Unofficial "Is [insert game here] any good?"

Post » Sun May 09, 2010 2:40 pm

Thinking about getting a game, but not sure if it'll be any good? Ask away!

For those replying: please explain why you did or didn't like a game; constructive feedback is more informative than a simple "this game was awesome" or "that game was awful."

For those asking: it helps to know what sort of game aspects turn you on or off, and what you already know about the game you are interested in. It's hard to address "is [game] good?" if we aren't sure what you like and don't like, and whether or not you know the basic info about the game (genre, plot premise).

http://www.metacritic.com/games/ <- useful insofar as you get a large sample of "professional" opinions, as well as many thoughtful and insightful user comments/ratings. Will not guarantee that you will love or hate a game you are considering purchasing/playing. Sometimes contains useful info about game problems that you can ask us here about (i.e. "I read [game] has a ton of bugs/has long loading times, are they really horribly buggy/long?").

--------------
Do any of these games svck/have hideous bugs? I know the basic premise of the game, and I think I know the genre/gameplay style, but I don't know if the game is actually any good. I like games that have a strong story/character development, and I tend to stay away from games that are mindless combat/hack-and-slash (even if they are addictive hack-and-slash).

Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption (I have Bloodlines)
Severance: Blade of Darkness (sometimes seen without the title "Severance")
Stonekeep
Shadowcaster
Wizards & Warriors
Anachronox

Portal Runner (PS2)
Money Python's Looney Bin
Wizardry 8
Darkened Skye
Enclave
Hellboy: Asylum Seeker (PS1)
Beyond Divinity
I of the Dragon
Scrapland, aka American McGee Presents Scrapland
Sacred Rings
Keepsake
Dream Chronicles
Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches
Amerzone
Blazing Dragons (PS1)
Danger Girl (PS1)
Juggernaut (PS1)
Shadow Madness (PS1)

From what I heard Shadow Madness plays like an american JRPG....

Only thing I remember about Darkened Skye is the skittles game?

Fairy Tale fights is one of the most mindless hack-n-slash games I've played. The demo is fun the first couple times, and I'm sure the full game is "better" (it has 4 player co-op), but whatever price it's listed at now, it's not worth it.

Never liked Darkened Skye much personally, but that's at least in part because it's not really my prefered type of gameplay. What I got of it was a fairly typical action-adventure.
Amerzone is wonderfully atmospheric. A bit easy and somewhat short, though.

I heard it plays like Dark Clouds with some repetitiveness.

I want to know if you walk around the table to see what angle the ball needs to be hit to go in?
(Don't really know how ask this question better)
Does the game have the auto-aim and if yes is it turnable off and on? I found out it does but can it be turned off?

I played for a month. It is very dull and boring. Space is kind of fun for the first thirty minutes and ground fighting just plain svcks. Some of the player faces look too funny. I sometimes enjoy long walk by the beach :o

Try Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for the PsP. I don't really know how to explain it all I can say is you need a good memory and quick reflexes to dodge and attack. Be sure to check youtube videos of it. If you do like it you may want to wait till I believe April the 20th that's when the newest one comes out for the wii.

*edit*
Or you could dip your hand into WoW in my opinion it's fun for a little while but gets boring once you hit the max level.

System Shock II is an awesome game. There are probably cheats and you will pee your pants if you get scared easily.

Wizardry 8 is OK. It's very hard and I dislike how the random encounters are handled. Loads better than the random encounters in Dark Savant though since you can see them in advance here.

System Shock 2 (I get scared easily - will I pee my pants? Are there cheats?)

The game is not so much horror in the way of cheap scare tricks, but the atmosphere is pretty tense. You never know when an enemy may appear again even if you've cleared a sector. All the menu based actions (using items, buying items, healing/hacking/repairing/modifying/researching) all happen in real time, so if you're unlucky you can be attacked while doing this. Some of the enemies, who are mutated crew members, often scream 'kill me!' or 'I'm sorry!' as they attack you. Freaky. Especially if you didn't hear it approaching.

Much of the story is told through audio logs and ghosts (like Bioshock) which is pretty cool.

There is a cheat which reduces or disables the weapon degradation system. Weapons degrade way too fast IMO, so that's good even if you want to avoid cheating in general. I had a look, and there's also a cheat to spawn cybernetic modules, which are the items used to upgrade your skills and attributes.

Overall it's one of my favourite horror games. :)

What about Just Cause 2, now?

It's not particularly expensive, probably because it isn't the most high-profile release this year.

I really enjoyed the whole "Causing death and destruction all over the map!" in Prototype, will Just Cause 2 tickle that same nerve?

System Shock 2 (I get scared easily - will I pee my pants? Are there cheats?)

It's a great game, very atmospheric and great voice acting. There's a bunch of skills like hacking, repair, weapon modfication, various biotic skills, etc. People say it is scary, but the only thing that made me jump was when stuff explodes suddenly or when a monster appears where I least expect it. The enemies are more humorous than scary actually. (imo of course)

There are all sorts of cheats, you can even spawn items and monsters. Ammo is very scarce so I like to spawn a tower of ammo boxes when I run low.

If you can find someone to play with, the game also has a great co-op function. You can play through the whole game together, give items to each other, and each specialize in a different skill to make things easier.

Is metro 2033 any good, I know theres a thread, but I assume the thread would only attract people who like the game, so im hoping to get the best result here. It looks fun but replay wise I doubt much would change, and exploration seems very limited.

Left 4 Dead 2 is quite good. I was pissed when they announced it, cause I had just got l4d. Anyhow it is a good game and I bought it off game fly for $25. I'm happy with it.

Might want to get the 2nd. If you're willing to spend the extra 10 bucks it's $30 on Steam right now.

Well I did hear that it has two different endings so maybe it has a little replay value.I'm afraid I have not played the game at all though but am interested in it as well.

So what about Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines?

That is an AWESOME game. The combat can get a little tedious at times as it's heavily numbers based, but the sheer atmosphere, storytelling and replayability make it a wonderful game. There's one level - the haunted hotel - that you will NOT be able to get through without at least one 'OH GOD!' moment. For an older PC RPG, it has some thrilling stuff.

Oh, and if I may make a suggestion... If you want a nice dash of comedy as well as dark foreshadowing... Play as a Malkavian. They're loads of fun. :P

So what about Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines?

Bloodlines, I think, is a perfect example of the term "flawed gem." The game they were trying to make that you can see behind the scenes, and which they partially succeeded at, is truly amazing. Unfortunately, the company went out of business and the game was never properly completed. There are lots of incomplete quests/areas, things planned but not added, and many many bugs thanks to lack of patching/beta. So, while most games have a basic measure of "good stuff vs flaws," Bloodlines is a harsher contrast of "amazing stuff vs major problems." If you like action-rpg's, though, I think it's definitely worth it.

Definitely get it, you wont regret it. Look up some gameplay videos on Youtube if you need further convincing.
