Unofficial Minecraft Discussion 37

Well, we've discovered a problem.

Apparently, when one moves a linked Nether portal, it doesn't like it.

So when Key decided he wanted his Nether portal moved, and LSO moved it, it created a problem. Resulting in a Nether portal being generated in Simpson's mines. I removed it, but when I placed a new nether portal, went through, and came back... guess where I was, and what was back? Yep, Nether Portal in Simpson's mines.

If any of the mods, admins, or anybody with Nether portal experience could fix this, please, do so. I have no clue how to manipulate this.

YEah, portals are wacky. Even if you get a good system for predicting where your portals will open in real space or the nether, their seems to be all sorts of bugs associated with portal formation and portal linking. two real space portals linked to one nether world portal, that kind of thing are common.

I just saw on Facebook that Notch released 1.5 beta. Should I update, or should I put it off until the servers update with it?

No - I PM'd him near the start of the 24 hours and didn't hear a reply. I think he's moved on - if he comes back to the thread I would suggest adding him to the end of the order, perhaps.

I just read the PM feel free to add me to the end of the list

It'll be a while before the server updates I think. If you can tolerate single player then go for it. If not, you should probably just wait until the server is 1.5.

I just read the wiki page on the detector rail, and it has me stoked. I know exactly what I'm doing with my time in the share map this round - I'm gonna reposition the Morrowind theme noteblocks to play automatically on a cart ride to the mining/forestry operation - and in reverse on the way back! That'll be awesome. Now, the real question is - aboveground or underground?

That probly wont be for at least 3-5 days. We need to wait for a lot of our protection plugins to be updated.

It appears that there are less than 10 achievements. I'm assuming they'll add more during the update.

Fixing all of my ladders was a pain... I needed a full 64 stack on the nose in order to patch up all the ladder spaces that I had left. I've never regretted that mineshaft down to the center of the earth more. D:

On the plus side, however, ladders now come in packs of two. More importantly however... The rain is freaking awesome! I'm currently just standing on the top of one of my towers, just enjoying the light roar and splendor of it. Strange how such a simple-graphic game can bring me the same peaceful satisfaction that real rain gives me.

Yeah, those are just the test achievements that were in 1.4, but not active yet. There's more stuff to come.

What else could I post... Oh yeah: Powered rails are awesome. Finally I can do something with all that gold.

Yeah, it's a good idea not to have too many achievements just yet. Start us out easy with a nice reachable target, then keep adding more achievements as new beta releases happen to quench our thirst for more adventures. I'd expect by 11/11/11 there will be quite a few (2-3 dozen, perhaps?).

Should be adequate. They still need to create those dragons we were promised. Ultimate achievement, since it would likely need diamond or even the probable obsidian gear. ^_^

Did they change the ladder so you can't do every other one is a block with a ladder now? If so how are you supposed to put torches?

I am hoping that the Mojang crew go ahead with something similar to the Aether suggestion from the Minecraft forums. It seems to make sense to me that killing this dragon should be something you work up to, and that goes in steps. To simply go to the Nether and slay a dragon seems like a bit too short a quest. If it was instead:

-Do all the steps to get to the Nether.
-Get to the Nether, harvest lightstone
-Build a lightstone gate and get to the Aether

-then, either:
-Find a dragon spawner in the Aether and defeat the dragon, or
-Find some sort of resource that makes yet another gate (or modifies the obsidian gate you already have) to get to a "lower" plane of the Nether, where the dragon resides.

...Or something similar. The possibilities are tantalizing.

I honestly can't play Minecraft anymore. It black screens constantly. I haven't been able to get it to run 10 minutes at a time after the update :(

What fixed mine was installing both 32 and 64bit versions of Java on my machine.

Also, something for the OP.

I managed to take my netbook to a wifi hot spot to download the update.
When I went to play offline at home it reverted to version 1.4

What gives?!

That's possible? How would one do that? Wouldn't it cause other problems?

I used to get that until I switched my render distance to normal. When it was on far I would have the same problem as you.

In other news I will have to go hunting for a new texture pack as the ones I have now make the side of grass blocks look like dark green glowstone, what a wierd glitch.

Hey all, been a while since I've been to the forums, saw a Minecraft discussion and just want to see what people are working on.
Here's a link to a gallery from my Steam screenshots showing what I've been doing (it'll be updated everyday).
