Place the torches on the ground by the base of the sapling.

I'll warn you now, even this didn't work for me. The trees would not grow leaves near the torches and whenever I would try to go near the trees my game would glitch.

Nami88, that's what I'm doing, and it's still not working well. I have three trees now, instead of 2. Which is nice.

I have a combined light level in this area of 170 or so. :)
I think I could fuel the sun with the amount of light energy put off in this room. :)

Oh, well, I'm now working on the checkerboard pattern, or chessboard, if you want to use that.
Torch, then a sapling, then a torch, etc.

Picture is worth a thousand words or so. So, what do you think about this?

Far too close together I think. You want to allow a 3x3 area for the trees to grow in, with at least a 4 block gap above.

Really? That's odd. They seem to be growing nicely now. In fact, the trees seemed to grow faster with a checkerboard pattern layout.

I now how 8 trees. :)

Also, there's nothing on the Wiki about requiring them space like that, just a 4 tile clearance.
In fact, several of my trees are fused together, to make a 2x2 tree, and a few other ones around it.

At least my tree problems are over now.

You really need to use a texture pack! :P

Also, new biomes video is up on the blog. Looks great!

Trees can be placed next to each other, the only requirement is they need 4 spaces above the sapling.

Are you Notch? Nobody knows exactly what will or will not be in the update yet.

He said that it wasn't on the top of his "to do list" and that he wasn't going to promise it.
And I'm pretty saplings need room around it to grow.

It's already been proven that they don't. I saw a whole thread where someone did extensive experiments, and the wiki page has proof.

From the technical demo Notch posted about biomes I have at least one thing to say:

They need to be BIGGER. A desert should be a desert and not a beach, etc etc.

Of course I realize that the video is just a showcase.

I want to find a frozen wasteland with a high mountain ridges and build.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angband

He said himself they will be increased in size. I think he made them that small to showcase how they change. If they were as large as he wants them it might have used up too much time in the video. He more or less gave you a proof of concept he is working on it. Actual numbers to be finalized.

Actually he said that it was on top of his to-do list and it would arrive with the halloween update or soon after.

The update won't break any saves.

But it also won't change the landscape we've explored so far to take biomes into account. So on our map there's going to be one massive single biome, with smaller more interesting biomes around it. :P

We don't know how large the biomes will be yet

The video Notch posted last night was still just a development version, he said they would be a lot larger.

I must confer with the wise ones that are wise but not as wise as I :P. Undone and Wamp. I vote yes, as long as your friends don't mess stuff up. We had that problem a few weeks ago. Forumer invites friend, friend invites friend, friends friend invites friend and than proceeds to hack and grief the server to hell.

One chance... one chance is all they get.

Also a note to everyone:

STOP EXPLORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We want the biomes as close to Torhemn as possible.

We don't even know how to hack, we're just looking for a decent server. We spend about an hour and a half last night joining all the public servers, looking for a decent one.... but they all either lose connection or crash after 5 minutes.

We'll probably be on later, or we may just wait till the 31st update if SMP is really that buggy. D:

Sadly, most of the texture packs I've seen are ones I'd rather not use.
One of them is so ugly that I cringe every time I see it.

Also, I wish I could make a Ygdrassil tree. :)
That's my name for random trees I find that are A. huge and b. have tons of wood and leaves. Like, 30-40 blocks in a tree, and the leaf span is at least 12 blocks wide. :)

And yeah, it's a reference to Norse Mythology.

These are actually HD textures, so things aren't pixellated from a few blocks away.
