Unofficial Anime Thread VIII

Post » Fri Dec 24, 2010 9:41 am

Welcome to the return of the anime thread. After a long break, we have been granted another chance to discuss anime in a centralized manner. Let's not ruin it and show them that their trust is well placed. Now for the rules. There are many new ones, so make sure you read them carefully:

1. This is for the discussion of all things anime and manga. Naturally this allows for discussion of related topics, but discussion is primarily about Japanese animation and manga. If you are not a fan of it, then this is not the place for you.

2. Be courteous of others and use spoiler tags when appropriate. This applies to all content both old and new.

3. Only anime/manga legally available in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand are allowed to be discussed.

4. Discussion of episodes/chapters that have yet to be released in these regions is strictly forbidden

5. Discussion of imported Asian DVDs is forbidden due to it being impossible to differentiate between someone importing a DVD and illegally downloading.

6. Discussing or requesting where you can download anime/manga is completely forbidden. This is illegal and clearly against the forum rules. There are some stores that legitimately sell anime online, such as iTunes and Funimation's Download-to-Own, and you may mention these services in the thread.

7. Discussing/Linking to episodes uploaded to Youtube (and other user-uploaded video sites) by persons other than official license holders is completely forbidden. This too is against forum rules.

8. Content unsuitable for minors is forbidden. This being a PG-13 forum, such content is not allowed. This applies to images and other linked content: no nudity and no extreme violence/gore. Discussion of these more "mature" series is ok, just don't link to any images of the more mature content. And obviously no pormography, discussion or linked content.

9. All forum rules are in effect (ie: no trolling, flamebaiting, etc)

10. Please report any offenses when you see them.

11. Anything anyone is uncertain about should be asked via PM prior to posting.

subtitle from Shakugan no Shana, it's her "catch-phrase" if you will.

Suddenly though I have a strong desire to rewatch Kiddy Grade. I hate when that happens after just starting to watch something else. I almost used "Mirai he nagareteku ima wo kagayakesete" as the subtitle, from Kiddy Grade's OP and means "Let what is now shine on, as it drifts into the future". I will probably start watching Kiddy Grade tomorrow, once again putting off finishing Shakugan no Shana. I love Shakugan no Shana, but every time I start watching it I suddenly want to watch something else. In general it is happening a lot whenever I start watching a new show.

Anyone else have this problem, where they go back to rewatching something instead of finishing off what they are currently watching? There is just too much anime and not enough time :(

And my FREEing figurine is in customs right now, almost here ^_^

Oddly enough Kiddy Grade case 4 has been sitting atop my DVD player for several months. It wasn't anime that pulled me away from it though, nor was it new to me, but since then I have re-watched several things including Shakugan no Shana.

Now I am currently half way through Wolfs Rain and want to go back to Kiddy Grade.

Hey, how does anyone think a Cthulhu in anime form would look? I am gonna draw it on my new tablet, but I have absolutely no idea what it would look like.

:o MC Akio avatar!?

With all this talk about Evangelion in the threads I decided to watch the series. I only ever remember the first episode and parts of the series (I mainly remember the first episode because I watched it on Cartoon Network a while back)

So far it's pretty good and since I don't remember a majority of the series it's like watching an all new series

Depends on the artist. If He was say, drawn by...whoever drew Hello Kitty, it would look kinda' like http://www.hello-cthulhu.com/. If it was some other cutesy artist, He might look like http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&q=happy+cthulhu#/dwpot7. And Cthy was drawn by Kentaro Miura, well...no direct examples of that, but there is http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/894/miura.jpg

Yo, yo! I'm MC Akio!

also, watch it. I loved it.

and @Xetirox: I was actually thinking of a human anime girl that sort of represented Cthulhu. Maybe like her hair could look like tentacles or something.

I was about to say that that's a h-doujinshi just waiting to happen, I then remembered this is japan we're talking about and so it most likely already has happened.

'Tis a Shojo manga/anime as far as i'm aware.

Japanese girls seem to like shipping male characters together, making them effeminate makes it easier for them.

Soooo happy ^_^

at 18-19'' tall, it is too big for my display case, though. I am going to leave it in the plastic until I can get a glass case for her. If anyone knows of a single-container that has that much clearance, please do tell me.

Indeed. Ouran high is just shoujo. Really the only characters of questionable straightness would be the twins IMO, though, that later becomes quite obvious to be just a show when it turns out that they have romantic feelings for Haruhi

Well, there is also the Zaku club, they are all yuri. Besides them, though, everyone is straight I am pretty certain.

Not technically an anime question, but close enough. I wanted to get the Berserk manga, but I'm not sure what a good place to buy it from would be. I've never bought any sort of comic book, other than a few issues of Shonen Jump (which was rather confusing, since all of it was in the middle of their runs). Looking at Amazon, each volume is ~10-12 bucks, and with over 30 volumes that would be a considerable investment. Is there any other manga that might be cheaper and good for an introduction to it? Something short would be ideal, nothing like One Piece or Bleach that goes on forever and ever and ever and ever...

1. check locally for small niche stores. Usually you can build a good relationship with them and they will give you discounts for being a regular customer

2. Use Rightstuf.com and wait for a sale. That usually makes items off 40% the MSRP, more if you are a got anime member (so for Berserk, that is $9 a volume during Dark Horse sales, order 6 volumes and you get free shipping).

3. At the end of the day, Manga is expensive. You just gotta keep an eye out for the the good deals. Look for book stores closing, etc. It hurts less to buy it a little at a time.

I've been reading the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya manga series recently since number 6 came out. Enjoying it so far. I also got the Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya novel, but reading through the novels, I've been wondering about the accuracy of the translation. I mean, the novels seems slightly stilted in terms of writing style. I can't read Japanese, so I can't possibly comment on this (Despite me doing just that) but it has made me think whether the translation was looking to be as close to the source as possible in terms of literal words, or to the spirit of it. Reading 'Le Ton Beau De Marot' by Douglas Hofstadter hasn't helped at all. :P (It's about translating poems/novels, and is worth picking up)

I don't really know.

In other news, I plan to watch Clannad tomorrow since I've heard generally good things about it, and it's by KyoAni whose anime I love. I'll probably need some recommendations for later on though... Hm.

Finished watching Evangelion today

Probably one of the most wtf endings of an anime I've ever seen

I mean I expected it from Serial Experiments Lain but Evangelions weirdness just kind of came out of left field

Had to read the wiki to even get any sort of understanding out of the ending

Ah well still a decent series up until the last two episodes anyway

Don't forget to watch Clannad After Story after you watch the original Clannad! Also, be prepared for tears.

Endless streams of tears. At least half a tissue box worth

To not cry during Clannad means you have no soul :stare:

Well, on one hand, it's possible they ran out of money at the end.

On the other, Gainax does this crap all the time.

The old movies ("Death & Rebirth" and "The End of Evangelion") are basically a remake of the last 2 episodes and a more understandable ending.

Don't think anyone still really understood them without help anyway. I don't even know if I like them 10 years after having watched them for the first time.
