A Boy and His Dog - I don't think you get more Fallout-y.

I also recommend The Omega Man.

If you don't mind seeing a fallout machinima, check out the DC Chronicles on youtube.

oh wow, thanks! the DC Chronicles' plot and directing svck ass, but you opened a whole new world for me, gonna try and dig up more of this machinima thing

edit:

oh, to the OP: almost forgot. there's dozens of movies like the 6-string samurai, set in the post-apocaliptic world. most of 'em are old, though. I suggest you check this here page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category%3a%50ost-apocalyptic_films

I'm not sure if you're familiar with 'Stalker', but I'd start with that. It's a must-see.

the OP did say 'not mainstream', and Mad Max is as mainstream as it can be.

The first Mad Max wasn't very mainstream, but Road Warrior and Thunderdome are the ones people think of this way.

Thunderdome is exteremely mainstream, Road Warrior is a little mainstream but bad ass, and the original wasn't mainstream at all because it was an Australian independant film.

well, I've seen the first Mad Max a dozen times as a kid, used to be aired on local cable a lot. anyway, I meant the whole Mad Max universe and franchise. since everyone knows about the series it's highly doubtful there are people today who still haven't seen the first movie

I agree, Stalker is a definite watch. It's slow and strange but somehow very enthralling. I love post-apocalyptic movies, they allways have the best atmosphere about them.

Lord of the Flies is also a clear inspiration for some parts of Fallout. But the movies are kind of bad, read the book.

I haven't; I was never a big fan of Mel Gibson.

well, you really should, it's a great movie, even without the 'post-apocalypse' attached. it's a road movie about revenge, very similar to 'Vanishing Point', and believe me, you won't see Mel Gibson too much.

To the OP: you could also try watching 'Threads', I never had the guts to do it though.

I watched this one recently, and it is very good. 20 Years after is a new PA film which is not bad as well. I recently watched the entire series of Logans Run, which I did not know even existed and I can recommend it.

Fallout 1&2 have several indicators towards Mad Max and other Post Apocolyptic movies (Radiation Dreams being one, Star Trek being one of the random encounters). The weapons are based off of Flash Gordon comics, as well as some of the clothing. I would like to see "The Book of Eli" when it comes out. Seems that movie is based off of Fallout for a change.
Fallout is also considered an "unofficial" sequal to Wasteland, an old DOS game. Gus Fargo worked on Wasteland, FO1 and 2.
