Unofficial "Is [insert game here] any good?"

Post » Sun Jul 04, 2010 9:01 pm

Thinking about getting a game, but not sure if it'll be any good? Ask away!

For those replying: please explain why you did or didn't like a game; constructive feedback is more informative than a simple "this game was awesome" or "that game was awful."

For those asking: it helps to know what sort of game aspects turn you on or off, and what you already know about the game you are interested in. It's hard to address "is [game] good?" if we aren't sure what you like and don't like, and whether or not you know the basic info about the game (genre, plot premise).

http://www.metacritic.com/games/ <- useful insofar as you get a large sample of "professional" opinions, as well as many thoughtful and insightful user comments/ratings. Will not guarantee that you will love or hate a game you are considering purchasing/playing. Sometimes contains useful info about game problems that you can ask us here about (i.e. "I read [game] has a ton of bugs/has long loading times, are they really horribly buggy/long?").

Okay, does anyone know anything about a game called "The Ball"? I saw the box for it in Gamestop (it's a PC game) and it looked pretty cool - an aztec puzzle game in first person, won the 2010 best PC game award, or something like that. It requires Steamworks *ptooie* but I might svck it up if the game is any good.

Also, what about Divinity II (PC)? Is it worth $15? Do you think there will be some sort of "Gold edition" with the addons that I should wait for instead?

Divinity II wasn't bad. A few bits were clunky, and I ran into a couple minor sidequest and "find the key" issues, but still pretty good.

But you definitely want the complete version..... I got just the "Ego Draconis" edition cheap from Amazon, and the ending was lousy - it clearly intends for you to get the expansion in order to actually complete the story, and the ending of the first part is not satisfying because of that.

Now, the "Flames of Vengeance" expansion, I can't find anywhere. Not even sure if it ever came out in the US. But the complete edition (Dragon Knight Saga) was just released recently, so you can get the "full" story that way. Of course, as a recent release, D2:DKS won't be discounted. (I think it's also supposed to have graphics & control improvements?)

(disclaimer - haven't played the full version, so I've no idea how the expansion is. Or if the "true" ending doesn't svck. :) )

AH, I knew that someone would bring Yatzee into this. I'm just surprised that it took so long.

Let me rant about the awesomeness that is Duke Nukem in peace.

Console or pc. never played the pc version myself. Played the 360 version, and was very unimpressed. The combat system couldn't hold up when multiple enemies came into play, the story was pretty blah, the ending throws away any sort of roleplaying you built up this far . . . I think I made my point. Again, the game did get better reviews for the pc. Check out some vids I guess.

COD Black Ops is not a good game.

:nono:

I feel that Black Ops is probably the best shooter out there right now. Although the bar hasn't been raised in quite some time, it is much better than Medal of Honor and Battlefield 2 with all its features IMO. There are a ton of customization options in the game with RPG elements such as Perks, attachments for guns, etc. You can also gamble your points in a variety of game modes called Wager Matches which are pretty fun. Zombies mode is also incredibly fun, along with Dead Ops Arcade. Not to mention you can also play Zork. :disguise:

Battlefield 3, on the other hand, will surely raise the bar.

Is Golden Sun: Dark Dawn any good? I like deep stories but not drama within the story, I also would like games that introduce situations clearly, rather than games that just throw you into the story and expect you to catch up. Turn based combat is okay as long as it isn't unfair.

Thanks.

I'm thinking of buying some old games I missed out on (not old but they're $20 now).

Alan Wake, Batman Arkham Asylum, Resident Evil 5.

How are they?

All three of them are good games. For $20 I'd recommend all three.

I didn't like Black Ops at all. The guns aren't different, there are just some that are clearly better. The game is buggy, at least on PC. The worst of this being that when you see someone you will occasionally lag, obviously this is detrimental to a game based off of reflexes. I was underwhelmed by the money system in the game. I never had a problem with money as there were never many http://denkirson.xanga.com/735016527/black-ops/ to unlock aside from a couple that everyone uses. The campaign took the storyline to far, going from "plausible" in COD4/WAW to "What the [censored] is happening".

I don't agree with it being better than Battlefield 2 (or Bad Company 2) at all, I think both are vastly superior games.

RE5 is...I'm pretty sure if you try to take it seriously you'll wind up hating it, because the story/characters are relentlessly dumb. Really, truly, remarkably dumb. However it's also one of the best games I've played so far this year, because I giggled at all the camp and narm the whole way through and enjoyed myself thoroughly. I didn't want that game to end and still play around with the Mercenaries mode.

Gameplay-wise it was solid. Not sure which platform you're considering it for; I played it on PC using the mouse & keyboard and it handled just fine.

The bot AI (if you're not playing co-op with someone) is a very special sort of stupid, though. It's like they programmed it to do the exact opposite of anything helpful. Eventually you learn to keep it down to a dull roar rather than annoying the hell out of you, or at least I did.

Alan Wake is a fantastic game, probably the best one story wise that was released last year. I can't say I've played Arkham Asylum, but I've heard good things about it. Resident Evil 5 is pretty fun with friends. :)

If you've played other entries in the series, you aren't missing much. Activision's formula is the same for every Call of Duty game.

@Pokoyo: Garry's mod is pretty fun if you like playing god and messing around with posing and such. I think there's still a free version on steam if you want to try it first.

Sounds interesting, I'll probably end up buying it if it is only £6 on steam.

What's the deal with STALKER and it's expansions? Which of them, if any, are worth buying? I see alot of positive feedback floating around these forums for STALKER and as someone who likes sandboxy games I'm surprised I still haven't played it yet. I've played my current collection of games to death and was just wondering what you guys thought of it?

Cheers

I'm pretty sure you need another Source game to play it though. Counter Strike: Source, Half Life 2, either of the Left 4 Deads, Team Fortress 2, etc

STALKER has no expansions, as far as I know. There's Shadow of Chernobyl, the original, Clear Sky, the prequel, and then Call of Pripyat, the sequel. I've only played the first one, but found it to be a worthy purchase, as I'm currently going through it for the third or fourth time. It's a quasi-sandbox; you have a considerable amount of freedom to wander and explore as you wish, but not that much sand, so to speak. You can explore, looking for artifacts and stashes, and shoot enemies, and that's most of it. Instead of one open world like a TES game, the map is split up into several large enclosed areas, like the walled cities in Oblivion, but larger and not split into districts. There are no levels or skills to gain, so if you're not careful death is always a looming possibility, but you do still become considerably more powerful with new weapons, armor, and artifacts.

I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for a "full" sandbox experience, due to the semi-limited freedom in locations and available actions, but it is excellent for dangerous, survivalist/shooter gameplay with far above-average freedom. I haven't played anything else quite like it, especially with mods to enhance the living-world aspects they were shooting for.

Sounds pretty good  Thanks for the insight.

...and yeh, I mistook the sequels and prequels for expansions, my bad.
