What's Star Trek Online like? Any good? What are the cool parts? What are the crap part? Are there any parts that make you smile? Do you like long walks by the beach?

I dont know wether i even want to touch this game. Just Cause was one of the worst games ive ever played, it was definitely up there with Big Rigs. If theyve changed everything about it, then it might be good. I just dont know.

The first one actually made me feel sick.

Seriously? Just Cause wasn't a great game, but it really wasn't as bad as you say IMO. The graphics were quite nice, it was varied, the grappling hook mechanic was fairly original (albeit improved upon massively in the second one), the setting was pretty original too. The voice acting and story were bad, and the gameplay wasn't quite perfected, but it's miles from the worst game ever.

Ive played Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale. I hated the first baldurs gate. The walking speed was way too slow, you spent half the time walking through empty space and some of the characters are annoying (especially Imoen and the dude with the f***ing hamster!), the game makes you fight against high level assassins basically forcing you to use a ranged weapon character.

icewind dale on the other hand seems to adress all those issues, the characters walk faster, you can pick an entire party so you can vary the classes. The areas are much more concise and have much more content in them, not as much empty space. Its much more combat centric but the combat is a lot more fun, it is a challening game but it doesn't seem as unfair. Also you can access your inventory while paused and gain health by resting. the removal of these things make the game much more enjoyable then BG imo, id recommend it 1000 times over. The storyline is much less invasive, it doesnt force a hero's tale with moral choices down your throat. The story is pretty straightfoward, your characters motives are all up to your imagination. While some see this as a downside, i love it! gone are the annoying one liners, lame characters and sappy relationship stuff that Baldur's gate had. I wish Bioware made more games like this.

I'm going to pick them up in about an hour! :D

What site do I go to in order to download patches? Are there any unofficial/community patches and/or content? I'm running Windows XP 64-bit, do I need a patch?

BG worked perfectly fine for me on Windows 7 64-bit, so I don't imagine you'll have much trouble with XP.

Also, allow me to second, third, and fourth povuloho's recommendation for Tutu. I used a slightly more simplified version of it, myself (easyTutu), but I'd recommend either--especially since a lot of BG mods these days simply assume you're running the first game through a version of Tutu. http://forums.gibberlings3.net/index.php?showtopic=8122 has a good guide for what to install when where Tutu and other mods are concerned. Also, I recommend the http://www.gibberlings3.net/bg1npc/--it adds a number of BG2 style banters and occasional sidequests, which are otherwise lacking for BG1. They're all very well written in regards to keeping things in-character and in-lore, and some of the interactions between party members are absolutely priceless.

I'm trying to remember what mods I had for BG2...I think I kept it pretty vanilla, with just the Baldurdash fixpacks and http://www.pocketplane.net/mambo/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=101&Itemid=80 (adds some cut content back into the game).

the game makes you fight against high level assassins basically forcing you to use a ranged weapon character.

BG1 is not Oblivion--it's not even Morrowind. There is no level-scaling, and it is not interested in coddling you. You will probably struggle in the early portions of the game. It is, however, entirely possible to play the game with a spellcaster character (been there, done that, t-shirt purchased), or a melee fighter...just a matter of getting the right party together and figuring out what works for you. Personally, I find winning a fight against assassins ten or twelve levels higher than me in BG1 to be far more rewarding than an evenly matched (level-wise) fight in Oblivion.

As for characters you find annoying...that's the beauty of Baldur's Gate: there's enough NPC variety to pick whatever party you want. You aren't married to Imoen and Minsc (that'd be the guy with the hamster--true, he's the best tank in the entire game in addition to being comedy gold, but there are other tank characters). If you find them all annoying, well--that's your problem, then. :P

Im thinkin about getting Alan wake.

Is it long?
Is the story gripping?
Are there any DLCs coming out for it?

Ive already heard that the combat is kinda repetitive but thats okay if theres a good story to keep me going.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2, if you use the third person cheat :P

Other people, is PROTOTYPE good? I like the idea and some of the free roam looks good, but it doesn't look like it controls very well, and the graphics look pretty poor as well.

I'm actually also using easyTutu, so that would be a good idea to get indeed.

I think the BG1NPC project, which is awesome, requires it too.

