Just wanted to give an update. I installed both the unofficial patch and the fake patch (thanks to all for making these!
), and then tried to play again. If I recall correctly, I was still getting a crash when I talked to Nova at the bar in Megaton. Then I had an idea. What If I talked to Gob first, and didn't talk to Nova? Maybe that would help. Well, guess what, it did! I talked to Gob, then right to Moriarity and the game did not freeze up, as it always did before.
I talked to nova *after* I talked to Gob and Moriarity and the game still didn't crash. So what I thought might have been a sound-related bug apparently was related to a bug in the quest to find information on my father. If you talk to people in the wrong order (talking to that girl at the Lantern in Megaton could also cause crashes) in Megaton it can trigger crashes that will make it impossible to play. I hadn't been able to play the game since I got it for Christmas, but thanks to the fan-made patches and some clever thinking on my part, I'm now able to play with no problem!
The game still does crash once in awhile, especially if you do a lot of reloading of save games, but I can often play for 1 or 2 hours+ straight without the game crashing, which is plenty good enough to be able to play the game. I've made a lot of progress in the game so far and it's a lot of fun.
It's pretty ridiculous that fans have to even make patches like this, the game's been out for at least 6 months now, and serious bugs (like the VATS bug) like this should have already been fixed by now by Bethesda. Bethesda makes good RPG's, but they really need to get serious about testing their games more before they release them, and also about fixing bugs that are discovered after release *quickly*. A big thanks for the fan patches that have made it possible for me to play Fallout 3!
