Unofficial Minecraft Discussion II

Greetings all and welcome to the..

Unofficial Minecraft Discussion Thread

A central place to post all your Minecraft related thoughts, ideas and questions within the BGSF. Here you will also find all the details for the BGSF Minecraft server, and how to get it (as well as hamachi) running.

Rules
  • When posting in the thread abide all global forum rules
  • Do not post anything regarding mods/texture packs of an advlt nature or incite griefing
  • Do not post any direct links to downloads
  • Within the server do not destroy other persons property in any form with intent
  • Do not build your constructions unreasonably close to the buildings of others - the game is 8* the surface area of the earth so use that space
  • Do not use loads of dynamite in one go, if you have dynamite (which you can get from careful killing of creepers with fire) only use a few blocks at a time - huge portions can cause major serverside instability and results in a known bug
  • Do not create random fires - such as setting trees on fire either to light an area or to light a path. Beacons and such are fine but fire can spread in rather strange ways.
  • Do not question the in server mods - if an OP tells you to stop doing something, you stop
  • Using the BGSF Minecraft Server Hamachi network for anything other than Minecraft is not acceptable - use another network if you must.
  • Never - no matter how sad or rejected he looks - open the door to a creeper

What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a creative sandbox game centered around exploration and survival; exploring and gathering resources allows you to protect yourself against a variety of beasties that hunt you down during the night. The creative sandbox elements of the game fuel your want to survive and gather, which in turn allow you to build many wonderful creations. Basic fluid physics also provide interesting means of creating basic machines.

Server Details
As the BGSF is the center of all good in the gaming world, we have appropriately set up a server - this server is accessible via a Hamachi network (this is to avoid port forwarding problems, as well as to provide complete transparency as to who can connect to the server). Below you shall find details on how to connect to the server, as well as how to set up Hamachi.

Hamachi is a neat and free networking tool that creates a virtual local network, allowing gaming communities to connect to servers with minimal port related problems - it also allows the network admin to selectively admit people to the network, greatly reducing the chance of griefers destroying our server. No registration is required; all one has to do is download the hamachi client for free. https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi2/download.aspx. Download the unmanaged client and install. Once Hamachi is installed and started you will notice 3 tabs at the top of its GUI. Click the 'Network' tab and then 'Join an existing network'. When presented with the connection dialogue enter the username and password below. You will not be admitted immediately - all new users must be manually accepted.

A note for Mac users: You can run both Minecraft and Hamachi on OSX, however I am unable to provide a guide as to how to use Hamachi. To my knowledge it is currently in a beta state for OS' other than windows, without full GUI functionality.

Hamachi Details:
Network Name: BGSF Minecraft | BGSF Minecraft #2 (incase the first is full)
Password: Creeper!

Server Details:
IP: 5.140.149.202
Port: 25565

Server OPs: (these persons can ban, teleport (if you are bugged in some strange way) and refund items lost to the furnace bug)
Wampbit
SuperPete (Monkey Hybrid)

To connect to the server start up Minecraft, click on multiplayer, and enter the IP and port in the input box in the format: "IP : Port". You will fail to connect once or twice before entering the server for the first time - this is an unsolved server bug and will hopefully be fixed soon. Only contact me for support if you have tried disabling your security system/firewall as well as made multiple attempts at joining. If you have I shall try and troubleshoot the problem as soon as I can. You will only be able to connect to the server if you are part of the Hamachi network!

Nice OP Wampbit. The server instructions are pretty straightforward too, this will make it easier for BGSF Miners to join! yay! So how many people does your server handle? The Hamachi website says a max of 16 players.

I'm not entirely sure as of yet - the most we've had so far is 6 players and that was fine. It's always possible to get around the Hamachi player limit by creating a second network and having people join that, however I'm not sure where my bandwidth will bottleneck.

Hopefully we don't end up crashing your whole system :)

BTW, does Minecraft have a chatbox in MP, or have you guys been chatting a different way? I stated in the last thread that when Notch gets SMP working correctly I might get a vent server, it would make it easier to communicate.

I'm getting seriously irritated with my single player. There's a zombie spawn point somewhere in my quarry, but I never see them coming until they're right on me. I backed up against a wall then went into my inventory to make some torches and immediately got slaughtered.

Yeah it does.

I don't know if it's the same in the paid version as the free version, but server admins and mods can place indestructible blocks. Could be useful in the long run.

Ah, so instead of banning people you could also lock them in a prison of boxes? :P

You'd have to wait until they go afk...
Unless you can find where they set their spawn.

As soon as I am tempted out of singleplayer mode, I'll be joining you guys in Multiplayer. My username will be the same, just for the sake of clarity. Probably not going to be playing multiplayer for a week or two though, too many things I want to do in singleplayer first ha ha.

So far, I am gathering glass to begin building a very tall crystal tower (how high can you go in the game?), as well as hunting down Creeper's during the night. Need the gunpowder off of them for TNT. Going to be levelling a few montains near my area, so the TNT will likely help. If I use a flintlock on the TNT, will it detonate right away? Or will I have time to get away?

Is there anyway to prevent water from draining after a few squares? I built a nice little beach-front property and was going to construct an interior pool. I cut a channel through my foundation to the ocean outside, assuming the water would fill to the same level as it was outside. Instead it runs in about six or seven spaces and then disappears.

You can go pretty high. I remember on one of the servers I used to play in the spawnpoint was at the skybox and if you fell you'd fall for a good 20 seconds before hitting the very bottom of the map.

Right - saving seems to be working again - I am opening the server again but I make no guarantees that anything will be preserved - but hopefully it will!

I'm having the same problem with my moat. Not found a solution yet.

I'm going to bash on with my single player for a bit before jumping back into multi. Let me know if the save bug is persisting.

Place multiple buckets of water in an area (not the same block). If you have a 3x3 Square, place water in each corner. As your square gets bigger, you'll need more buckets. In a 5x5 square you'll need buckets for each corner and in the middles of each side.

^ Or something like that.

What you have to do is place a layer of dirt in your moat, so as to make it one block deep, and then fill each square up with a bucket of water. Then you can just remove that layer of dirt and you have a nice deep moat.

Sweet. I'm gonna dig a nice moat that leads into a holding cell with a glass wall so I can watch the zombies.

Can you pick up lava with a bucket? I am determined to make a lava moat!

You can, at least in SP, but it's buggy to say the least.
