Notch said he'd add a “pvp” toggle flag to the server settings, right in the first release with damage added.

I would prefer it that way. All the fun of dungeon delving without the added threat of getting killed by griefers.

Indeed. It's not like PVP is very interesting anyway. It's just holding your left mouse button and jumping around until someone dies. If you catch him off guard or if you have diamond equipment and he doesnt yet, you win. Or he teleports away.

It's no fun unless you would arrange certain arena fights or sieges or whatever to make it interesting. And then you'd have to make PVP combat illegal outside of those events, but that would be impossible to keep under control.

Themed means that I'm not going to allow people to build massive sky-scraqers and other completely unrelated buildings. It will not be a mess of different designs, and will all follow the same look.

I'm building BlockTec in my zone dammit! :P

Or were you talking about the spawn point? :P

And amidst the civilizational madness, territorial chaos and creepy revolution; there lies http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/6712/mcmansion.png. Alone. Protector of the lone traveller, gatekeeper to the mountain veins and doombringer to the demons of potassium nitrate, charcoal and sulphur. This bastion will remain ever so eternal till the flames of destruction engulfes it, brought on by the burning flesh; a product of edification, devotion, multifarious construction and the stubbornness of Sus domestica.

In other words, I've built a house which will inevitably burn down because some pig will somehow manage to jump out of the lava moat and survive long enough to set the house ablaze.

Can that actually happen? :P

I'm confused. So we're going to be claiming territories on the new map? I don't really like that idea. Why don't we just all start at the spawn village or temple or whatever and branch out from there. People will start building where they want to and that will become their territory. Sounds like more fun to me, unless I'm not understanding something correctly.

Because that's what we did on the current (old?) map and it just didn't work to have free-for-all. There were petty arguments over land and stuff, you couldn't really tell someone to get off your land and when you went offline people had the opportunity to trash your place and you wouldn't be able to do anything. This way we can restrict everyone from coming on our land at all times lest they face the rath of the banhammer.

I would like to help too, seeing as I'm a mod :sadvaultboy:

I can haz IP?

No. Y'know that memory leak? Kills my computer when I'm running the server :P Exploring via the server also seems to slow down land gen anyway. I'll try getting the bulk of the map explored out tonight though, since I'm way too tired to study :|

I'm stuck deciding whether or not I want to join a city (or Vault) or construct an underground city, Dwarf Fortress style.

Well, I hope you get whatever you need to sort out sorted Kinguin, and then get yourself back onto the server and into the mines! :P

And yes, we will only add this map after survival aspects have been added. We will put the cartographed map up before the server release, and people will have to outline the area where they want their territory and the number of persons in their territory. I shall then make a somewhat ambiguous (just for border dispute fun :D) map detailing the different territories and no-mans land. You are expected to generally stay WITHIN the explored territory: we wanted something that was mapped and contained.

Non-claimed land can be considered no-man's land, and can be claimed, but if you claim something it's your job to kick everyone else off the area :P

I'm assuming we'll all have to go to the no-mans land to get resources and such.

So when you post the map, we all have to post a map with a highlighted region we claim for ourselves? In that case, I'd like it if, when you posted the map, you also marked on that map an example for the exact size of territory we should be claiming, so nobody claims something too small or http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/83/10416035.jpg.

I say we turn off PvP and falling damage initially. Then if we ever feel like having some sort of "war" RP or something, we could turn it back on for a short while.

I suggest that we split in few larger parties. This way the survival and figthing monsters is much more fun.
If you like to be alone, that is ok.

Anyone willing to team up with me?
I still need to plan out a proper name for our "faction". So feel free to toss ideas about it.

If nothing else, I'll continue with Gray Death Legion

I'm with Undone and Rev ^_^

...and anyone else willing to endure the brutal initiation ritual.

I think the size of groups should affect how much land they get, one person shouldn't get the same amount of land as a group of five people for instance. :P

Guys... I think we need smaller map. My 2.83GHz quad core CPU and 4GB of RAM are being absolutely mauled by Cartographer now.

Why don't you start off mapping a teeny-tiny area of a new map, and then explore it in ever-expanding circles until Cartographer starts showing signs of protest?

Will do. I'll try falling back on an earlier version of the map we've been using so we maintain the general nice landscape.

A competing mercenary faction of the Gray Death should of course be called Ambrosia.

I still had the original zip you sent me as a back up. Seems to be going alright so far. A shame to lose some of the beautiful landscape we'd found though :(

Undone: Yeah it's a shame, it's going to generate differently this time of course. Still some of the good parts should still be there and hopefully the game gets the hint and continues generating good looking landscape. :P
