I'm curious - when you play Alpha to construct your projects, do you mine all the ores, or do you edit your inventory to give you unlimited ores of your choosing?
At the moment, I'm going completely natural, but gave up on that when I had to build a circular glass dome. I edited in unlimited glass blocks, and that made the process much faster. I mean, I gave up on making glass blocks after I made 10 of them, and I needed around 500 or so.
Materials such as rocks are a different story though, with my chests bursting to the seam with them, so I just use them up.

Build scaffolds out of dirt, man.

Scaffold are made out of wood, silly. I have principals :P

How the hell do you build a castle? I would love to see a picture of that, even if it's still a work in progress.

I'm gonna take a few pics and up them JUST for you :P

Also: I work for my stuff. Creative mode looks kinda boring IMO

I'm the furthest I've been so far. Way, way down in the map. Found some gold and some cool red stuff... Hitting a bunch of blocks I can't break, though - they're just scattered all over and I have to dig around them.

Be VERY careful down there. I've found holes in the bedrock (Unbreakable blocks) that drops you out into the Ether. And then you die and lose all your items. Just like Lava Death

I mine/make everything, whilst playing the game on hard - the challenge of enemies and the resource requirements are fun. To save time you can't really sit around waiting during the nights (say if you need sand) - so it forces you to make your way across the lands at night, getting resources and surviving; the biggest glass structure I have built was around 1300 blocks, although that was back in indev. I think that the fun is really in all that time spent collecting, makes it all feel more rewarding.

On another note I am now awake and shall begin the process of updating my server and then creating a world for the BGSF forums. I'm currently considering putting a landmark into the world for the sake of navigation and just for a bit of fun. For now (when things are up and running) the Hamachi details will be public. If we get griefers coming along I shall make them available by request via PMs. I can't wait to see if this will work :D.

[edit]: Just discovered that I haven't in any way organised my various server worlds - better do this quickly before I lose all track of which world is what.

So these multiplayer servers, they're pretty much persistent worlds crafted by the players?

I just bought it, it was 10 euros. Nice. :)

How do I take a screentshot in Minecraft? They are usually handled with PrtScrn but... I can't find the pics....

Minecraft doesn't have a screenshot function so either use a screenshot program or use the PrntScrn button and Ctrl+V into Paint or something and save as a jpg

I was thinking of using one of my other computers as a server but I have no idea how to run a server nor what all it entails. If you or someone were to make a persistent server I would gladly donate to help keep it running.

One should also make it password protected so it would only be BGSF peoples on it.

Also, would there be any way to incorporate voice chat on the server?

I'm not sure how to make it work, but password would be great.

With regards to the multiplayer, how viable is it to have an actual economy? For instance, if I were to run a shop producing mass amounts of glass, would it just be on trust that people will give me something of equal "value" in return, or would you all just come in and steal my glass?

I wouldn't steal. That would be griefing. I don't grief.... unless its CoD/Halo (only on enemies)... :P

If there is an option, griefers should be banned from the server.

Either that, or just password if at all possible.

I will play some MP survival, as long as you don't mind the silly account name because I share it with my friend. :P

What's your account name then? :P

I shall be buying the game soon (just waiting for my mum's Visa), and I'll gladly join MP with you guys.

Yes, If someone starts making glass or something else valuable, other players should buy it. We could use some rare mineral as currency and make tables that how much
each items costs.

I was thinking more of a direct barter system - I'd just put up signs saying the various rates I'd trade at, ie glass:iron ore of 1:1, glass:sand of 5:1 etc.

Would work too.

But such materials as sand and stone are so common that they would be worthless.

You can actually put up signs?

Also, how do you guys find out what type of stuff you can create? Do you just put the minerals together hoping they form something, or is there some sort of table on the internet?

But a full stack of sand takes about a whole "12 Hour" cycle to turn into glass. Some people don't want to wait that long.

@tesfanner - not sure about everyone else but I go through the files at new updates and find the icons for the new items, from there trying to work out what the combination is :P.

@Everyone - the server is, well, not going so well. I've managed to troubleshoot past most things, as there were quite a few java related bugs that needed to be sorted before the thing would even run properly (this latest update has caused quite a few problems for me it seems), however I'm hitting a brickwall regarding getting it through security - it works fine if I kill my security, however I can't figure out what part of the security software needs to have a few holes poked through it for minecraft. Much to my surprise it's not any of the firewalls along the routes, as I can disable those completely and the error is unchanged. I am repeatedly getting the "java.io.IOException: Bad packet id " error when any client attempts to connect to the server; so basically for some reason the client is expecting a different packet than that which is sent, thus creating an error message. My first thought was that the time was not synchronous between the client and server, or something to that effect - but so far that line of thought hasn't lead to a solution. If anyone has any java experience/knowledge of this error do shout if you think you have a potential solution. For now I'll continue playing with security, and start working my way through likely settings in an orderly manner (maybe just disable everything, and slowly work up until I've found the problem causer).

There is loads of sand in shores, it is easy to pick up.
But yes, glass is more valuable.

I went to look how multiplayer works on one finnish server. Signs are put in good use to mark property of different players and such.
I want BGSF server now :(

Glass is really easy to make - just find a beach and you're set.

I bought the Alpha so I could play survival mode - so I play that way. If I wanted to just build stuff, I'd just play the free classic build mode on their website.

I'm building a huge mine right now, and I was going to make a ton of glass and make a big glass roof over the main entrance to it just for looks.

Those beaches don't last very long when you're making a lot of glass. But it's the time spent smelting it all that's the real issue.

When you have 10 stoves, it doesn't take very long. One night and I'm set. I can deal with one night

Hm, I might just go ahead and buy this before alpha when the price will be higher.

If we where to set up a server that would be cool, I wouldn't mind playing some normal games and just trying to survive in a group, that could be quite cool.

I was setting up a server last night and I have that exact error. Even resynching the time does nothing, nor does making firewall exceptions or messing with my antivirus, I even did the port forwarding perfectly. I think it's just a software bug on Notch's part, to be honest.

Notch updated the server software for Minecraft yesterday, as well as adding a craftable compass that points to your current spawn point, very useful if you built your home near your spawn point.

EDIT: Anyone else make lightposts around your area to keep monsters from spawning so you can work at night? Problem... all of the animals are attracted to it. Dumb animals.
