I actually remember reading an economic article on the costs and tradeoffs of dubbing anime, and how the market is, for a significant amount, beyond the need to dub, and often dubbing can be detrimental to profit, and therefore their ability to license new titles, which is where the money is at. FUNimation is the only major licensor left to not release a series as subbed-only AFAIK, some groups (Nozomi) have virtually completely done away with English dubs.

The fact that anime localizations are moving away from dubbing makes me hope games do the same. The only company I know of that regularly includes the option to use the Japanese voices is Nippon Ichii.

Endless streams of tears. At least half a tissue box worth

To not cry during Clannad means you have no soul :stare:

oh, great, i have no soul, again apparently...

And to continue on with the current discussion, dubbing is a hit or miss, most times if the match the correct characters with the voices it can be quite enjoyable, such as outlaw star, which was pure gold subbed and dubbed, while others......

And why does code geass appeal to so many people, the art to me is horrible, espically the human models, they all looked like they where underfed, and not to sound picky or something, if i cant stand to look at anything other than the subtitles i dont watch it.

I didn't really like Code Geass either. I've only seen 2 or 3 episodes but didn't find it that amazing.

I loved Code Geass, though it's difficult to pin down a specific reason why. I think what first appealed to me with the concept of "Britannia," as I absolutely love empires and tyrannical goverments in fiction. Then I got drawn in by the story, which I thought was pretty good. I also liked how it was relatively serious. I had just come off of Death Note at the time and found Code Geass to have a nice balance between mostly being serious, but still having the occasional silly moments. I also liked how Geass was handled as a plot device. Overall I just really liked it, and I have few complaints about it other than a few nitpicks here and there.

Hurray Hulu put up the subbed version of Claymore

Don't get me wrong I don't have anything against dubs I just don't have the easiest time making out everything that is said (poor hearing)

I did watch the first few episodes of Claymore a while back but didn't finish the whole series

I think I will despite what I've heard about the bad ending

I prefer subs a lot more than dubs mostly because I think the voice acting is better and it's easier to follow. I also like that when subbed, an anime probably would keep most of it's original puns and jokes. That's just me though, since I understand the jokes usually.

ALSO! Does anyone know when FLCL is supposed to be released on Blu Ray? I know that Funimation said they will release it sometime in 2010, so is it going to come out before Christmas?

Updated OP with Fall 2010 simulcats. Spring 2010 simulcasts removed.

Unofficial rule of the anime thread is now that everyone must watch Oreimo (Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai -- My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute) :P

It's a funny show. This guy finds out his little sister is a closet otaku and an imouto-con

Spoiler

She then forces him to play an eroge she just bought for an "objective opinion"

She has an impressive collection, I'm almost jealous of it :P

The series probably isn't what you are thinking. Don't want to spoil it, though, so just watch it ;)

This morning I woke up and found that *gasp* our electricity was out :(

So I ate breakfast and did some of my normal chores then went back to my room

Instead of watching tv (which was impossible to do given the circumstances) I decided that now would be the perfect time to catch up on some Fairy Tail manga I hadn't read yet. Just as I opened it up and read past the first page the power turned back on.

So instead of reading Fairy Tail I watched Dragon Ball Z Kai and Yu Gi Oh (classic Yu Gi Oh not that 5D's crap or whatever)

Dude, me too. Yu-Gi-Oh was the episode where Joey loses R. Eyes B. Dragon, DBZ Kai was Saiyains arriving at Earth (and freaking filler, how I hate it).

I watch 5Ds, but only because it is Yu-Gi-Oh. I don't particularly like the themes of the show (Synchros and Motorcycles) but the characters fit most of the trends of the old show, so it isn't that bad.

Anyone know where I could buy Anime fairly cheap (full seasons or by the episode, doesn't matter)? In particular I'm looking for Inuyasha (never watched before but a friend has got me interested).

Not exactly anime related, but I figure this thread is filled with enough otaku to answer this:

I want to find out of there's a hobby shop/import shop with Japanese merchandise near me. How would I go about looking for one? (besides driving around aimlessly searching for a needle in a haystack)

Anyone know where I could buy Anime fairly cheap (full seasons or by the episode, doesn't matter)? In particular I'm looking for Inuyasha (never watched before but a friend has got me interested).

Inuyasha is classified as a "shounen anime", which (usually) means it clocks in at over 100 episodes. Inuyasha itself is 167 episodes spread out over 6 seasons. Now as for the price, we're talking around $30-$50 per season (on amazon.com, someone may have a better place), so it's not exactly a "cheap" investment.

That's why I like series with 26 or less episodes. It all fits onto one boxset and the storyline usually has a good plot without dragging on with endless filler episodes.

Finished up Saki today at school, I forgot how bold Momo was at the end (those who've seen the show know what I am talking about, the rest of you: watch if you want to find out). Need second season NAO!

I remember vaguely seeing a chart listing all the characters and their mahjong play. I remember in particular Kaori had an insane +/-

If anyone knows the chart I am talking about and could link it to me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Gotta figure out what anime to watch during my down-time at school now. Can't be something new as I only watch new anime under more quiet and apt situations than the noisy, bright, and bustley middle of the day in the Student Union.

If you have a local conventions, there is a good chance that any local shops will be there advertising. Any local anime club can also probably point you in the right direction. Beyond that googling/using yellow pages-like sites

According to http://twitter.com/#!/funimation, we can expect FLCL around February. Apologies if it's old news, but it's the first I've seen since their "late 2010" estimation.

Want Koromo to win so bad, how could anyone possibly vote against The Koromo? Last year was rigged so bad with Koromo facing Yui, and I can't believe dumb Nodoka made it into the quarterfinals again

Also, isn't Oreimo un-licensed? Are we now allowed to talk about those?

Been watching Birdy the Mighty: Decode on Hulu these days. Can't say I enjoy the streaming experience, but the show is nice. It's got much more character development than the original 4 episode OVA of Birdy the Mighty, but at the same time it feels like it's lacking something. Kind of like they spread the original plot a little too thin.

Still, I enjoy it immensely. Especially the action scenes.

Yeah, she deserves to win after the unfair loss last year.

Edit: It'd be better if she was in her uber-cute outfit, but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN7lGKuJWZU

Also, isn't Oreimo un-licensed? Are we now allowed to talk about those?

Aniplex and Anime News Network still officially hold the license for Oreimo, but http://www.anhymanwsnetwork.com/news/2010-10-09/oreimo-episode-2-leaked-1-day-before-japanese-debut. Neither Aniplex nor ANN have officially said the license has been pulled, so until they do, I plan on leaving the link there -- ANN is still hosting the preview, after all.

Maybe it is just a bit of wishful thinking, but I think it'll all be settled by the end of next week.

:cold:  :cold:  :cold: Koromo lost. Stupid fake voters stuffed the ballot. No way is the results 2149 votes real. Koromo sooooo deserved to win :(

Edit: more bad news: http://www.anhymanwsnetwork.com/oreimo-apology. The link is removed from the OP, and no further discussion of the series will be permitted here.

Just a bad day in the anime world today, I guess. Episode one was quite good. Hopefully Aniplex USA will cut a deal with crunchyroll or Section23, but until such an announcement:

Any further discussion of episodes of Oreimo is prohibited, and any such discussion will be properly reported as admission of copyright infringement

The topic of ANN's behavior during this incident, however, is open for discussion, if anyone cares to share their opinion of it. I personally am glad to see ANN giving their official statement as fast as possible (Monday was a holiday in Japan, and the head of ANN was in Japan trying to work this out the past two days). I hope this doesn't hurt them too badly.

The situation is fully resolved and ANN is once again playing episodes
