Wow, hard mode is HARD. I was having a pretty easy time for the first couple nights, then out of nowhere on my 3rd night there were at LEAST 10 skeletons, plus 2 or 3 creepers. The twanging from their bows was non-stop and I had to take off my headphones to remain sane.

I found an underground lava-lake and a waterfall, so I turned the entire thing into obsidian. Now I just need to get to work on making an obsidian fortress!

Can obsidian withstand a creeper blast, or should I make a layer of stone on the outside?

The only thing that can break obsidian is a diamond pick. TNT won't even scratch it.

It's AWESOME too. I think the monster spawn rate has been upped quite a bit recently. I never remember this many enemies being around, and now that there are I can't imagine how boring it was before without them.

I play on hard and very rarely find monsters outside at night, the key is torches which block them from spawning. My real problem is the monsters underground because they've already spawned and there is generally quite a few of them in one spot. I just died to some when I accidentally collapsed part of my mine :( I'll probably lose that stuff too :(

But then I wouldn't have three creepers hiding outside my front door every morning to greet me! :o

There was a one page article about MineCraft in the Toronto newspaper today!

http://www.torontosun.com/entertainment/videogames/2010/10/01/15546896.html

I keep getting some wacky runtime error everytime I try to start the game up. I believe its because of my graphics card drivers. I don't think I updated them after I reinstalled my OS...

Fortress expansion going great. 120 iron ore crafted into continental track way. Only 20% done and at tower outpost 1, and I have to step up mining production to find more iron. Underwater dock complete, and fanghorn forest is slowly being completed. Now it faces two sides of my mountain, and one of which is so vast and dark the sun doesn't shine. New Project world tree in the center of the forest. Make a gigantic tree, and progress is going good on that. Exploring large cavern, and I mean large. Over 250+ torches and going with no end in sight. Larger than my thus far completed trans continental track way. Leveling of mountain 1 complete, and leveling of mountain 2 slowed due to me expanding down and inside my fortress. Great lighthouse no longer sufficient to guide me home safely, and am setting up a message system using pillars to direct my way home. Expansion via offshoot mini towers ineffective and time consuming. Leveling of the forest two towers down the line nearly complete and the lonely hill which had once a thriving forest is now truly alone amidst a barren plain. Overall progress is sporadic here and there based on whims. The only thing not started is the http://elblogdeodracir.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/argonath.jpg far to the west. Other than preliminary scouting it too far away for me to reach. Setting up of secondary base considered, but deemed time inefficient. If the railroad is complete it provides a ready made gateway to expand upon even further. Not to mention resources mined along the tracks could be used to boost production of the Argonath. Overall progressing well.

Edit
Progress Addendum 1: Main gate is now fully complete, and the only way up is the great road elevated above the surface world. The mountains to the side of the road must be leveled on each side for it to remain an effective deterrent. One side (aka Mountain "2") is half way to being complete. Access tot he great road granted via the great guard tower. This was necessary to secure the fortress against further creeper siege. Threat level is negligible and I have not seen an enemy anywhere near my entrances in weeks let alone get in and cause havoc.

Right now, there are two groups of gamers in the world: Those who haven't yet heard of Minecraft, and those who are hopelessly, helplessly addicted to it.

Is your base near your spawn point? If so, just use a compass :P And you need to upload that map for us when you're done!

What's the trick to get never ending fire? I'm trying to make a pit surrounding my castle that has a bottom of fire, but I can never get it to burn forever like some people can.

Their technical support is normally great, you just need to find someone that can speak english/has a clue about networking. But the speed is worth it all :D

My last lecture for today finished at 16:00. It could be up to an hour before I'm home. Once I get back I'll start to set up the server and have a look at what I need to do (I expect the last $5 is there now ;) ) - and once that's sorted I'll alert all of you and get the world file from undone - then we should be dedicated!

Yeah, we'll get the other $5 easy. The server is currently running from my computer (though no one is on just now), which you can get on by joining the Hamachi group BGSF Minecraft #4 with the password "Creeper!", then joining the IP address it gives for me. The new server should be online in ~4 hours.

I don't understand all that network stuff, so when the server goes up and I get home some one may have to help me. I used to setup I.P's for other games but that has been years ago.

I need to read over the OP again, I am guessing we are going to build (or admin place) a town that is "safe" and has "land plots"

I think it would be fun to have times where we all play and maybe have defenders and attackers with a castle or something?

Just a thought.
