Unofficial Mafia II Thread

This is probably a stupid question but what car stat governs acceleration, horse power?

Torque actually .... Horse Power just governs your ability to keep up speed you're at. It's torque that actually allows you the high RP, thus powerful Hp.

So is there a stat that Mafia 2 gives you that governs acceleration? It only gives you weight, basic max power, and horse power.

No... there could be, but it's just not in the demo, but then again you'd think that something like that would be in the demo to show off some more of the car stuff. So I don't think it's in the final game as of yet. All they have is what you said, and those don't tell you anything about the cars acceleration.

But you could, if you really, really, really, wanted to know a car's acceleration. Get a stopwatch (yes and actual stopwatch), find a nice straight road (like the one that's in front of your house in the demo), park the car at one end of the road, and see how fast it takes your car to reach 0-60 in such and such time. But I'm not sure you want to go that far into it? You can also then estimate the length in time it takes to reach 0-100, etc., etc.

I was just hoping for a stat so when you are in your garage you could easily see the car with the most acceleration, as that is one of the most important stats in games like this, as it helps you respond to changes faster, and therefore evade cops faster. All the other stats are pretty straight forward, I assume weight is close to how durable the car is and top speed doesn't need an explanation.

I guess I will use the tried and true method of using whichever car looks the fastest, and I have no desire to use the stopwatch method. :P

Haha, downloaded the demo, got in a car (after picking up a copy of playboy :P) and got stopped and ticketed for speeding. It'll probably get more annoying in the full game, but thats pretty hilarious.
I'll probably pick it up at some point, but it'll be a while due to my "No games at more than half the release price" rule.

Yeah, didn't think you'd want to really go that far into it with the stop watch.

But in the full game, you are supposed to be able to tune up the various cars you bring in, so tuning them would increase the Hp, etc. and you could combat cops in cars better, than just a vanilla car? Plus, there's always the Corvette looking car, and Austin-Healey looking car too. Can't remember their in-game names off hand, but they're pretty recognizable if you look up 50s Corvettes and Austin-Healeys. ;)

Wow, you can't complain about the music selection being too small.

Ew, a '58-59 Corvette? Probably not my first choice. I'd much rather have http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/1953-1967-austin-healey-100-and-3000-3.jpg over that, anytime of the week.
Spoiler
I be more British than you that way. :P Mainly because Austin-Healey is a British Car company. ;)

Can you not already customize your car in the demo? I bring my car to the body shop and get basic + sport tuning + best rims for awesome racing fun.

It'd be better than a '58-59 Corvette. I'd rather actually have a '54-55 Corvette, rather a Austin-Healey or '58-59 Corvette. But I'd choose a Austin-Healey over a late 50s Corvette any day.

Yeah, I don't know why I said in the full game. Must have been a slip.

I found this out today, on PC when you are in a car press L to limit your speed, this helps in more urban non-highway areas. It seems to cap the speed at 40 miles per hour, I'm not sure if it is adjustable or not, although I hope you can and I just haven't found it yet, as that would be rather useful.

Does anyone know if there is a way to look around when you are in "first person" view on the car? I've tried a couple of different key combinations and haven't found any that let you look around, I just want the ability to look both ways before coming out of my driveway so I don't damage the car or get a ticket straight away.

The limiter is cool. I make it a habit to look at the control list whenever I play a game. To make sure I am not missing something.
I just move the mouse a bit....wait, nevermind, sorry! I though you were speaking of regular view. I didn't know you could change view while in the vehicle until I tried.

When I move the mouse in the first person car view (the one where you see the hood of the car) my view doesn't change, are you talking about this or something else?

Ah, well do you know if you change what the speed limiter caps you at?

No, you can't. But it will auto-adjust when driving on roads with higher speed limits (highways), from what I've heard.
It actually functions a bit differently from the limiter in the first Mafia. It's really more of a 'mode' now, as it also smoothes out acceleration and (I think) braking.

I wasn't aware that it changed depending on the speed limit of the road, that is cool. I tried using it as a brake, by hitting it if I saw a cop car so I wouldn't have someone chasing me for speeding, and then I just hit the brakes normally going at the same speed, it seems about the same to me. The only difference is it is more controlled so you won't come to a complete stop.

Finally got around to testing the demo, and I must say, the first thing that caught my ears was the cluster F-bomb dialogue. So, I'm giving the game an 'F' on dialogue. Otherwise, seemed interesting enough. Shotgun was a blast yet again, but nothing beats a good ol' tommygun. The cover system was definently improved from the first game, I liked that, although I did have a bit of trouble trying to jump from cover to cover. Still undecided on if I should get it when it comes- demo was too much of an appetizer to allow me to make up my mind. Also, hate timers.

Wow, Kotaku really tore the game up.

I suspect the 'sandbox without toys' bit is easily explained. The first game wasn't really a sandbox either, and I've been warning people about that for a while. The city in the first Mafia was a character in the plot and it was tentatively 'open' to some extent in order to facilitate this. The free ride modes offered some token sandbox elements, but exploration of the city was still really only valuable for it's own sake (as the countryside really shows. There's nothing there but great scenery). It really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that the second game is similar in that regard.

Apparently if you walk on a dead body you leave bloody footprints, I found it amusing that they included that.

To all the negative reviews: If the game will amuse me as much as the demo has it will be worth the money, and given that I am easily amused I don't think that will be a problem.
