Unofficial "Is [insert game here] any good?"

Post » Mon Jul 05, 2010 5:56 am

Drakan: Order of the Flame. I've read positive reviews about it, but it seems to be a lesser-known game. I did a little research, there seems to be a few issues getting it to run on XP, but it seems like it is possible. Anyone play this game? Is it good? I have the PS2 Drakan game and I've played a little bit of it, and it seemed neat. How much money would you say it's worth? $10? $20? My only option seems to be Ebay, but I don't mind.

What would bother me is if the main characters and story are very one-dimensional.

-----
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. I have heard good things about this from some members of these forums. Why did it get mediocre initial reviews? Was it because of bugs that were fixed in later patches? At what price is the game worth buying? $5?

-----
Albion. Olaf highly recommended this game, but it is a pain in the butt to find, and the lowest price for the complete game (with manual, at least) is $50, which is money that could buy me three to six less-expensive games. Is $50 too high for sensible standards, or is this game really worth it? I mean, I'm not even sure I'll buy it, I just want some info about this old game, like is it good, can it run with DOSBox okay, is there replay value at all?

Is Golden Sun: Dark Dawn any good? I like deep stories but not drama within the story, I also would like games that introduce situations clearly, rather than games that just throw you into the story and expect you to catch up. Turn based combat is okay as long as it isn't unfair.

Thanks.

In my opinion GS:DD is not good, if you played the first two and expect a story just as good as those 2 were, you'll be disappointed.
Spoiler
Almost nothing seems to be added to the story besides Luna and Sol being introduced as new elements (you can't use them in combat or any other applications Psynergy may be used for). Alex is back, they do a piss poor job at "Hiding" him. In the beginning of the game he is labelled as "Masked Stranger" or something to that effect, although if you played the first to games it's blatantly obvious as to who it is, and people who are supposed to be smart (namely Kraden) take a remarkably long time to recognize him (probably about 75% of the game is spent before you officially figure out it's Alex). Alex's role in the story is just as unfathomable as it was before except this time you don't get to figure out his true intentions (Like in TLA where he was after the stone of sages). Oh and The Wise One doesn't show up at all in this game :(

All the equipment and bonus bosses (ex. Dullahan) from the first two games have been re-hashed (with only a couple new bonus bosses), there are no new unique items (everything from Gaia to Sol Blade has been re-made), although their bonus effects and animations have been updated. Combat is practically the same as it was in the first two games. two good changes I can think of are weapons leveling up and gaining bonuses as they do, and this time if you set all 4 party members to attack the same monster, and it ends up being killed on the first attack, the other 3 characters will select a different enemy to attack instead of defending like before.

Oh and the Arena battle function has been removed. :(

I bought a DS as soon as this game was announced, and as soon as I beat the game, I sold both my DS and GS:DD back.

What would bother me is if the main characters and story are very one-dimensional.

I remember playing that game when it first came out. IIRC, the story was run-of-the-mill. There are two types of gameplay: on-foot combat/exploration (think Tomb Raider with melee combat and an inventory system) and dragonback, which was sort of an arcade flight shooter situation. I remember it being fun, but nothing spectacular.

Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. I have heard good things about this from some members of these forums. Why did it get mediocre initial reviews? Was it because of bugs that were fixed in later patches? At what price is the game worth buying? $5?

I snagged a copy for $3 on Ebay a while ago and played through once. Fun, and worth it for the low price tag, but again, nothing amazing there.

Has anyone picked up Crysis 2 yet? If so, how is it?

I got a super-cheap EA download key from one of those CD key clearing houses. I've only played about 3-4 hours so far. It's a good FPS and they did an amazing job optimizing the engine for consoles. I've never seen a 360 game that looks as good as Crysis 2 does (a friend brought his 360 version by the other night).

