Unofficial Minecraft Discussion XXXII

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 9:05 pm

Rules for Conduct and Discussion Within this Topic:

* All discussions regarding server administration and decisions must take place at: http://www.jamieep.co.uk/forums/index.php
* Any discussion regarding the running of the server is forbidden within this thread, and will be considered in breach of the CD rules.
* Any discussion regarding your activities within the BGSF community server, any other Minecraft server or a Single-Player world is allowed within this thread.
* Any other Minecraft related discussion that is in accordance with the BGSF CD rules is allowed within this thread.

Important Notice for all those Interested in the Server and its Status:

We are not going to ignore the community, instead we are going to create a system via which you can actually communicate with us. This will be a hierarchical council system.

Admins - These people act as a House of Lords to the decision making process; they are able to veto decisions that they would consider detrimental or negative to the health of the server, however most decisions made by the Council will be passed. They will also act as controllers of any vault system implemented, maintain the server, and have the final say in issues regarding moderating.
Wampbit
Bonemonster
Undone

Mods - TBD powers.

Council - Decision making representatives of the player-base. These members are put forward by the players to represent them, but the final decision on appointment falls on the Admins and existing council members. Except in extreme conditions, the decision of this group will determine any changes to the server.
Council Members:
Caffienatedjedi
Carlzilla
Saurok
SimpsonFly
TESFanner

To see council debates refer to Jamies forums and the suggestion board in the Admin Tower.

All discussions of the above must take place at http://www.jamieep.co.uk/forums/index.php - any discussion pertaining to the issues raised here, and other server issues are not suitable for the BGSF, and shall be reported, as stated in the rules for this thread. Know that we intend to change the server for the better, how this change will manifest is still undecided, but a degree of decisive action must be taken, unlike the laissez-faire approach to administration we have gradually approached.

What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a creative sandbox game centered around exploration and survival; exploring and gathering resources allows you to protect yourself against a variety of beasties that hunt you down during the night. The creative sandbox elements of the game fuel your want to survive and gather, which in turn allow you to build many wonderful creations. Basic fluid physics also provide interesting means of creating basic machines. The multiplayer is very similar to the single-player, just with more people. Right now neither enemies nor damage function, however an update fixing this will be arriving shortly.

How long until we get the old map already. Some of us don't have anything else to play.

Note that it will become your new respawn point, you'll have to DIE to take advantage of it.

And I didn't read anything in that about it working in Multiplayer.

Also Bone, Tank said that he had an Idea for the Nether. I don't know if he told you yet, but if not get on Steam so that I can explain it.

The link to the old world appears to be dead already. Any chance someone can upload it again?

Fine with me. I die at least four times whenever I am playing to build. I wish real life beds let us respawn when we slept in them.

I really don't think that beds are going to work in SMP. The more you think about it the less likely it looks like it will be in SMP.

The time passing quickly won't work in SMP for sure, but the spawn point side of it should be possible.

im considering trying out one of the online servers since ive seen various youtube videos and they look kinda fun. i had a couple of questions though. how often to new maps get made? im assuming at some point all the minerals have been mined so is there a command that replaces them or do you start a new map then. just curious cause if they are making new maps every week or two then i wouldnt bother making another james bond secret mountain lair again.

Hardly ever. The only time we make news maps is when we get bored and/or the current map messes up somehow. We shouldn't be making a new map for a while though, the current one's only about two months old.

And there are plenty of minerals to go round, don't worry about that..

In the whole lifetime of our server we've only changed maps twice. Like Teehee said, maps only get changed if there's something wrong with the one we're on currently.

And there's so many minerals that all of them could never be mined. So that's not even an issue. The multiplayer maps can be just as big as single player, so if people get bored with our current area we just head to a different one.

Alright, I'm thinking of actively playing this again. Can somebody explain buying land to me?

+ 1

Edit: Only bought it last night. My inner perfectionist is making to difficult for me to stick to one world for more than a few hours. What do?

It should be, but I'm not sure if Notch will actually put it in. Just think of the spawn-griefing.

I'd assume that it would be easiest just to make it specific to that player.

I'm actually surprised he hasn't put something in to password your crates or to have some type of ownership system, as theft seems to be a problem on public servers.

it would be nice to have a lock and key that you could craft. call me weird but im always hoping that the monsters dont get smart enough to turn a door knob since they dont lock. i always put a block of stone directly behind the door to prevent someone from entering..........i know paranoid.

A combination lock probably works better... Or simply have set 'permissions' like any forum does. Considering that if you were carrying a key in your inventory and died, then were unable to retrieve it, you'd be locked out of your own chest.
