What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a creative sandbox game centered around exploration and survival; exploring and gathering resources allows you to protect yourself against a variety of beasties that hunt you down during the night. The creative sandbox elements of the game fuel your want to survive and gather, which in turn allow you to build many wonderful creations. Basic fluid physics also provide interesting means of creating basic machines.

There have been several cases of griefing, and everytime someone would check the logs, but so far has anyone been caught at all? I don't feel like starting anything big if there's still a griefer (or multiple) running around getting away with it every time.

So anyway, as I was saying, how's multiplayer? Is it fun? I've heard that it's a striped down version of singleplayer survival.

Ah, two hours of work and 25% of one wall is done. Well the skeletal frame for one. I suspect it will take me about 3 more days for the one wall, and then for the four others that will be up to 17 days putting in about 2.5 hours each day of work. Then my project will be.... 10% completed. Hahaha. It's a really epic structure I'm making.

It lacks a few things from singleplayer, most noticably damage (you're invincible), but building things with other people or just walking in a world where not everything is either natural or built by yourself is nice.

It lacks the actual survival aspects for now.

Ah, well that's kind of disappointing, but I assume that Notch will add new features when the game gets to beta.

I feel like trying out multiplayer. My username is, what else, SimpsonFly. Send me the IP and I'll join up.

Ok well honestly I would like all this griefing is becoming a bit crazy and before anyone does anything really stupid, like what I did. I'll try to stop it by telling what I did.
First I destroyed the legions base south of Imperium/ snow castle. I however didnt place any adminium (only the small amount of obsidian), I know it looks like I placed the adminium since I do have some and I did destroy the outpost. But I'm sa like my floor. I also didnt do any flooding.
Secondly I griefed ironclad trying to stop its progess trying to stop the construction of it in the defense of New Montreal, and because it looks really ugly.

Why I did this? First somebody stole all the gold blocks I used as decoration. I'm ok with that. Then somebody wiped out my entire roof made out of iron. I understand that some people need iron, so I would've been fine if somebody took 1 or 2, but all 20 ish of them? Then i went to go grab the some snow or whatever to replace it to find out that somebody destroyed the road and the flooded the frozen lake. Then I found out that somebody griefed the Imperium/snow castle (by flooding the lower level) and destroyed the snow blocks that I needed. This was the last straw so I took out the legion outpost. Was it justified? no but at the moment I was pretty mad. I dont want to know who stole my stuff or why, just that all this griefing stops.

Vicious cycle is vicious. I think given what I have seen on the griefing problem I am withdrawing my proposal for the combat ruleset. Some people can't respect others creations and I can't see people respecting the combat rules which only work if we all agree to them. Sorry guys. If you can shape up your act I'll reconsider.

Can't say that I disagree with that.

I got Glimmar's Steampunk texture pack installed right now and I like it a lot. Really makes me want to build an Airship and sky railway in my SP game. :P

Yeah that was me. Was trying to stop people from going down the main road to New Montreal.
EDIT: Thanks for redecorating New Montreal guys.

I'm slightly more intrigued in getting Minecraft than usual, but don't expect me to say I'll be getting it for sure for a while. Even if I decide I want it, my housing situation for December-January is in question as my current semester ends and until I know exactly what I'll be doing and whether or not I'll have internet, I'm not going to be buying it.

That said:

I'm mostly interested in the multiplayer. Building things with you guys sounds like fun. But what are you all trying to do, exactly? I've lurked a few times in these threads and I know you have your own server and appear to be making your own city... is the construction organized? Do you have any specific goals? If I were to join, could someone tell me "Since you asked, we've been needing a ___, could you build it?" Or will I have to randomly build things by myself that I think the city needs? Do I need approval before building something I want? Do you have any long term goals, or are you just trying to build the biggest and best settlement you can make?

Also, every time I come into this thread I seem to see another instance of griefing. How big of a problem is it, and what is stopping you from getting rid of the griefers?

People come up with projects and such. We have a sorta LotR theme going right now. Mordor, Moria, etc.

There is a fight over Neo Montreal currently. Citizens vs an evil tyranny.

Griefers will be caught and executed. We have logs of who was online and at what time.

How big of a landmass are you guys allowed? You can just make endless amounts of cities and projects and stuff? And what happens if I don't know anything about the current theme, such as LotR?

And so you guys are baically coming up with stories as you go along (citizens vs an evil tyranny)? How exactly does the "vs" work?

Nah I just mentioned LotR because some people have been naming their settlements off of different terms. There is no actual theme.

And landmass is unlimited. Just make sure nothing is near you.

I was just saying the vs part for fun.

The LOTR thing just came about because I think someone built from LOTRish statues and people started calling my tower Mordor, followed by Hiomaste calling his mine Moria. It just sort of grew from there.

Alright, I'll try to answer as many of your questions as I can, so here we go.

We have a major city, Torhemn, that spawn is located in. Mostly people have been branching out from there and making their own settlements/cities/projects, etc.

Basically, we have a few factions set up right now, a couple of which are "at war," so you could join one of those or start building on your own.

There's really no restrictions on what you are allowed to do aside from griefing. Griefing is not allowed and will should be punished.

No long term goals at the moment. We mostly set things up according to whatever "storyline" we have going at the time. For example, right now the story seems to be revolving around the war for New Montreal, a settlement Cliffworms created and then abandoned. So some people have ran with that (notably the warring factions I mentioned), while others are just ignoring it and doing their own things.

The landmass can apparently reach up to 8 times the size of earth. Not sure if that's exact or just an exaggeration or what. But it really just generates more land once someone has reached the edge of what has been explored.

We're still trying to figure out how PvP will work, since combat isn't currently in multiplayer and we don't allow griefing. Gamgee had a good idea in the last thread, so right now it seems like that's what we're leaning towards using.

And like Suffca said, we don't really use themes, we just make up our own stories based on what the majority of the people seem to be interested in doing at the time.

Hope this helped. And you should definitely get the game, it's awesome. :D

Okay, thanks for answering. What was Gamgee's PvP idea exactly?

How does traveling work? Do you fast travel from the spawn point to various locations or what?

Does chat use text or voice? Will I have to *gasp* actually buy a mic?

To be honest, I really don't understand all the details, Basically it's an RPG system that has to do with dice rolls combined with different variables to determine things like how much damage you do and stuff like that.

Mostly, you walk. However, you can fast travel back to spawn, and you can also set a home that you can fast travel to. Also, admins are able to teleport you places, but only if there's another player there already (the admin has to have something there to teleport to first).

It's all text chat.

I'm not doing the PvP. As I stated up above. I intend to just peacefully build in seclusion until the players get their act in order.

We don't. Which gets kind of annoying when everyone else knows about some "secret" thing. I put that in quotations because it's usually only like 10% of the people who don't know.

Ah. How big is the bit of land you've all been using? What I mean is, I know it's unlimited, but if I walked from the center spawn point out to the farthest "edge of civilization" so to speak, where if I went any further all I'd find is either nothing at all or a few random settlements, how long would it take? Or is it not like that, and most people are trying to be secretive and stay away from everyone else?

Also, in the single player browser version, you can't build anything on or above the ocean. Is that the case with the full game?

We're spread out quite a bit. I believe New Undonia is two hours(?) east of the spawn while Neo Montreal is about 30 minutes north of the spawn. I think Gamgee is off somewhere secret that's probably farther then either of those so who knows how long it would take to reach him. It can take awhile to reach places if you're like me and get easily distracted by awesome environments and other peoples constructions. :P
