Unofficial Minecraft Discussion XXXIII

Post » Tue Sep 14, 2010 5:51 pm

Rules for Conduct and Discussion Within this Topic:

* All discussions regarding server administration and decisions must take place at: http://www.jamieep.co.uk/forums/index.php
* Any discussion regarding the running of the server is forbidden within this thread, and will be considered in breach of the CD rules.
* Any discussion regarding your activities within the BGSF community server, any other Minecraft server or a Single-Player world is allowed within this thread.
* Any other Minecraft related discussion that is in accordance with the BGSF CD rules is allowed within this thread.

Important Notice for all those Interested in the Server and its Status:

We are not going to ignore the community, instead we are going to create a system via which you can actually communicate with us. This will be a hierarchical council system.

Admins - These people act as a House of Lords to the decision making process; they are able to veto decisions that they would consider detrimental or negative to the health of the server, however most decisions made by the Council will be passed. They will also act as controllers of any vault system implemented, maintain the server, and have the final say in issues regarding moderating.
Wampbit
Bonemonster
Undone
Mrtankjump

Mods - TBD powers.

Council - Decision making representatives of the player-base. These members are put forward by the players to represent them, but the final decision on appointment falls on the Admins and existing council members. Except in extreme conditions, the decision of this group will determine any changes to the server.
Council Members:
Caffienatedjedi
Carlzilla
Saurok
SimpsonFly
TESFanner

To see council debates refer to Jamies forums and the suggestion board in the Admin Tower.

All discussions of the above must take place at http://www.jamieep.co.uk/forums/index.php - any discussion pertaining to the issues raised here, and other server issues are not suitable for the BGSF, and shall be reported, as stated in the rules for this thread. Know that we intend to change the server for the better, how this change will manifest is still undecided, but a degree of decisive action must be taken, unlike the laissez-faire approach to administration we have gradually approached.

What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a creative sandbox game centered around exploration and survival; exploring and gathering resources allows you to protect yourself against a variety of beasties that hunt you down during the night. The creative sandbox elements of the game fuel your want to survive and gather, which in turn allow you to build many wonderful creations. Basic fluid physics also provide interesting means of creating basic machines. The multiplayer is very similar to the single-player, just with more people. Right now neither enemies nor damage function, however an update fixing this will be arriving shortly.

Does anybody know how the hell to install Zan's Minimap? The old one had an installer but the new one doesn't even have so much as one sentence of instructions.

Well I have modloader, I have the Minimap, I know where it goes (Dump everything in the Minimap folder into the Minecraft.jar), but I can't figure out how to actually dump it in the jar. Dragging and dropping doesn't work. Opening it doesn't work. Copy/paste doesn't work. I am out of ideas.

You need to open it with WinRAR then click the "Add" button to add the files. I had the same problem you're having when I tried to use 7-Zip to do it, but it turns out you need a program with an add function (7Zip didn't appear to have it but then again I didn't look that hard before trying WinRAR)

Does it really have to come to that? I detest WinRAR.

So do I but it's the only solution I'm aware of. Unless you can find an add files function in 7-Zip or another archiver...

 Well best to ask in the official thread for that particular mod then. I'm far from an expert on Minecraft mods, all I know is that I was able to add the files I needed to add with WinRAR's add function, aside from that I'm clueless.

No, I mean that I found a feature in 7-Zip that allowed me to add. Except that it didn't actually work. Either way i did as you said and got WinRAR. At least now I have a Minimap again.

I notice that both you and Robbio have started posting in this thread again. Gotten over the previous drama? :ermm:

I can't speak for Robbio but I only recently started posting again when Kaitou Kid started asking about the old map. Posting again resulted in me checking this thread more often than I used to, so now I also post more. Not posting in this thread before that wasn't about the drama but more because I haven't been playing Minecraft much at all since the old map was taken down. In fact I haven't been playing any games, let alone Minecraft, much recently because this semester has been really brutal in terms of workload. I've only been able to manage less than two hours of Deus Ex in two weeks, let alone play Minecraft.

...So yeah. I haven't cared about the drama since like a week after the map changed, and I only ever think about it when I (try to) play on the old map. I'm certainly not going to be joining the server again in the foreseeable future, but even if I wanted to I wouldn't have any time.

I was thinking about getting an inventory hack on the old map and hacking in lots of TNT so that I could blow everything up and pretend like it was some kind of ruined civilization. It would be better if I could find some way of removing all the torches. What kind of abandoned ruins have lit torches?

I thought about downloading a texture pack to use on the old map that would make it feel abandoned and at least somewhat unrecognizable from what it used to be, but unfortunately there seems to be a lack of any post-apocalyptic or ruined texture packs out there. I'm not sure just blowing part of the structures up would be convincing enough to make you stop associating the "ruins" with what they previously looked like and with who built them.

Plus I know that to find any good loot you'd need to use a transparent texture pack to uncover the secret areas most people used to hide their stuff. For example my territory is totally devoid of loot unless you can find the entrance to my underground base, and even then using a transparent texture pack to find my hidden items wouldn't work because I applied the work-around for that (surrounding the chests with dirt) back when we were having problems with the transparent texture pack thief.

So if everyone on a server needs to be sleeping to skip over the night, what happens when you're the only one sleeping? I assumed you just wouldn't be able to but apparently you can...

You get on the bed, the screen darkens a little, and the chat opens up. You can then chat or click on a 'leave the bed' button. Time passes as usual. :P

A regular Minecraftian comes across a beautiful island in his world and decides he wants to build a new cabin home close to the water. When the sun goes down he must abandon his worksite to take shelter for the night. Problem is, daylight isn't coming back.
