Unofficial Minecraft Discussion XXIX

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 8:19 am

Rules for Conduct and Discussion Within this Topic:
  • All discussions regarding server administration and decisions must take place at: http://www.jamieep.co.uk/forums/viewforum.php?f=9
  • Any discussion regarding the running of the server is forbidden within this thread, and will be considered in breach of the CD rules.
  • Any discussion regarding your activities within the BGSF community server, any other Minecraft server or a Single-Player world is allowed within this thread.
  • Any other Minecraft related discussion that is in accordance with the BGSF CD rules is allowed within this thread.

Important Notice for all those Interested in the Server and its Status:

We are not going to ignore the community, instead we are going to create a system via which you can actually communicate with us. This will be a hierarchical council system.

Admins - These people act as a House of Lords to the decision making process; they are able to veto decisions that they would consider detrimental or negative to the health of the server, however most decisions made by the Council will be passed. They will also act as controllers of any vault system implemented, maintain the server, and have the final say in issues regarding moderating.
Wampbit
Bonemonster
Undone

Mods - Have the /ban, /tp (or a griefalert derivative), /spawn commands. They police the server, and are completely separate from the Admin decision-making process. Their opinion will bear weight similar to that of the council regarding issues related to their responsibilities.
Possible tweaks to existing moderator setup, pending discussion with individuals.

Council - Decision making representatives of the player-base. These members are put forward by the players to represent them, but the final decision on appointment falls on the Admins and existing council members. Except in extreme conditions, the decision of this group will determine any changes to the server.
Suggested council members (pending acceptance by both them and the player-base):
Carlzilla
Robbio
Gamgee
Cliffworms
Saurok
Povuholo
Tesfanner

None of the suggested controversial server changes will go through until this system is in place, and we have had a complete discussion with the council, and answered the questions the player base may pose.

All discussions of the above must take place at http://www.jamieep.co.uk/forums/viewforum.php?f=9 - any discussion pertaining to the issues raised here, and other server issues are not suitable for the BGSF, and shall be reported, as stated in the rules for this thread. Know that we intend to change the server for the better, how this change will manifest is still undecided, but a degree of decisive action must be taken, unlike the laissez-faire approach to administration we have gradually approached.

What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a creative sandbox game centered around exploration and survival; exploring and gathering resources allows you to protect yourself against a variety of beasties that hunt you down during the night. The creative sandbox elements of the game fuel your want to survive and gather, which in turn allow you to build many wonderful creations. Basic fluid physics also provide interesting means of creating basic machines. The multiplayer is very similar to the single-player, just with more people. Right now neither enemies nor damage function, however an update fixing this will be arriving shortly.

Server Information
The server is currently closed to prevent potential griefing action. It shall be re-opened once we have fully confirmed the overhaul to the moderation hierarchy.

Ever since the beta I can't get any good worlds. I miss the classic days of Alpha when i could get this beautiful world with a bunch of mountains and cool looking landscapes and caves spread about, it was perfect. Now if I want to make a new world I'd have to scroll through 9 or 10 worlds of deserts and open prairies and huge forests with no mountains, caves, and resources in sight except for dirt, sand, and wood

edit: I mean I'm obviously not expecting everything to be handed to me from the start, but I would atleast like to spawn somewhere near the resources I need, and caves to explore so I dont have to make make-shift bases all throughout the world and constantly be traveling

well its not 100% desert ofcourse, but i'll spawn in a huge field of sand and cacti, and end up traveling for atleast 6 - 8 minutes before finding any suitable place for bases and such, since i cant live in like a pyramid or somethin cus of the physics

I've found that new maps tend to generate a good variety of terrain types over a small area, but there does seem to be a significant bias towards forest biomes. The thing that irks me most though is that distinct continents are difficult to find. Everything seems to be one large landmass.

really? for me I always get these small islands that I could probably explore in just 2 to 4 hours played time, I wouldn't mind one huge land mass right now

Anyone else have problems with mods in SP? I get the most up to date mod I can find, follow the instructions to the letter, generate a new world, and it has never worked for me. I just want a controller block portcullis already.

I personally tend to gen very large landmasses without water features internally that are surrounded by numerous islands separated by what are, at their largest, lakes.

It would be nice if minecraft could gen something like a continent, rather than the land o'lakes.

Yeah, every time I think I'm about to close off a coastline I hit a connection to another large landmass. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a179/th3undon3on3/map5-obliqueangle-day.png an example of a typical map of mine.

Only mod I'm currently running is the minimap mod. I tried installing the beta version of flymod to no avail.

Can we get a list on who is getting "removed"?

Moderator: I suggest you re-read the OP and determine the best place to ask that sort of question. :)

i was looking at this mod and i think this might be something your looking for http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=76184
what it seems to do is allow you customize your world, i think almost like in a Civilization game, by telling it what types of Biomes you want and what resources are around

Every 1 block you travel in the nether, you move 10 blocks in the real world - it's a means of making fast transporation between two places. Albeit risky. There are also different ores down there such as lightstone.

Create a new world. Look into your appdata\minecraft directory for the newly generated settings file. Refer to http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=76184 for guidance. Backup your other saves though, there's no telling what might go wrong with existing worlds, or the simple port to beta. ^_^

Blahberry has admitted responsibility for the latest spate of thefts on the server, and has been removed from the whitelist. This may or may not lead to a review of the whitelist. We know from server logs that he wasn't responsible for some of the other counts of griefing.

If anyone has any information or evidence (circumstantial or otherwise) regarding the other removed players (EvanEmpathy and Xkira) please PM me, either here or on Jamie's forum (link in the OP). Similarly, if anyone believes that any other players should be removed, PM me.

Do not reply in this thread.

Guys, this is the second time I have had to delete posts in this thread. I said it was OK for the undone to post some information here as not everyone was aware of what was going on, and I would have thought his request not to post about it here would have been sufficient. Once everyone is aware of the rules of this topic I hope it will settle down. Please don't make me come back here again - OK?

So, I'm thinking it might be time to start applying some mods to my Minecraft experience. I'm thinking of starting with these:

Zan's minimap - http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=77497
-I had this one previously and quite enjoyed it. I just wish the waypoints saved upon closing.

Minecart Mania - http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=67683
-Also had previously but never used to its full extent. I like the concept of minecarts but don't frequently use them.

Daggers and Battle Axes - http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=127660
-For a better, RPGesque experience?

Fancypack - http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=99045
-Seem like fun.

Also, here's one to think of for SMP (Though I'm sure some of you already know about it...)
Lightweight Chest Protection & Management - http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1012&t=79215

Any other suggestions? What are your favorite mods?

...

Zan's minimap is the only one I currently use (and, to TIMN, I've had no problems with it in either single or multiplayer). Minecarts I've always thought of something more suited to multiplayer for more efficient mining operations. I definitely like the look of Fancypack though; I've always hated how empty by buildings end up being due to lack of furniture.

The Fancypack looks rather nice. Minecraft certainly needs stuff like that

Which is great when it works... I created a teleporter in one of my many bases and the thing took me through to an existing portal in the Nether... The problem being that if I try to use that teleporter I get teleported to the wrong place. <_<
