I tried the seed "Markus". It was probably the best map I've ever seen.

Phew... I *think* I've finally gotten to the bottom of the 'crash to a black screen' bug that I've been getting off and on ever since the 1.2 update. Updating Minecraft, Java, and display drivers didn't do it, nor did new worlds or forcing V-sync. A Minecraft forum post prompted me to try launching Minecraft from within a .bat file that limits its memory usage... And I haven't had a crash since. Thank goodness, because those crashes can do weird things... Sometimes they'll reset the world to its last prior save, but keep my inventory - or vice versa. Sometimes they'll corrupt that entire world. That's not something I want for the BGSF shared world!

Yup, he's still got it till Monday or Tuesday sometime, then I take it for a week, then Game and you if I remember correctly.

We can consider shortening the span one person has to edit (I think 2-3 days might suffice) but we should wait until everyone onboard has one 'turn' before implementing that.

You do realize that the bigger the map is the more strain it puts on the server?

Yes, and after dying and being tired, I decided I'd call my first SAF adventure finished for the day

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/ March Mayhem Developers Showdown just started up today and despite Mojang being paired against Nintendo they're currently maintaining a respectable 47.8%. With a big push they may even be able to defeat the behemoth, it's not a lost cause!

I'm sure Bethesda will also appreciate your vote but they currently have 94% of the vote against CCP Games so they seem to be doing pretty well :D

In other news we set up my five-year-old with his first Minecraft world. It's very cute watching him play, and he's picked up an astonishing number of things that both my wife and I have done: he's crafted a wide variety of objects without ever asking for help on how to make something and he's also used some of our construction techniques, like me temporary spiral stair cases for going up or down quickly. While it's not surprising that he's picked up on some things I didn't realize how far the Minecraft corruption had spread until he started playing. :)

(He also asks some of the deepest and most difficult questions about the nature of time you'll hear from someone young or old thanks to a formative helping of Doctor Who. Whether he understands the depth of his questions is debatable but at least he asks them.)

His minecraft construction is extremely cramped whereas my wife and I tend to make overly spacious buildings. His first house started as a 2x2 square with two doors and the only reason he expanded it was to fit a bed in. His second was a on block wide hallway (expanded slightly at the back to again fit in a bed) with a two block wheat farm fenced in outside.

Interesting (about your son's creations). I've let my 8 year old cousin play and he's made some really cool designs. Very creative. One of the few games that can actually teach something to children.

That looks interesting. You've got to love how screwed Team Meat are. I will also be interested to see who wins out of Nintendo and Mojang, although I have to say my vote would always go for Nintendo in that match up.

You may have already seen it, but that story about your son reminded me of http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2010/11/8/. :P

In other news, it's been forever since I last participated in minecrafty goodness (there are SQUID now? when did THAT happen?), and I guess I'm no longer whitelisted anymore. I would like to request that I be added to whatever server we're currently using. ^_^

They were added in January. They're hard to find however since they can't swim up so unless you have a shallow body of water they're difficult to see. I passed a lake yesterday with four of them stuck shoulder to shoulder because they had all settled in the same low area.

No worries. If you're busy, the real world takes precedence.

My Minecraft crashed again today. Bloody hell. So I've done a few more tweaks to try and stop it. Good news is it's now once in a blue moon and the one time recently it did happen, I didn't lose any progress at all. Playing on peaceful for the share map will help, too, since then I don't mind turning down the draw distance or the fancy lighting, and there won't be hostile mobs to use the precious memory that - apparently - I'm short on. (Though in reality it's a coding error that causes a memory leak at dawn or dusk...)

Yeah, I didn't have time to take down some of the nether portals that weren't in use, but that's no big deal I guess. Well here's the map:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IM3U9D7O

Once you extract it, make sure to rename it from "Session 2" to "Session 3" before copying it into your saves folder.

Edit: Also, it seems like it's impossible to save the game, exit the program, then reload the game and still be facing the same direction you were facing when you saved. So if you're not looking in the right direction, just turn around and look for the signs.

Will do. Downloaded now. I've got some time off this week, so hopefully I'll have plenty of time to explore. And build stuff!

(And say how ridiculously cool all the previous work was)

When you load the game you face towards your spawn point.

Yup, and they're glitchy too... Or at least they were when I encountered one on the former server, after teleporting back with the /home command following a lag-zombie kill, because the mob spawner was suddenly spawning invisible zombies that kept me from getting back all mah stuff!

Ah, that makes sense. Still frustrating in this type of situation though.
