Hellgate: London kept cropping up - I've heard it's good, but not done any more investigation other than googling a few screenshots. What time period is it set in? I've seen screenshots of people wearing cyberpunky medieval armour. What's the gameplay like? I think I've seen first and third person screenshots.
Oh, I had a lot of fun with Hellgate, but keep in mind I only paid $2.50 for it; however, having had so much fun with it, I would have paid maybe $15 or $20 and not felt ripped off. I highly recommend the Revival patch, as well as some mods, like Seferoth's "Compile Mod" which makes a lot of nice changes. It's set in the not-so-distant future, where demons have invaded Earth. It's less medieval armor than body armor that looks like streamlined classic plate armor. There's a blend of magic and technology, so you'll see things like guns that stream lightning or swords that do spectral damage. There are three factions, Templars, Hunters, and Cabalists, and each faction has two classes you can choose from. In general, Templars are going to wear armor and wield melee weapons; Hunters are going to wear your cover-ops modern military armor and use guns; the Cabalists wear funky kickass stuff and equip focus items (wielded in each hand) to improve their spellcasting abilities. Classes have their own skill trees, and classes within each faction sometimes share a few similar skills. Leveling up gives you points to distribute amongst your attributes as well as skillpoints for your skills. Weapon and armor customization is pretty fun, too, but I'm not very good at explaining it.

There's also a modding tool you can download to make your own mods for the game. You have to register to the forums in order to download the files. The next Revival patch will have new improvements and even try to incorporate content that previously had only been available in the multiplayer server world thingy.
I enjoyed the game plenty with single player. I played as the Blademaster class (Templar faction) in 3rd person mode, so it was like a fun futuristic-magic-fantasy romp killing demons, doing side quests, getting awesome gear, and causing general mayhem and carnage. The quests have some standard "go here, kill this" fare, but some of the main quest quests have some interesting puzzles and "minigames" (such as directing troops, using artillery to shoot down a flying demon ship, and exploring a possessed man's demented mind). There are some funny moments. The story starts losing a bit of cohesion toward the end, but I just filled in the blanks with my own creativity.
Once you finish the game the first time around, you can go back and do it again with your high-level character and try to get more and better loot. I have some gripes with some of the skills, but I've read that some of the nerfing will be rectified in the upcoming new Revival patch. There are also mods that will tweak some of the classes to improve balance and make certain skills more useful at both low and high character levels. There's a hard level cap of 50.
On my next playthrough, I think I'm going to create a Cabalist character. I have yet to find out if the dialog changes depending on your class's faction, but I think it might since NPCs did say some dialog that seemed Templar-faction specific. I'm also not sure if being in a different faction opens up new quests; my hunch is that it doesn't, which is sort of a bummer, since there is great potential for faction-related questlines and faction conflict.
EDIT: you can play in 1st person or 3rd person, depending on your preference. I play 3rd person, but I can see how 1st person would be useful for aiming projectile weapons (guns).
