Unofficial Minecraft Discussion XXXIV

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:57 pm

Rules for Conduct and Discussion Within this Topic:

* All discussions regarding server administration and decisions must take place at: http://www.jamieep.co.uk/forums/index.php
* Any discussion regarding the running of the server is forbidden within this thread, and will be considered in breach of the CD rules.
* Any discussion regarding your activities within the BGSF community server, any other Minecraft server or a Single-Player world is allowed within this thread.
* Any other Minecraft related discussion that is in accordance with the BGSF CD rules is allowed within this thread.

Important Notice for all those Interested in the Server and its Status:

We are not going to ignore the community, instead we are going to create a system via which you can actually communicate with us. This will be a hierarchical council system.

Admins - These people act as a House of Lords to the decision making process; they are able to veto decisions that they would consider detrimental or negative to the health of the server, however most decisions made by the Council will be passed. They will also act as controllers of any vault system implemented, maintain the server, and have the final say in issues regarding moderating.
Wampbit
Bonemonster
Undone
Mrtankjump

Mods - TBD powers.

Council - Decision making representatives of the player-base. These members are put forward by the players to represent them, but the final decision on appointment falls on the Admins and existing council members. Except in extreme conditions, the decision of this group will determine any changes to the server.
Council Members:
Caffienatedjedi
Carlzilla
Saurok
SimpsonFly
TESFanner

To see council debates refer to Jamies forums and the suggestion board in the Admin Tower.

All discussions of the above must take place at http://www.jamieep.co.uk/forums/index.php - any discussion pertaining to the issues raised here, and other server issues are not suitable for the BGSF, and shall be reported, as stated in the rules for this thread. Know that we intend to change the server for the better, how this change will manifest is still undecided, but a degree of decisive action must be taken, unlike the laissez-faire approach to administration we have gradually approached.

What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a creative sandbox game centered around exploration and survival; exploring and gathering resources allows you to protect yourself against a variety of beasties that hunt you down during the night. The creative sandbox elements of the game fuel your want to survive and gather, which in turn allow you to build many wonderful creations. Basic fluid physics also provide interesting means of creating basic machines. The multiplayer is very similar to the single-player, just with more people. Right now neither enemies nor damage function, however an update fixing this will be arriving shortly.

I've been getting questions on how to install Zans map so I will make a walkthrough here. It should be added to the OP.

First you need to get Minecraft ModLoader :

http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=80246

Then get a free copy of winrar, 7z could work but its iffy (doesn't work for me but works for others) :

http://www.win-rar.com/download.html

Then get the latest Zans Map :

http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=97332&p=1456935#ZansMini

Then follow these instructions :

1. Extract the data from ModLoader.zip, do the same for zansminimap (preferably into new folder for both)
2. Using Winrar, open the Minecraft.jar file found in appdata/roaming/minecraft.bin You can do this from within the Winrar UI.
3. Drag and drop all .Class files from Modloader into Minecraft.jar
4. Drag and drop all necessary files from Zans Minimap into Minecraft.jar (don't do the readme and whatnot)
5. Delete the Meta -INF folder from the Minecraft.jar
6. Exit the Minecraft.bin folder from within Winrar
7. Exit Winrar
8. Start Minecraft
9. ????
10. Profit

Server Information
The server is open! 88.198.17.4:25500

Map: http://min.us/mvbjC4q (Angled) and http://min.us/mvb1nCv (Top Down)

Some new stuff is brewing over at Jamies. You all should really register over there and check it out. Have fun!

News:
iConomy is still not updated, our current mod isn't quite stable enough to be permanent. If no issues happen with current mod within the next 24 hours, I'll begin RE-RE-RE-importing money, based on what everyone currently has and what the accounts were at about 2 days ago.

The gargamel seed (be sure not to use a capital letter, it matters) is awesome. Absolutely fantastic landscape all around spawn. West, north west, south, south east...

THAT, is an Epic SeeD. I still propose a list of Epic SeeD's that we have found.

Also.... its that time again! Our next due date is March 5th. Head on over to Jamies for instructions if you would like to donate, or PM me.

EDIT: +1000 internets to whoever gets the reference.

Rules of editing:
-Don't be a dink with the character. Your week is your legacy, so leave some stuff behind for the next player.

If the next editor does not check in and acknowledge download within 48 hours, the map shall pass to the next person on the list to indicate interest on a first-come, first-serve basis. Done. Your name WAS in there but it wasn't case-sensitive as it needed to be. I blame Tank. :P

Also, We... errr... I am having trouble getting into the game. I can't say the same for others... yet.

Tank, what's the current plan for Vivec you're calculating? The Foreign quarter District, the Temple District, or the whole city?

Some calculations.

My Vivec texture replacers happens to have a convenient square texture design for the floors.

http://i.imgur.com/NjgKu.jpg

If we say that each square is 3x3 MC blocks (4x4 may be better, what do you think?), then the lowest level of the foreign quarter (assuming we're doing that) is 26 x 22 squares = 78 x 66 MC blocks.

