Unofficial "Is [insert game here] any good?"

What's the deal with STALKER and it's expansions? Which of them, if any, are worth buying? I see alot of positive feedback floating around these forums for STALKER and as someone who likes sandboxy games I'm surprised I still haven't played it yet. I've played my current collection of games to death and was just wondering what you guys thought of it?

Cheers

I'm very fond of Shadow of Chernobyl (first one) and Call of Pripyat (sequel). Reviews for Clear Sky (prequel) have been mixed, so I haven't played that. Personally, I'd recommend playing the original first. It's an excellent game all by itself, and there are also amazing mods you can get if you're into that sort of thing. I also feel like it's a bit more structured than Call of Pripyat at the expense of less "sandboxy" gameplay.

Is Risen any good?

Yes. I had fun playing it on the PC.

Con's:
It's a simple game, and after 1 plattrough you've seen about everyting. (Except some difference between classes at the beginning)
The story isn't all that great, and sometimes even predictable. Sometimes this causes you to wonder what to do next. (I was stuck on a part where I was told not do something or be killed. So I didnt do it. Turned out I had to do it to progress in the main quest)
Traveling can be a pain in the beginning.

Pro's:
I couldn't find any anoying bugs, or anoying gameplay mechanics. Everything worked well and was well balanced IMHO.
I really liked the fact that you had to save up for certain items or train to enter certain area's. It gives a greater feeling of acomplishment when you finally get that armor, or reach that loot chest behind that big monster.
Combat can be hard. You will die quite a few times. You will need to learn how to fight.
It has side-quests.

I'll probably be getting the 360 version because I'm not sure if my PC can handle it. Anyway thanks for answering me.

Now that the price has dropped into the 30s, I'll probably buy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1 and 2 this year. I'm going to play single-player campaign only. How is the second MW compared to the first?

MW1 was a much better game. It has good SP and the best MP of the franchise. One thing that MW2 has ove 1 is the Spec ops missions. They are always fun to play with a a buddy.

Be a bit careful about getting the 360 version of Risen. As I recall there were quite a few complaints about the 360 version (poor graphics, bugs, clunky controls, etc) while the PC version was quite well received.

For the OP: Amazon has "Metro 2033" for $ 43 Xbox and $ 20 for PC. Not sure why there's a price difference. I use Amazon for most of my games now, since the selection for PC games in stores is more limited these days.

I usually look past issues like that. Most games that people complained about issues like that I found enjoyable.

Has anyone tried Monday Night Combat? Steam has it for $15, and it looks kind of interesting. Kind of like a Tf2, but in 3rd person.

Is Battlefield: Bad Company 2 any good? The last FPS I've owned was Call of Duty 4. I'm extremely impressed with Battlefield 3 and how that's turning out, and I'd love to prepare myself for that game.

Yes. For how cheap it is right now, there's no reason not to buy it. Great game, the bullet drop adds in a lot more realism into multiplayer. When I had BC2, I could go back and forth between CoD and BC and never get bored.

You can find most PC games for at least $10 less than the console counterparts, for games that aren't used anyway. I only have a PC so I do not look at the used game market.

Is Runescape worth it? I heard it was really great, but ehhh, ehhh, ehh uhh, ohh ehh.

Is Prototype worth it? I heard it wasn't that great, but the fans say it's spectacular.

Is Minecraft worth it? I've played on my friend's account for a few minutes, and now I want to get my own.

I didn't like Prototype very much but I never beat the second level, I had to put it down, it just wasn't my kind of game.

You'll either love Minecraft or hate it, it all comes down to your opinion on that sort of game, a must buy for a creative mind, but not for a completionist.

Prototype was...meh...I didn't really care for it. It was fun for a little bit, and fun to just play around on, but it had a few technical problems. The story wasn't that great either in my opinion.

I really like Minecraft. Sometimes I will play it for a week straight then put it down for a bit and play another game, but I always come back to it. It is also a good game to play when you have nothing to do.
Plus if you ever get sick of the sprites, you can always download a texture pack of your choice, and there are some great mods for it.

That depends. What other MMORPGs have you played? It's not like WoW.

Do you like a lot of grinding? If so, go for it.
Do you like a lot of PvP? Last I checked, a lot of it got nerfed and taken out, so there wasn't a whole lot, but that might be changed as that was a few years ago.
Are you okay with graphics that aren't anything special? If not, that'll be a problem.

I played it for a little over a year and had fun though. It's not for everyone.

I'd also like to ask, what about Dark Messiah of Might and Magick? Is it good? Or does it have nothing to offer outside of kicking people and objects to have fun with the physics?

Runescape is crap. Play guild wars.

Prototype is fun. It's probably dirt cheap by now, might as well get. Also, they've announced prototype 2, so you could use prototype as a barometer for if you're interested in what prototype 2 offers when it hits shelves in 2012 or so.

Minecraft is definitely worth it. It's like eating souls.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magick isn't really for might and magick fans, but it's fine for everyone else. Don't get the 360 port, get the pc version. It's a pretty average game over all. Some nice gameplay mechancis hampered by repetitive combat instances. But still, it's an okay game.

The main quest is pretty fun, but after the main quest there's really nothing to do other than tacked-on little challenges like jumping off a building and landing in a specific spot, or killing a certain number of soldiers or civilians in a number of seconds. If you can get it for cheap (around $10), then I'd say it's worth it.