I just beat it a week or so ago. It is really a great game. I was surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did. It has a really gripping story and I jumped a few times when the "taken" would lunge out of the darkness right next to you, or when a axe would come flying out of the dark and nail you in the back. It made for some intense moments. The combat was fun and pretty unique as you must burn the darkness off of enemies with your flashlight before you can finish them off, sounds repetitive but its really not.

I would defiantly recommend renting it. There isn't much replay value unfortunately. However, they are releasing a new "episode" in July that follows the end of the game. Considering what happens at the end i am pretty interested as to what the new installment will reveal. The 6 levels are broken down into episodes which play out like TV series sorta. One of my only complaints was i thought some of the cut scenes were lacking graphics wise, sometimes they just weren't pretty. Its a small complaint however, i was just expecting more polishing because they worked on the game for like 5 years. Anyway hope this helped. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys thriller/horror style games. I give it a high 8 maybe 9.

I really thought it was that bad.
The controls we're clunky, the camera was awkwardly positioned making any sort of action difficult, the controls for vehicles were clunky and counter-intuitive. I actually got travel sick from playing it (and travel sickness isnt something i generally suffer from, apart from on boats during pretty serious storms). As you said, voice acting and story were bad. I actually thought the graphics werent too good either compared to other games released that year. Really didnt have a lot going for it, and i dont see how the setting is particularly original?

Its not often that i completely cast a game aside, but Just Cause got that treatment.

It wasn't set in an alternate version of an American city, unlike GTA, Saints Row, Prototype etc. Not many games set on a caribbean island.

It's around 8-10 hours long. I enjoyed the story and found the game a lot of fun to play. There is DLC coming out for it in the form of extra episodes (the game is split into episodes like a TV show), one of which is due out pretty soon this month. I didn't find the combat all that repetitive personally, but I can see how some people might find that.

It's definitely a good game, but I don't think it's 5 years worth of good game. I wouldn't buy it full price, but I'd highly recommend renting it or getting it when the price goes down a bit.

It's without question the worst game I've played from this generation. No matter how much I tweaked the sensitivity of the controls, it just did not handle well at all. The story is also presented horribly and the visuals are distinctly average and bland. Also, it's a game built around co-op, and there is no online co-op. Seriously, what's that all about?

Noted. Thanks, Melvar.

Yeah, a friend sent me the Dog Days trailer. I would link it... But it's kinda too graphic for this forum.

Yes, excellent game and totally worth $5. What platform? Works well with mouse & keyboard, but I preferred using a game pad (I've played through it twice, once with mouse & keyboard, the other with a game controller).

Very smooth and polished gameplay, nice graphics, etc. It is very light on "strategy" which I found to be great, since I svck at strategy games (as in, having to micromanage troops and stuff). There are tactical elements, however. There are "good evil" and "evil evil" decisions, though you can certainly just do whatever the heck you want and not keep track of it. It's somewhat linear, but also a a bit free-roaming (some quests don't need to happen in any particular order), but you can (and will need to) revisit previous areas. There's also an element of puzzle-solving involved, which makes the game a fun balance between combat, explorations, pillaging, and puzzle-solving with Minions.

Once the game ends, it ends. However, you can load your last save and just have fun killing things and upgrading your armor. There's an expansion pack, Raising Hell, that is pretty good, too. However, if you are the PC, last I checked (about 5 or more months ago) the expansion wasn't compatible with the latest patch for the regular game. Maybe they fixed it, I'm not sure. The expansion pack adds on new areas to explore, and sets up the scenario for the next game.

I've heard the Minion system compared to the things in Pikmin, but I've never played that game.

Red Dead Redemption is an excellent game. The story will last you somewhere in the region of 15-20 hours, and you'll get much more playtime out of it from all the other challenges and exploration and whatnot, not to mention online play if you are that way inclined. I'd definitely recommend it.

Splinter Cell: Conviction is apparently very short (roughly 6 hours I've heard) so I'd be wary of that if you are getting it as purely a single player game. There is a co-operative mode that is supposed to be quite good though, and I think there is competitive multiplayer too (although I'm not certain about that). I don't really know much else about the game other than that though.

I haven't played or read much about Peacewalker, so I can't comment on that.

Pretty late answer, but i have it for PC. It is pretty fun, and controls are just fine, though they propably work better for a controller. However it has serious performance problems, and since it's an Activision SP only game, it won't be patched. Worth a to buy at bargain bin, or used. Personally i would say Red Faction Guerilla is a better free roam third person shooter.
