Unofficial Minecraft Discussion III

Greetings all and welcome to the..

Unofficial Minecraft Discussion Thread

A central place to post all your Minecraft related thoughts, ideas and questions within the BGSF. Here you will also find all the details for the BGSF Minecraft server, and how to get it (as well as hamachi) running.

Rules
  • When posting in the thread abide all global forum rules
  • Do not post anything regarding mods/texture packs of an advlt nature or incite griefing
  • Do not post any direct links to downloads
  • Within the server do not destroy other persons property in any form with intent
  • Do not build your constructions unreasonably close to the buildings of others - the game is 8* the surface area of the earth so use that space
  • Do not use loads of dynamite in one go, if you have dynamite (which you can get from careful killing of creepers with fire) only use a few blocks at a time - huge portions can cause major serverside instability and results in a known bug
  • Do not create random fires - such as setting trees on fire either to light an area or to light a path. Beacons and such are fine but fire can spread in rather strange ways.
  • Do not question the in server mods - if an OP tells you to stop doing something, you stop
  • Using the BGSF Minecraft Server Hamachi network for anything other than Minecraft is not acceptable - use another network if you must.
  • Never - no matter how sad or rejected he looks - open the door to a creeper

What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a creative sandbox game centered around exploration and survival; exploring and gathering resources allows you to protect yourself against a variety of beasties that hunt you down during the night. The creative sandbox elements of the game fuel your want to survive and gather, which in turn allow you to build many wonderful creations. Basic fluid physics also provide interesting means of creating basic machines.

Server Details
As the BGSF is the center of all good in the gaming world, we have appropriately set up a server - this server is accessible via a Hamachi network (this is to avoid port forwarding problems, as well as to provide complete transparency as to who can connect to the server). Below you shall find details on how to connect to the server, as well as how to set up Hamachi.

Hamachi is a neat and free networking tool that creates a virtual local network, allowing gaming communities to connect to servers with minimal port related problems - it also allows the network admin to selectively admit people to the network, greatly reducing the chance of griefers destroying our server. No registration is required; all one has to do is download the hamachi client for free. https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi2/download.aspx. Download the unmanaged client and install. Once Hamachi is installed and started you will notice 3 tabs at the top of its GUI. Click the 'Network' tab and then 'Join an existing network'. When presented with the connection dialogue enter the username and password below. You will not be admitted immediately - all new users must be manually accepted.

A note for Mac users: You can run both Minecraft and Hamachi on OSX, however I am unable to provide a guide as to how to use Hamachi. To my knowledge it is currently in a beta state for OS' other than windows, without full GUI functionality.

Hamachi Details:
Network Name: BGSF Minecraft | BGSF Minecraft #2 (incase the first is full)
Password: Creeper!

Server Details:
Server is down whilst we plan something more... interesting ;)
IP: 5.140.149.202
Port: 25565

Server OPs: (these persons can ban, teleport (if you are bugged in some strange way) and refund items lost to the furnace bug)
Wampbit
SuperPete (Monkey Hybrid)

To connect to the server start up Minecraft, click on multiplayer, and enter the IP and port in the input box in the format: "IP : Port". You will fail to connect once or twice before entering the server for the first time - this is an unsolved server bug and will hopefully be fixed soon. Only contact me for support if you have tried disabling your security system/firewall as well as made multiple attempts at joining. If you have I shall try and troubleshoot the problem as soon as I can. You will only be able to connect to the server if you are part of the Hamachi network!

The Server instability that was experienced yesterday seems to have been largely fixed - after reading around Notch and his silly little mini-update has caused a lot of new bugs!

Server is a bit... quiet at the moment :P

I'm having trouble placing lava - The first two bits are staying in place, but after that everything else disappears.

Yes because I had to go school :D And I got some partying to do later today.
But I look if I have time to come by later.

Edit - Yes lava is bugged, I would have used it in my moat if it worked.

Multiplayer server has been pretty quiet today, so I'm thinking of starting a new single player map with the intent of spending as much of my time as possible underground. I'll tunnel into the first hill I come up to and only resurface for wood and sand. Should be fun.

Alright, the multiplayer server has been feeling all too sedate today. Everyone's done their own little (big) thing, so to boost activity again I propose a group project. Something that doesn't involve lots of lava, water, TNT, minecarts, or anything else that screws up the server. Any ideas?

Everyone digs down to bedrock, then we start a race mining horizontally. Whoever hits lava first wins.

How about building a massive, massive, massive, massive castle, with endless winding corridors and secret underground dungeons and passageways? :3

I agree completely with Undone - we are reaching a point of minecraftian stagnation, and something must be done to give everyone something to do again! New projects and possibly a new world is in order! I am currently in the process of forming a plan with Undone, and shall get back to you all with a proposal a bit later ;).

I was thinking of a castle with a bunch of secret doors and traps. Or maybe the Imperial City? :hehe:

Well, I can't be online all the time.
But as long as the old map is saved I'm ok with new world.

Some huge castle would be nice, but not Imperial City.

Does anyone else find minecarts to be really stupid. I wasted like 50 steel to make a cart and tracks and, nothing worked. Carts would randomly fly off and the powered ones went in the wrong direction. It really make me mad...

yup, because the powered cart goes away from the direction you clicked it from and because you can't hook 2 carts together you can't ride them, so i wasn't happy with all the iron i wasted that day, and in still haven't seen that much iron on single player since that day

Wow. So I was mining underground trying to create a lava river when all of a sudden a zombie knocks me into the lava...

So that's it? I have to start over?

unless it was survival [i think], you get to respawn, if your lucky all your stuff wasn't dropped in the lava (it sort of explodes around your corpse)

Click Respawn and you'll start at your spawn point. Everything you've done is still there. Think deaths in the Lego games is you've played one. You drop your items too when you die but if your close enough to the spawn point you can reclaim them.

Edit: Typo

There is a free version but it's like having a stick compared to a chainsaw. Also the paid version will include every new version, patch, add-ons and/or expansions of the future for free. And that's a lot for 9.95 Euros. (12.92 USD)

It is pretty hard to make good looking round shapes. If we need to do something from TES, I would rather build Vivec.

True. And yes, Vivec would be awesome, I like that idea much better. We could all have our own canton. And a Ministry of Truth in the sky. :P

I can make a pretty screenshot of all the cantons at once with MGE...
