Unofficial Mafia II Thread

Better particle effects, destructible environments are more detailed and things like clothing are more fluid and dynamic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik-me8RWEWc, the effects are really nice looking even on medium. It honestly does take something along the lines of a GTX 480 w/ 285 PhysX for decent FPS at a high resolution and PhysX on high. A big hit is clothing though. A lot of folks disable cloth PhysX for every NPC, leaving only Vito with dynamic clothing and about a 15-30 FPS boost.

I can attest to this, I have every setting maxed out, and PhysX on High but only for particle effects and Vito's clothing and it runs like a dream.

My friend just said he was really disappointed with it. $65 for what amounts to a 10 hour game with no multi-player, limited sandbox abilities, and limited replay value since the games best aspect is it's story. Sounds like the definition of a rental.

See that what I don't get.It has a good story so therefore it has replay value.I enjoy playing single player games over and over again.Games like this and Red Dead Redemption have single player worth playing more than once hell even more than 3 times.

If I can play a game for 7 hours straight just single player I don't see it being anywhere close to a rental.

Because knowing exactly what happens is sooooo exciting. If I'm gonna replay a game, it's gotta have great gameplay. I couldn't call the gameplay in Mafia 2 bad, but it's a bit clunky from what I've played in the demo.

I take it your not the type of person who can watch a movie multiple times?

the game's been pretty fun, albeit kinda clunky

but there's one thing about it that's pissing me off to no end
it's the fact that I constantly spin out.
even at reasonable speeds I find myself thinking "oh Jesus not another turn" because turning is proving to be perhaps the most punishing part of the game despite the fact that I'm playing on Simulation and hard mode. Everything else has been a pretty good example of challenge without being hatefully difficult but driving, especially turning is just a damn chore.

Put on speed limiter. Makes handling like 10x better.

I'm mostly referring to missions where you're on a time limit mission making it impossible to use a speed limiter

but even so, I'm finding that even with the speed limiter I'm still feeling like the act of turning is more difficult than it should be. Then again you could argue that it's my own fault given that I'm playing on hard mode with Simulation on. But dammit I swore to myself that I would play this game hardcoe style and so help me God I will :P

just out of curiousity to those who played Mafia I, is the simulation mode in Mafia II similar to the driving in Mafia I? because I know the notorious flaw of Mafia I was the punishing driving mechanics.

I guess I am one of those people who can't justify buying a movie when I know it'd be cheaper to rent it, even 5 or 6 times.

I don't really have a problem with the handling. Haven't spun out once. I'm up to chapter 7 now.
Spoiler
For those of you who are this far, I kind of actually like the summer time more than the winter..and the newer cars are awesome also, what did you think about the jail sequence?
.

I really like the game, too bad it's not worth $60 cause I wont play it more than once.

Have not had to much trouble with driving.Check tomake sure your tires are not shoot out,you will spin out no matter what if that happens.

I liked the jail sequence a lot,in fact I like all of the sequences where you are away.It gives the game more variety when its not the same 3 mission types over and over again.Oh and not sure yet but it might go back to winter.I am on Chapter 11 or something and its late September.

I read the review, which says it's underwhelming.. Im thinking on just leaving this be, and save the money for New Vegas instead.

Don't believe the reviews,it has a great story .Its much more realistic than your GTA or Godfather games.I would suggest renting it at the very least.

Just about, though I suppose Mafia II may be even more unforgiving in that vehicles accelerate faster and reach higher speeds. Cars in Mafia accelerated at such a slow rate that you could just hold down on the gas, but you'll have to do it gradually in Mafia II otherwise you'll spin out. The handbrake was always kinda tricky too. Even turning into the skid at lower speeds would cause you to spin out, and the same can be said for Mafia II most of the time.

But, that's how it goes. They aren't today's cars so Simulation isn't gonna handle like GTA IV's driving. Personally, I love the driving in Mafia and Mafia II and I found the Normal driving mode in II to be even harder to control than Simulation.

So I just beat it,
Spoiler
that is a pretty [censored] up ending.Poor poor Joe.

Overall it is a really good game.Great story to it and plenty of cool features.Much more realistic than other Mob games. If your not into playing games multiple times than I would suggest a rent.Still one of the better games recently released.

indeed

that was a pretty depressing ending :(
but I also completed my own personal goal which was to play on Simulation and hard mode, I died, a lot, but it was fun I'll probably play through this again, only put more emphasis on stuff I didn't do before (like collect an assortment of *ahem* shall I say "illustrious" pictures :P)

I also encountered a weird glitch though. It was bizarre, the game spans from 1945 to 1955 but when it should've transistioned to 1955 it didn't and while it showed the months change or some reason it was stuck in 1951, I know this because you go through the month of September in both 1951 and 1955 which was kinda funny :P

I hate waking up to fire in the night. Staying at an old friend's house is depressing and creepy.
