Unofficial "Can My PC run Fallout 4?" Thread #8

Yes, if you GTX 960 can keep up on higher resolutions and you get playable frame-rates. But that depends on the game.

Either way, if you have those 30 bucks more, just choose the 4GB model.

Awesome, solid advice, thankyou. I was planning on slowly upgrading my PC bit by bit, so it probably makes sense to go for a 4GB one if I am planning on replacing my CPU with something better within the next 6 months anyways then. Cheers :)

If you have in mind to upgrade your existing CPU as well (as the i7 you have is already a fast processor), i would go for an GTX 970.

So, thing twice. !!!

Better to wait a little and make a proper upgrade to last a long time, as seaching to sell some of your existing hardware afterwards.

That's only a recommendation. ;)

Oh thats cool, so if my CPU is currently i7-3770 then it would handle something like this one ok? http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Graphics_Cards/NVIDIA/56376-GTX_970_GAMING_4G

I was thinking of an eventual upgrade to something like the i7-6770 eventually.

Hello,

My game crashes when I start ("Fallout 4 has stopped working...")

Here′s my Setup (I know it′s below the official requirements) but is there any way to make it run?

GPU: GeForce GTS 250 (1GB)

CPU: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q8400 @ 2,66Hz

RAM; 4,00 GB RAM (DDR2, 398,7 MHz)

WIN 7 x64

-latest drivers and directx

Sorry for the late reply.

The maximum refresh rate of my screen is 75Hz that's why I put a hardlimit of 75fps for "maximum smoothness" and because I haven't had any issues with the engine when above 60.

Well it depends on the situation if my rig can handle it or not. It usually goes down around areas with lots of buildings. Indoors and around smaller settlements it's fine.

I've tried pretty much every combination of Vsync and FreeSync/Adaptive Sync I can think of.

The biggest "issue" is when I turn on the ingame Vsync cause due to FreeSync shenanigans it tends to soft-lock my fps to 35 even though it might go higher unless it's going above 45+.

So it shouldn't be related to the various sync settings, also if I don't limit my fps to at least 75 it will jump above 140 during lockpicking and it becomes impossible to control the bobby pin.

Another thing I've noticed is that during "fps lows" the textures don't seem to switch resolution from the muddy LoD to the actual one so it might be somehow related to the texture streaming?

Based on my observations when it comes to GPU and CPU load I'm pretty sure FO4 is having the same CPU-bottleneck issues Skyrim had. While one of my cores is sitting at 100% (~25% of total) the GPU spins along from 30-60% on heavy load situations like standing in front of Diamond City.

GPU-Z Log standing in front of Diamond City looking at the entrance from near the statue ~30 FPS no Vsync or Adaptive Sync:

So yeah, the CPU is pretty much at max in that situation and the GPU is getting bored. I figured that the 4690K running at 4.5GHz should be able to run it at those details/resolution so it might just be another case of bad optimization?

You may be onto somethimg with that very interesting observation and it would explain a LOT the issues with users still using radeon 4xxx and gtx 2xx cards.

Doing a quick search around, theres even player made patches to run dx10 mode, but it drops fps to being unplayable. While the reqs dont state it, this game may only be dx11 and higher supportive unfortunately.

Looks like i will have to update the guide again...

Thanks for bringing this to attention as i will do some further research later on to confirm this.

I have a gtx 690 4gb and it is near the top of the list, but the game runs so hot it is ridiculous because sli does not work. And that workaround uses parts of fo3 settings, so it really isn't a solution, and forcing alternate frame to 2 also isnta good solution either, it just causes both chips to run really hot. We NEED a patch for this.

It would be a more balanced system. However even as it is, your CPU is just fine.

Also you mean obviously the i7-6700.

But i wouldn't do that for three reasons.

1) You will need a different motherboard with a diffrent CPU socket. (LGA1151 instead of the LGA1155)

2) You will need other memory modules as well. (DDR4)

3) The difference would be approx. 10 fps more.

So, to much hassle and money for an not substantial upgrade.

