Unofficial Mafia II Thread

The demo was alright. I felt like the shooting (well, all aiming) was really kind of clunky. It didn't feel nearly as crisp as I like it to be.

I'm having so much fun with this demo :twirl:

The police are lousy shots, though:

On a side note, I got $800 robbing that gun store, along with the guns and ammo

Perhaps, but I go from 60-120 FPS (with PhysX/Vsync off) to ~10-15 average with Vsync on, I don't believe that's correct. I've been able to run every other game I own with Vsync on and that's never happened before. I've also seen reports of the same thing on various PC forums I frequent.

Use D3DOverrider to force triple buffering in the application. The utility can be found in the RivaTuner package. This is assuming the game doesn't already have a triple buffering solution implemented, of course.

I liked the demo. It was fun how you could shove a stranger and he would fight back until the cops arrested both of you. I would, of course, resist arrest and make a run for it.

I pulled out my gun on a gangster so I started a fight and the cop came. Luckily, I broke from the fight and the cop went after the black guy. The black guy ran and the cop just shot him dead :sadvaultboy:. I love the sounds if tge guns and my favorite part was when I got a Tommy gun from the cops I escaped then some people were having a picnic. They got lit up. Then another time, two cops ran at me and lit me the [censored] up.

http://physxinfo.com/news/3628/mafia-ii-demo-tweaking-physx-performance/ a short list of tweaks you can do to enable PhysX and still get decent framerates.

Edit- I just disabled the clothing for everyone but Vito and my framerates went from 20ish to a very playable 40+ with PhysX set to medium.

Not sure why but I'm getting a measly 25 fps with no aa or vsync on. Everything else is maxed out.

Anyone else?

Just played through the whole demo there and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not sure about the consoles, but the PC version looks magnificent. The videos I had seen before really didn't do it justice. I love the gunplay as well, the weapons feel nice and meaty which is always a good thing. I'm sold on the game now, I'll probably buy it when it comes out in a couple of weeks time.

One of the things that I like the most so far are NPC physics. I don't think I've seen a single person that wasn't dead go ragdoll. Shoot someone in the leg while they're running and they trip, or shoot 'em in the head and they just fall over, limbs don't freak out and bend in awkward ways like so many ragdoll physics do, and it doesn't appear as if gravity simply stops affecting them once they're dead either.

Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough, but I'm very impressed with the little details so far.

I think all the attention to the little details is what really sold then game to me.

Pretty good. Just wish the camera wasn't so close to your head though.

yes, it's very close

and lemme tell you guys

I now know why I NEVER go to any other forum other than BGSF
the MII forum is just INFESTED with foaming at the mouth [censored] who're just [censored]ing and moaning about the demo being a complete mess and judging the overall game on what they've seen in the demo so far.

it ain't /b/ but hot damn do those guys like to troll :( really glad I never got an account there

the demo for me is good, but I feel there're some issues that need to be worked out
does anyone else feel that Vito controls too quickly? I find that the character model is rather bulky and overly responsive.
I have some other gripes too, but I'm worried to express though because I think I picked these gripes up from the foamers at the MII boards :P

It's not the same designer as mafia 1 right? If so, it's just natural to hate on it. Remember NMA on fallout 3?

I wasn't even considering purchasing Mafia 2, but after the demo I think I just might. It is a lot of fun.

actually it is

90% of Mafia II's development team worked on Mafia I
At the very least one of the head producers of Mafia Ii was the head of development for Mafia I

the company that made Mafia I was bought out by 2K, but they started a sequel immediately after the release of Mafia I which 2K offered to fund

Go on, tell us what you think, we won't hold it against you. I'd rather avoid wading through the official forums. :P

Having played the demo further, there are a few niggles I've noticed as well... but I think I may just have been spoiled by years of GTA. Still seems like it's going to be epic fun to play.

It is the same developer (Illusion Softworks) although they've since been bought by 2K and now go by the name 2K Czech.

edit: ninja'd...

Hmmm, I don't know why I had it in my head that it was different designers. Maybe I was confusing it with the new gothic game.

well
aside from the movement and camera

I also think the guns don't handle like I honestly feel they should (colt 1911 was great, thought that was perfect, same with the pump action) but the .38 Caliber and Thompson seemed too soft to me. Thompson had barely any recoil and .38 caliber seemed too weak to me.
I also found the AI to be a bit dim, enemies were okay, but the pedestrian AI did some weird glitchy stuff like get caught on one another and stand blindly in the road and get run over.

those I think I'm being a bit harsh on, but there's things from the forums that I KNOW are just too much
they complained that the 360 version was too choppy (I play 360 and it seemed fine to me)
complained the PS3 had no grass even though it was stated that was removed in the demo to save memory, but would be in the final game (Oh dear God you won't believe how obsessed with GRASS the Mafia II forum is O.o)
one guy wouldn't shut up about Anti-Aliasing
At the Mafia II forum it ultimately boiled to a "lol PC is betr tan conzolz" and "lol no teh conzolz r betr" flamewar

I actually thought it was funny how immature they were over there. They said that they were more mature because they liked a game that wasn't like Halo or MW2 and in turn felt they were superior, but when the demo came out, they became the same brats I'd've seen on a typical X-box Live match in Halo or MW2

Yeah, I noticed a few AI oddities too, though they tend to crop up in most games. I shoved a person in the street, and a cop car swerved around with its sirens blazing, mowing down rows of pedestrians, only to tell me to "break it up" before moving on.

Also, it may just be the old-school cars, but driving around at speed is proving to be quite hazardous. What I wouldn't give for an airbag! :P

Still, Mafia has always been about a directed, cinematic experience, and as long as that much remains intact in the sequel, any improvements to the open-world aspect are welcome.

I like that aspect of the cars, cars back then did handle like they do in the game

and, just like in real life, driving at an insane speed on a public street is going to be extremely dangerous, and it was even MORE dangerous back then before they had airbags and seatbelts (yes folks, the seatbelt didn't come around until the mid 60s)

in fact if the game REALLY followed the laws of physics Vito would fly out the windshield the first time he violently smashed into anything
I think the cars handle great in simulation mode

Like in GTA IV? Damn, I remember purposely crashing into oncomming traffic at 150mph just to watch my guy fly 50ft into the air. :lmao:

Man, I hit a truck in the on-coming lane at about 80 and got wiped out instantly. That was funny. :D

I like the little things from the first one. Like if you were speeding the cops would chase you. Or if you drove through a red light. Now I can pass a cop car at 108 mph and as long as I don't hit anyone I am fine.

That's not true. The problem is that the police now need some time to notice you. If you go really fast you tend to be out of their sight before the bar fills up. This is still really silly, obviously, but that bug aside the police will still try to fine you for speeding.
