What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a creative sandbox game centered around exploration and survival; exploring and gathering resources allows you to protect yourself against a variety of beasties that hunt you down during the night. The creative sandbox elements of the game fuel your want to survive and gather, which in turn allow you to build many wonderful creations. Basic fluid physics also provide interesting means of creating basic machines. The multiplayer is very similar to the single-player, just with more people.

I've recently started making Minecraft videos, so far http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U_GRruTJgc&feature=channel_video_title is my favorite. Also on the topic of the server it's starting to look like we'll have 1.6 before we even get 1.5. <_<

I explained this in the tail end of the last thread. Tank is sick in bed and will update it asap.

Updating can take hours, at best. That is if we have to rewrite all of the config files, which is no easy task. Re-writing config files is common with big updates.

Why don't I do it?

I don't know what all is changed. If I have to rewrite a config files I'll have to start from scratch and then find a java code parser to make it work correctly. Even then it is not a guarantee. It is best to wait for Tank as he knows exactly what he is doing.

Really? That's quite unfortunate. I'll dig up the old list, but I believe it's the fishy wanderer's turn.

Also, mrcrazy_monkey will be taking time away from the share until mid-May. Perhaps 1, perhaps 2 turns.

Question and Answer

Q: What is this share map thing?
A: A Minecraft share map is a singleplayer map that one person plays at a time. They have a set amount of time to play it, and when they're done, they upload the map for the next player in the queue. Rinse and repeat. That way, you have a single world with a shared creative vision without the multiplayer.

Q: How long will I get the map for?
A: When you come here to download the map, make a post saying you've got it. Then go edit. You have 48 hours from the time of your post to work your magic and upload the map, then PM the next person in line.

Q: What if I'm not ready for it?
A: You have 24 hours from the time the person before you uploaded to acknowledge you've got the map. If you know your upcoming turn won't be good for you, post ahead of time and you can be bumped down the queue. If that happens during your turn, you can have the map again in the next rotation - just upload what you've already done, if any.

Q: Are there any special rules?
A: Not really, other than don't be a dink. If you do, we'll just revert to a previous save and bar you from the rotation. The only big rule we ask is to please play on 'Peaceful' because we wish to preserve the built structures. Other than that, simple etiquette takes over. If you use things, try to replace some or all of it. Leave resources for the next player. Don't deliberately explore beyond the boundaries of the map (you can use F3 to see) since it'll bloat the world file size. Don't destroy their creations (at least, not without asking), even if they don't meet your standards.

Q: How can I download/upload the map?
When you download the map, unzip the save to your %appdata%/.minecraft folder, change the name of the folder (adding 1 to the round or session as appropriate), then start the game up. For uploading, zip the folder and upload the zip file to a file hosting service of your choice. There's lots out there, like http://www.megaupload.com/ for instance.

Q: Can I be a part of this?
A: Of course. Just post in this thread that you want to join, and you'll be added to the end of the queue.

Also, Oh god, I fell into a giant hole about halfway down the world, I forgot to bring wood, and my pickaxe is near dead. I'm so screwed ;-;

Mr. E, I'd like to join the shared map group.

Just a fair warning I tend to make complex mine cart stations.

It's not uncommon to find large clumps of dirt underground. If you can dig out enough you can use it to make a stairway up.

I swear, ever since powered rails were added my primary goal now is to make a 100 mile long roller coaster. That's going to take a lot of gold.

BTW, just in case you've been using the method I've been using of pushing the cart to gain momentum then jumping in, I found out that if you add a button (button, not a lever) two blocks away from a powered rail, you can use that as a sort of launch button.

Since there isn't much difference between the old map and a map of Webster's save, I think we can just keep using the map we already have for this round. I'm sure by the time the next round begins it'll have changed more.

You can take my spot if you like, RW. I'm not really gonna have much time to be working on the map.

That's what I do, except I start on an incline as well to give an even greater boost. Since they added powered rails, I've actually made use of minecarts for transportation. I made a new base of operations about a kilometer away (which is a pretty far walk!), and connected it via rails. The long walk became a nice and cozy 3 minute ride, I just hate when mobs get on the tracks. I try and shoot them off in time but it doesn't always work <_< I might invest time/wood into fencing the tracks in, or to elevate them all so mobs can't get on it. I'm sure they'll find a way to circumvent it either way I go though.

I have a floating railway. The key in keeping mobs off is to not let grass (which spawns passive mobs) spread to the rails, and also line the track with some torches (to keep the hostile mobs away).

I get major lag spikes whenever I'm walking around in the weather, but I'm fine if I'm in a cave during it.

Eh, have to live with it I guess.

Speaking of weather, has anyone noticed it rains underwater? I've been building a "Rapture"-like city on a server with some friends and we've noticed for all of us while working underwater rain still falls around us.

I get a lot of lag when it starts raining but after a couple of seconds it goes away. I think it's calculating which tiles get rain and which tiles don't. It needs some optimization so it's not calculating everything all in one frame.

Trippy. Between the Big Daddies, splicers, and backstabbers murdering you the rain is behaving like the water is air. At least you'll have something besides gravity to tell you what direction is up.