It seems the game is not very well optimized either for 21:9 resolutions (however playable) nor for fast computer configurations. (so sometimes it works and sometimes not)

I would suggest to try some more compinations to see if you get a smooth transition from lower to higher fps and vice versa.

Also even Freesync is intended to be used with AMD GPUs (and if you ask me that's the right direction to go) Fallout 4 seems not to operate well enough with that feature.

Actually Freesync does this: It synchronizes your Monitors refresh rate to the framerate of your AMD GPU. That should reduce or eliminate (?!?) stuttering and tearing during gaming.

FreeSync should be able to revert to either VSYNC off or VSYNC on behavior if your frame rates are too high or too low. So actually you don't need to switch Vsync on or off through your GPU.

That's how Freesync should work actually. !!!

690 is kepler, so that wouldn't work :(. And forcing the alternative frame thing activates the other chip, but it causes it to run even hotter than before. Not a good idea. Instead of sharing the load it doubles the load.

Hi. I have a gtx 660 2g and can barely run the game with all shadows (8 res), god rays, speculars (75 desired), and anything else that costs disabled at even 960 by 540 res in the corvega factory looking at flourescent lighting in Corvega Factory.

You had listed this card as High settings, which makes sense to me given my experience with other high end graphics games of late.

Someone told me that this was a bug related to the order I downloaded the release date patch after preloading. I will see if redownloading will fix the issue.

Tried That link before, it uses dx9 bits from fo3, causes the game to run at 30 fps or less.

There has been no REAL solution to this problem, Bethesda needs to / should have had sli support at launch. I can play all other games on ultra or ultra / high now a days no issue, no high temps, but this game is ridiculous from this lack of sli support.

My equipment meets the specs, but it won't get past the please stand by screen the first time it's run & then never runs again. WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT THIS? I'm real close to seeking a refund both on the game & the season pass. I'm getting sick of hearing no response from you Bethesda! Numerous file cache checks (Steam) & reinstalls always give the same results. The Steam forums are full of questions about this, & don't even tell me to D/L the drivers, I did that before I ever ran the game. I'm not bothering with sending in my DXDiag, I've read post after post about people who have done this & absolutely NO response was ever given. Getting real old people... How about some info on what's being done?

Because the card hasn't com out yet, i say it approx.

At 1080p (ultra) you should get 32-55 fps.

Thank you for your attention. As you've searched around that some player use patches to run dx10 mode, which I'm afraid I've watched too.

Some used a trick with DirectX SDK to make the game run on software accelerated mode(which Force WARP actually refer to in dxcpl.exe), means that the whole graphics stuff is running on CPU but not GPU as I thought.

Hopeful to know if you may find a way to run the game on hardware Directx10 mode, just like a bottle of purified water in the wasteland as to me.

Thanks and best regards.

Im afraid this is becoming more and more true the more i research on the matter. Trying to get a clear answer from devs, but no response yet.

At this point i have heavily updated the guide based on my findings and placed all dx10 cards in the unplayable fuggedaboutit category. Its sad that an intel hd 5000 can get into the game while something like a gtx 295 cannot.

The game just hasnt supported anyone with dx10 or lower cards and ive searched quite a bit already...even some such as youself making the conclusion that it just wont cut it with dx10 or lower hardware. Farcry 4 was also this way, but it was explicitly stated in the reqs to require dx11...here it is not, which will probably infuriate many people.

I doubt a patch is possible to make dx10 cards work reasonably as there were many complex improvements made in the transition between dx10 and 11.

See if you can get it to work. Go to: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1555642-now-i-am-really-pissed-off/

Sorry for your troubles. I guess it's time to get a new GPU, as the GTX 295 is quite old. I had that GPU on my RIG many years ago. It was a beast. !!!

But well, games evolving too fast, so...

It is an unofficial list, which is explicitly stated. Bethesda did not make the list, nor did they approve of anything besides the actual minimum requirements. Tigs, I'm sure, put a lot of time and effort into it, but without having all the hardware can't promise any results. I understand you aren't happy, but you are blaming people who are just trying to help.
