Unofficial "Is [insert game here] any good?"

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:29 pm

Thinking about getting a game, but not sure if it'll be any good? Ask away!

For those replying: please explain why you did or didn't like a game; constructive feedback is more informative than a simple "this game was awesome" or "that game was awful."

For those asking: it helps to know what sort of game aspects turn you on or off, and what you already know about the game you are interested in. It's hard to address "is [game] good?" if we aren't sure what you like and don't like, and whether or not you know the basic info about the game (genre, plot premise).

Useful Links:

http://www.metacritic.com/games/ <- useful insofar as you get a large sample of "professional" opinions, as well as many thoughtful and insightful user comments/ratings. Will not guarantee that you will love or hate a game you are considering purchasing/playing. Sometimes contains useful info about game problems that you can ask us here about (i.e. "I read [game] has a ton of bugs/has long loading times, are they really horribly buggy/long?").

So for those that bought it in alpha, how is Minecraft? I've been watching a "Lets play" on youtube, and the game looks very interesting.

Any opinions on Black and White 2? I was thinking about getting it on the cheap, I normally quite like games like that.

The Outfit

Alan Wake

Haven't played The Outfit

Alan Wake was pretty weird, imo, it was good, but the story really had me going. I had 3 different theories of what was happening lol. And when the game ended, I still had 2 theories lol. So the story, very weird. Gameplay was good, different lights and stuff. It wasn't all that scary, imo, I think that's what they were going for, but there were no moments of jumping lol. It's more of a "weird" scary. If you like single player games, with good stories, it's definitely worth a rent.

Alan Wake

I enjoyed Alan Wake. It's a good single player experience with fun combat, a nice setting, and an interesting story. It's not the longest game in the world though. If I remember correctly it was about 8-10 hours long for me. I'd recommend either a rental or see if you can get a cheap copy somewhere.

Looking in to getting Star Ocean: Til the End (think that's the name of it). I've played and loved the Final Fantasy series through 6 to 13 along with Eternal Sonata and various other JRPG's.

Can anyone offer an opinion on this game?

Star Ocean: Til the End of Time for PS2...
I consider it pretty good lasts about 40~50 hours... I loved the battle mechanics pretty much the best of the series based on that. You may or may not like the climix as you may think it was a ripoff...

I'm a fan of the series (2 and 3 anyway, haven't played 1 and 4) and think it's an excellent game. It should be noted, though, that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKQl1LpynVQ is very different from Final Fantasy games. It's realtime and can be very chaotic, no calmly waiting your turn, and you'll need some tolerance for bad (and very frequently repeated) call-your-attacks voice acting. If the fighting style and commentary are acceptable to you, though, it's a great game. Very large with plenty to do, lots of good challenges (unlike most jRPG's which I find skimp on the difficulty), tons of post-game content/challenges, and unlockable difficulty levels.

Thanks a lot for the replies. To me, the combat in that video looks like a cross between Final Fantasy 13 and Eternal Sonata. I'll be giving this a try, it's only £6.

I'll third that game just to make you feel better. :P

I played it one year when I was sick with the flu, like really bad throwing up sick and I still couldn't stop playing it. I ended up playing through alot of the game over a couple days with a bucket beside me.

It really is a great game.

Gothic 3.

Is it any good? I've heard some conflicting ideas about it, some say it's horrible (especially when unpatched), some say that it's really good. I really enjoy RPGs, and played Oblivion/Morrowind a ton. Anyone think I'll like Gothic 3?

Mmm, I have it, but haven't played it yet (waiting to finish Gothic 2). Here's the http://www.worldofgothic.com/gothic3/ page on it. Gothic 1 was a lot of fun (note: I used the community patch), but it isn't quite your typical RPG in terms of character development and creation. Um, I do suggest god mode, because the combat controls for G1 & 2 are absolutely horrifically bad. I hear G3's controls are more sane and normal, I can't wait to try 'em. :P

You can get the game for really cheap - under $10. I think that'd be quite worth it. You can also try picking up the Gothic Universe package that has all the Gothic games. I didn't bother getting the Collected G3 edition, because I hear the expansion pack "Forsaken Gods" was a pile of steaming poo. There's a Gothic 3 demo, http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=108, you can give that a try. :)

I bought it during a steam sale, and after playing the first 30 minutes or so, I very much regret it. Admittedly I haven't left the first little town you start off in, but after playing what I did I have absolutely no desire to play it anymore. If I were you I'd just wait for Gothic 4 to come out.

I was thinking about getting Overlord 2. I never played the first one.