I checked the interiors, which match up with the exteriors really well, and it too has a square design, where each square (equally large as the one outsides) is one static. So that makes for easy counting:

http://i.imgur.com/lcafs.jpg

Each level is around 2 squares less long on each side than the level below. So for the upper district this means it's 22*18 squares, (66x54 in MC blocks). As you can see in the interior shot the district is 19 squares across, if you take the extra walking space outside in account that should lead to 22 squares. ;)

Finally, height. I took one of the interior squares and rotated it around, so it can be used to measure.

http://i.imgur.com/kkmfg.jpg

The squares show Vivec from the top to the water level. The side bits are the walk ways outside, so you walk right on top of those. That brings the total height to 19, times 3 that's 57 blocks high, excluding the underwater part.

ive made a couple of posts about snow and water physics in minecraft and that got me thinking. i cant think of any other game out there that lets you do the things you can do in minecraft. is minecraft really the most advanced game to date?

water physics including flow and the water pushes your character with the current.

land deformation and destructable terrain (if youve encounted any creepers you know what im talking about)

advance snow physics. not only can you collect it but you can also craft snowballs with it.

one of the most complicated and versatile crafting systems ive seen ever including in MMOs.

for you fellow engineering students out there they have red dust which is used for creating on/off switch systems for doors and various contraptions

intelligent AI. if a creeper cant get into your house and you get to close to him to swing your sword he will simply blow up and kill you or at least take out your door and windows. i learned the hard way that you cant have to empty side by side space open no matter how high you are.......those spiders will get in. eeks

fire actually burns the environment and even spreads further out.

gravel is affected by gravity (i wonder why they dont do the same thing with dirt)

tools and weapons degrade with use

an exciting plotline similar to castaway with tom hanks

probably lots more things i can think of.

The rest of the Vivec discussion has moved to Jamie's forums. It looks like we've found a big enough space to build the whole of Vivec. :)

You must not have played many video games then. :P

I have played a lot of games that get all of those things better, from fire physics to whatever you call what redstone does.

However I'm not sure if there is another game out there that actually does all of those things at once.

Here's one of the shared worlds from the Minecraft forum (the original, I think).

http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1020&t=74122

I post it here because it'll give us ideas on how to do our own (or how NOT to do our own) and possible rules to implement with it. And because some other people might be interested in getting another crack at a different shared singleplayer map.

I've got to hit the sack, though. Sleepy Mr.E needs sleepy time.

I don't like how they have it set up so that each person is doing their own thing. I think for our map we should focus on helping each other make the map the best we can make it. So, for example, one person makes a cobble mine for future players, then the next person finds caves and builds roads to those caves for themselves and future players to mine and explore, the next person mines them, and so on. That's not to say each player would do ONLY that, I just mean that everything we do should benefit everyone who works on the map. So there should be no going off on a 5 hour walk and making an isolated city for yourself, for example.

Other rules I think we should have are that supplies should be shared, so we'd have one big community storage area, and players shouldn't demolish previous players work unless they have a really good reason for it.

Money is working now, back to iConomy. Use /money . Imported previous balances, and all of the data from the previous plugin that I could. Sorry for any inconvenience, but it can't be worse than the 2 hours I spent getting the data to import correctly.

I agree if we all work together and share all the supplies it would make the experience better. So anyone could join and build and add stuff without spending the first few days mining and chopping down trees. I also think that we should be allowed to build a own small house or residence just to make the place look purty and village like. So I agree with you.
I also strongly hope that there isn't a strong ruleset. It should be a place you start up have fun exploring and looking at what other people have built and how it has evolved. Then finding a nice plot of land close by and building something that you think the next person will enjoy looking at while adding stuff to the community stores. Than worrying "Am I going to get yelled at for building this dock?"
That's my two cents, I cant wait for my turn though.

I opened my first portal to the Nether yesterday. Encountered my first Ghast. Ran the hell out of there when I heard it. I think it'd be prime to get a bow and arrow to take it out...should I ever go in there again.

You can use your sword (equipped item) to knock their fireballs back at them for MASSIVE DAMAGE. Its sometimes hard to gauge when to swing though, the timing seems to be off a little Bows work too.

I agree with both of you. Free and easy, without too many restrictions, sounds like the way to go. Especially considering we're already more casual about it... We have a week (unless we deem it too long, but I can be patient) whereas they had 12 hours. We kinda know each other so we'll already tend to be more respectful of each other's creations. We'll appreciate the effort that went into grabbing those diamond ores. There's fewer of us and always will be. Speaking of which, the list now looks like:

I can think of ONE rule right now, though. Please try to avoid using mods which add content to the game world for this map. I'm not sure what will happen when it gets to the next person, but I'm pretty certain it won't turn out properly. As nice as an obsidian battle axe might sound, we should stick to vanilla-ish gameplay.

I'm getting kinda excited to see what others have up their sleeves, too!
