Unofficial "Is [insert game here] any good?"

Yeah I think I'm going to grab Civ V. I played the demo for almost 2 hours. It seems great.

I'd recommend it. The controls are a bit weird, and it's quite obvious it was a straight port. However I quickly got used to the controls so now it doesn't bother me. I haven't run into any issues with the DRM so far.

AC2 is loads better than the first. There are a lot more weapons, mission types, and there is actual strategy and thinking involved. "What is the best way to do this mission without getting caught?"

I'd pick it up. $17.50 for the deluxe edition is a good deal. I paid full price only a week before this sale -_-. It was worth every penny though.

I bought it, it was only 15 euro, and I enjoyed it when I was playing it at my friends house on his ps3. It can't be that bad a port (hopefully  )

It requires Ubisofts own DRM, which is why I have not bought the game.

Spider-Man Web of Shadows shipped today from GameFly. How is that? I enjoyed Shattered Dimensions, however I didn't finish it (did about half of Act 2) because it felt pretty repetitive and button mashy. I mean my wrist would hurt after every level and I'd have to take a break. It got to the point where I'd avoid fighting enemies just because I didn't feel like mashing until they were dead (none of the minions ever put up a good fight but they don't die easily either). The tiered boss fights also got annoying. It was cool that they always added another complication, but the whole fight and chase and fight again thing sometimes got on my nerves.

What is the best Spider-Man game? Spider-Man 3 and one other Spidey game are also in my queue (can't think of the title right now).

Same here. I'm going to wait until I have a PS3 to play that game, unless Bubisoft decides to change their mind about their DRM.

I just saw that Bully Scholarship Edition is 3.75 on Steam. Would anyone here recommend this game?

I'd say it's worth a play, especially at that price. I grabbed it myself, and I already have the PS2 version (the PC version has a much higher resolution and some additional content.) Basically it's GTA, but set in a preppy boarding school, and has Rockstar's usual flair for good characters and fun gameplay.

... unless Bubisoft decides to change their mind about their DRM.

Unlikely, sadly. :shakehead:

Having received the game as a gift, I have to say the concerns over the DRM are justified. Twice I lost over 6 hours of gameplay because the game simply failed to save my progress when I quit. No matter how fun the game actually was (and it was quite fun, more so than the first AC) that sort of glitch is totally unacceptable.

I'd give web of shadows a rent. Not much to do in that game outside of Main storyline. You should BUY Ultimate Spiderman though.

Is AC2 a good PC game?

I've tried it on the ps3 at my friends house, but is it a bad port? Is the DRM horribly annoying? It's on 50% sale today on steam.

The DRM is crap, but the controls aren't bad. You get used to them. And it's a pretty fun game.

@Jonahirt: I only played Spider-Man 2, but it was a damn fine game.

Hum, how about Front Mission Evolved? I am looking for a good mecha game, and not many have been released in recent years. Just waiting for a really good Gundam game to come out, actually.

Is C&C3 worth buying in the Steam sale for a mere £3.74? Bear in mind I'm not a huge fan of the Tiberium universe or anything, but I remember playing the demo a few years back and it seemed like a decent enough RTS. Anyone got an opinion on it?

Any opinions on Far Cry 2?

And Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising? I heard they came out with a patch for it, but did it take care of the constant bugs and glitches?

Thanks to any who reply.

I might be in a small minority, but I enjoyed both games. Far Cry 2 was good fun, the only things that let it down were the voice acting (everyone talks too fast) and the fact that guard posts respawn too quickly.

I even enjoyed Dragon Rising (Xbox 360) and the PC version comes with a mission editor and the ability to download user missions. And to be honest, I never noticed any major bugs or glitches (Singleplayer), only some annoyances in multiplayer like invincible AI :o

I've been replaying Metro 2033, and while researching similar games, Hellgate: London kept cropping up - I've heard it's good, but not done any more investigation other than googling a few screenshots. What time period is it set in? I've seen screenshots of people wearing cyberpunky medieval armour. What's the gameplay like? I think I've seen first and third person screenshots.

Another game is Killing Floor, again I don't know much about it but I think it's a post-apocalyptic shooter set in the UK, right?

Also, I bought the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC and CoP pack in the steam sales, just installed SoC, is it worth getting Clear Sky as well?

Killing Floor is an arcadey wave-based shooter, if you like some silly team MP with friends and lodesemone then get it. Clear Sky isn't as good as CoP or SoC. Hellgate: London isn't good full-stop.

Hellgate london:
1. mostly stable.
2. generic rpg with a generic interface. Gameplay is much more fast-paced than WoW in PvE and has much more fast-paced gameplay in general.
3. Gameplay is reasonably challenging.
4. Unless you're korean, no multiplayer.
Recommendation: give it a rent to see if you like the single-player gameplay. Lack of Multiplayer support for western gamers may diminish the game's longevity for you. Hellgate London is a meh title. Nothing special about it really.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky:
1. The most unstable games in the series.

2. Kinda bridges the C.O.P and SHOC gameplay. Playing Clear Sky would give you a better chance to learn the ropes of the clear sky changes carried over to C.O.P. C.O.P is the only game in the series that has high-powered enemies as a consistent threat throughout the entire experience. Clear Sky and SHOC both start you off with less challenging enemies than C.O.P thinks is a good idea to have roaming around in the first area. Clear Sky and C.O.P share the new artifact hunting system and the threat of blowouts. C.O.P however kinda expects you to already know how to deal with it.

Reccomendation: Buy if your really in love with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Otherwise, stick with C.O.P and do not buy Clear Sky if you want to enjoy the changes to the gameplay clear sky made to the series.

Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos? Impulse is carrying it for 10 bucks. I love a good space sim, and I enjoyed Freelancer for a while, but the game felt a little flat once I finished the story.

Tropico 3 for the 360 and PS3. For those strategy starved on the consoles. Lots of micro management if you want, or you can play it simple, like a city builder. Its much more though, Id even put it right up there with Civ Rev for "Best Strat Game" on the 360. you can even play it like an RPG. Not to mention one of the best soundtracks of the year.

Alpha Protocol

It is said to be rather buggy, but I've been able to play through the entire game without noticing a single bug. The best part of the game is the dialogue and the choices you can make, and the consequences for these actions and how characters recognize these.

All the actual action stuff isn't that interesting unfortunately. It's possible to use Stealth, but in some situations (boss fights and other shootouts) it is made impossible, and the AI sometimes knows where you are even if nobody should be able to see where you are. And the levels are pretty linear, you can't jump or anything like that.

Overall I enjoyed it, because the story/choices stuff is so good. I'm glad I got it cheap though.

Singularity

Singularity is pretty mediocre. The time-bending elements are cool, but for the most part it's just a sci-fi Call of Duty.

I might get it then, People say the same thing about FNV but I never had that big of a problem with it.

Yeah, Alpha protocol is a pretty safe bet. Felt more like Mass Effect 2 THAN Mass Effect 2.

I went into Alpha Protocol thinking it would be somewhat like Deus Ex in terms of gameplay, I was so terribly wrong there. But once I had that figured out it was pretty fun. :P

Killing Floor is an exact copy of today's England, especially London.

AFAIK