Can anyone post up something about this game? Good things about it? Bad things about it? Cool features/gameplay things?

Also, what about Risen? I want a Two Worlds like game, cool magic/fighting visuals with big huge monsters to fight.

I actually really like Overlord 2. It's easy going, and casual, but it got frustrating at parts. The one I remember the most is when you
Spoiler
have to fight that spider boss, game doesn't even give you a hint on what to do. Maybe I was just having a stupid moment and it isn't that hard to figure out, but

it's a fun game, and it can't be that much anymore, so yeah, I'd say go for it. :goodjob:

I seem to be the only person on this forum that likes this game. Having never played the previous 2, I don't have any bias which I think is a good majority of peoples problem. Pretty bad game when it isn't patched but there is the community patch which helps things a lot, even adds some new graphical tweaks.

I liked Overlord 2 as well. It wasnt overly complex, some parts of the game made me want to tear my hair out, but it was still fun and worth the $5 I paid on Steam.

Nope, you're not alone. I really enjoyed Gothic 3 WHEN IT WAS PATCHED. Playing unpatched Gothic 3 is like trying to get a cat to fly. But when it's fully patched with both official and community patches its quite enjoyable, with a massive world, plenty of quests and (male) characters to meet and some very pretty scenery. Combat is a pain in the [censored] but thats sort of expected in the Gothic series I guess.

I suppose this is more about whether a games system is good than a specific game. I've been considering (on and off) getting a PSP (used, of course, since new ones cost so bloody much). All I'd want to use it is to play games - no skype, no internet, no movies, just games. Might even hook it up to my tv to play.

Which model should I get? I've done some research.
- Are 3000 loading times significantly faster than the 2000's?
- Are the 3000's scan lines & ghosting really as fugly as the comparison images I see on google indicate? Increased vivid colors and contrast vs. icky scan lines and ghosting: Is it worth it?

What do I need to know about battery life and other model differences?
How durable/reliable is the system, assuming I take good care of it (screen protector, carry case, hard outer case, etc)? Can I expect it to last me for, say, five years?

I've never owned a portable gaming device before. My main concern is the squinting-factor of looking at a tiny screen (and if the contrast will be high enough to enjoy the game visuals in a lit indoor setting). Are there enough good games (minus the shovelware) that aren't fps/racing/jrpgs so that the system is a good investment? I browsed the game section on Amazon and spotted about 6 to 10 games that I'd want to check out.

I know am pretty sure that Nintendo's handhelds are killing the console scene right now. They are king over all other gaming consoles. They even reign over their Wii.

 I've only had a PSP-2000 with a zagg invisible shield screen protector...
I don't think I've played it long enough in one sitting to need to recharge so I'll guess 6~10 hours
Mine is about 3 years old and mostly kept at the side of my bed without a case so it hold up pretty well. I haven't had a problem with the small screen as my vision is only limited by me being unable to read anything past 10 feet :P
I recommend getting a slightly larger memory card for it say 8GB minimum for anything you might want to buy from the PSone Classics.
My list of games I have most of which are JRPGs :P

Breathe of Fire III
Castlevania Dracula X
Crimson Gem Saga
Grand Theft Auto VC stories
Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lion
Lunar Silver Star Harmony
Jeanne D'Arc
Silent Hill Origins
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable
Star Ocean First Departure
Star Ocean Second Evolution
Tales of Eternia
*Tales of the World... I think I hate this one :P

Risen is decent, but short. I would highly suggest you look into getting TW2 which releases very soon. It looks to be about the most improved game sequel ever.

I personally liked overlord 1 more, in overlord 2 moral choices are from good and evil to enslave or kill, the mounts really dont add much to the game, and the plot isnt that great, I would reccomend overlord 1. If you like it get 2, a certain area/plot will be more interesting when you play 1 first. I didnt like 2, I disliked it to the point where I was on the last mission and said "[censored]this" and quit. Raising hell is great too.

All the stores that carry it here have it for $50-$60. I was thinking to myself that it wouldnt be worth it to get it at that price. Seeing as I already have a small collection of games I have yet to play and play through.

On Steam, in the risen descrip it says
Over 60 hours of Immersive open world gameplay.
Alter the destiny of the island by the actions you take

What kind of destiny altering in the game is there? Is it actually noticable, fun, and cool?
I also checked out the bestiary online, diddnt see anything impressive. No dragons or big constructs, fearless monsters and such.

I cannot wait for Two Worlds 2. Today I picked up Two Worlds (second time I got this game, first one I traded in). Its so clunky its hilarious, it boggles me how they got Microsoft to okay this game for release.