In a lot of ways I think the first Crysis looked better. Like I said, they did an amazing job optimizing the game engine for Crysis 2, but in some ways it's not as detailed visually as the first one was. I have to admit that I'm a tad disappointed in the game. I loved the original Far Cry for the PC and I liked Crysis quite a bit until toward the end of the game. The large, open design of the outdoor areas in those games made it fun to figure out how to scout an enemy position and plan an attack strategy. For whatever reason (at risk of sounding like an elitist the reason is most likely console RAM & video memory limitations) they decided to make the levels in Crysis 2 much smaller and more contained, which to me largely turns the game into just another corridor shooter. Don't get me wrong...there are still some strategic opportunities there, but IMO they're not as plentiful which leads to fewer opportunities to get creative with your tactics. I've played more than enough shooting-gallery-on-rails titles for one lifetime. Seriously, when are people going to get tired of those? :P

If you have a PC and haven't played the original Far Cry I'd recommend that over Crysis 2 despite its ridiculous story and terrible voice acting. :)

Citizen Kabuto: Giants

I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes. The game gets fantastic reviews. The wit, from what I experienced, is promising. However, I had a horrible time navigating with the jet-pack; at one point, you have to rescue a bunch of hapless fellows clinging on to some precipices for dear life. You have to use the jet pack, which has a usage meter that, once expended, needs to be recharged. I was unable to accurately fly the character to save the targets before they lost their grip and fell.

I bought the game for the PS2 and for the PC, in the hopes that one or the other's control scheme (gamepad vs. mouse + keyboard) would solve my navigation problem. It didn't. It could just be me that svcks. The game is pretty inexpensive, maybe $5 or less, for either platform. You could give it a go. The PC version has the advantage that there are some community-made graphic updates to make the game look prettier. It also runs a bit smoother on the PC than on the PS2, from what I recall. PC controls... lots more controls for the keyboard than with the mouse, but I don't think it really matters. Also, if I recall correctly, you can use a PC gamepad with the game if you want.

So, right, advice. If you know you're pretty good at in-air navigation, go for it. When I researched the game, everyone says it has a great wit and is very fun to play. I didn't get the hang of it, but that's probably just my own quirk. PC is probably the better platform to purchase the game for.

It's a fun and interesting game, but as Alaisiagae mentioned, it has problems. Control can be wonky and it's frustratingly difficult at times, and that frustration ramps up with the combination of instability and no in-mission save function. I never finished it, after losing all desire to play when I spent 45 minutes in a mission, died, had to start over, spent another 45 minutes, and crashed.

To me its a fun game with great sense of humour . TIMMY.
The graphics looks great at the time so I would not change it.
Yes it is frustrating because of the saves and cannot save during a mission.
The jet back pack it is a hand full.

Least it runs on W7 and can run it on the native res on my 22' inch wide screen monitor without using any mods.
To me the game ran stable.

I up to the 2nd part of the story that I require a jet ski and escape with it. Least at that point my dying ATI HD4870 run it.

I brought it back at 2002 and It is the first time I played it. It cost $9 AUD.

Awesome. I'm about 7 or 8 hours in and loving it. CryEngine 3 is much better optimised than CryEngine 2, and looks fantastic. Something not a lot of people mention is the sound, but it's fantastic too. It runs very well on my PC (even better than I had anticipated) and controls extremely well.

I must admit I was initially a bit worried when I first heard that it was going to take place in New York City instead of a tropical island somewhere, but it's not an issue at all. Crytek have done a nice job of getting plenty of variety in the environments to stop it from getting boring.

The story and characters aren't the best so far, but they aren't particularly bad either, and they are decent enough to keep the game moving forward. I've encountered a few issues with the AI occasionally bugging out, but it's not enough to take any of the fun out of the game.

All in all, I think it's an improvement over the original (and Warhead), and I'd recommend it to any shooter fan.

I really enjoyed the time I spent playing Guild Wars. I'd see if they have a free trial or at least watch some game play if you are unsure if it is your type of game.

I've been playing GW since last summer and it's not bad. The Trilogy edition is around $ 30 US these days and the expansion Eye of the North is around $10. (You can see how the game has evolved over the years; some veteran players claim there has been a power creep, with players' abilities becoming too powerful. The first game in the series, "Prophecies", is my least favorite because the later games like "Nightfall" and "Eye of the North" are less tedious, IMO.) There are two ways of playing it: solo (with bots called heroes that are modifiable and the older bots called henchmen which cannot be modified) or in groups. I'm a PvE solo player who uses seven heroes in the group -- it was only this Spring that the company made it possible to have a full group of heroes instead of, say, three heroes and the rest henchmen.

The PvP players and those who quest in groups have posted in the GW Guru forum saying that the game isn't as populated with players as when they started 5 or 6 years ago. Many players are waiting for GW 2, which may be released by a year from now -- no one knows yet. But GW 2 will be even better, because the gameworld will be persistent. The upcoming "dynamic events" will scale to the number of players involved, and will include enemies invading a town, fighting dragons, and so on; over 1000 dynamic event areas are planned. (In GW 2, you will stumble across an area where an event is occurring and join in on the action.) The sequel is set 250 years after GW 1 and the technology will be closer to Elizabethan in some ways, though still a sword and sorcery world.

Anyway, I've enjoyed the first GW but it depends on what you're looking for. GW uses instancing, meaning if you're outside of a town you're playing in an instance with only your group and the various NPC questgivers and NPC opponents, unless you're grouped with human players. Kill stealing and griefing isn't possible and won't be possible in the sequel, even though the devs used to work for Blizzard and kept many of the MMO aspects. GW isn't an MMO in the same sense as WoW. I hope this helps a little, and try the GW Wiki for more information. GW doesn't have an official forum but the Guild Wars Guru and Guild Wars Guru 2 websites are the next thing to official, since the devs are in contact with them.

I'm trying to decide if I should buy a PSP UMD cleaner and a PSP UMD lens cleaner. The total would be less than $10 for both items.

Pro's: if my lens needs cleaning, I can use the lens cleaner. I bought the PSP used, it had a lot of dust inside it. I cleaned most out with compressed air, but I didn't disassemble the entire PSP, so there's probably dust still in there. And yesterday my game froze on a loading screen for the first time.
Also, I tend to buy my games used from Gamestop. Although it seems impossible for someone to really get scratches or fingerprints on the UMD disc, it happens, and it is really very difficult for me to clean the disc due to the UMD disc-case.
Con's: I don't know if these devices are reliable or good. The only ones for cheap are made by GameDr. There are only a few reviews for each on Amazon, and though those are positive, I would prefer a larger sampling to base my decision on.

Has anyone had experience with any of these? Any d.i.y. methods that are cheap and reliable? I'm just thinking that if, in a few years, I run into a problem, I won't be able to find these devices at low prices (if at all). I'd be more inclined to jury-rig my own methods for cleaning if the devices were more expensive, but at less than $5 each, it seems like they'd be pretty convenient for the price.

What do you folks recommend?

COD:BO. I didn't like. I bought it because of the trailer (my mistake). I only played single player. Friends told me the online version is better.
Why: Too much of a movie. Felt rushed to get to waypoints and complete the mission. At one point I wanted to turn around and go back down a path, it didn't let me.
I felt like it was just take any wepaon and start shooting people (yes, I know, it is a first person shooter, but I thought Crysis 1 was much better).
I prefered the earlier games from my 'War Chest' set.
You want to run down the street to reach your goal, sorry, you have to get in the car with us instead.

Is Sims Medieval any good?
I never played a Sims game before. I played Sim City games which I do like. It looks like a 'cute' game to just pass the time with, which is fine.
Is there more to it than what is seen in the trailers?
What is the extent of building? as far as building choice and where to put it.
Could multiple gameplays be different?
Any other input you might have?

Excellent game, its a must play whether you're a Batman fan or not. The combat is simple but highly addictive, the stealth parts are fun instead of detracting from the game, and the story is dark and well thought out(with plenty of appearances in some way or another of villains from Batman). That is actually one of the best parts about the game, how well the characters are portrayed.

Yes. The fact that it comes with a vinyl record of the soundtrack makes it well worth the price.

Have you played Halo? I have Halo CE and Halo 2 (both as PC games), though I recently tried to replay Halo CE and quit in frustration at one of the levels (the Library).

Is Fallout 3 too recent? I'm playing it for the first time and for a role-playing game it seems like a shooter pretty often. The game "Stalker:Shadow of Chernobyl" is also excellent.

Crysis 2?

Two Worlds 2?

Final Fantasy 13?

The 3rd Birthday?

Tactics Ogre?

I'm going to have some money to spend soon and I was thinking about getting 1 or 2 of these. So are these games any good?
